Ok boys tell me about your Palestra trip. I told you it would rock.

I understand Penn was supposed to play Princeton at the Palestra Saturday night. Were they able to remove the STATE. stench in time?

Official attendance was 7881 but there's something off with that figure. The game was sold out and there certainly weren't 1000 empty seats.
Sounds like a few hundred dignitary seats were handed out, what with all the Assistant Associated Athletic Directors ;)

Shouldn't matter. Attendance is typically tickets distributed. Doesn't matter if they are sold or given away.

I did the 3 1/2 hour drive up to SC for a game. Morning weather was nice in the 40's. Left the game and it was OK until we got to Altoona. Snowed all the way to Blairsville and many trucks were stuck on 22, especially at Chicory Mountain. Added about 3 hours to our trip. Made a really long day. Yes, when students are home, should try to do games at other arenas in the state.
Did that once from Columbus and met up with my brother coming in from Jersey. I got really, really lucky as there was black ice on 322 near Tait's--and a van was in the ditch on its roof. But I'd only been going about 5 mph and avoided the problem. But scary nevertheless.

The thought that there isnt a bad seat in the Palestra is wrong. The upper level sideline corner sections are essentially obstructed view seat. I couldnt see the Iowa bench and about 5 feet of that side of the floor and when the crowd stood I was blocked to a few feet from the lane. Section 201.

This photo that someone else posted in another thread shows one "upper level sideline corner section", or what most people simply refer to as a corner. Now, what is there to obstruct your view?

Do you not see the people standing courtside in your own picture blocking part of the floor? From my seat I wasn't blocked just by the people courtside. It was everyone between me and the iowa bench. Seated it was just a little bit, but when they were standing you couldn't see the near side end of the court.

Seriously? If you were sitting 5 rows directly behind the bench you would no see the entire floor when everyone including you was standing.

Not sure what you are doubting. I said Jay doesn't like to play his ex assistants because he is good friends with them and he doesn't want to coach vs. his close buddies. Fran OHanlon played at Nova, but he never coached with Jay. Jay and Fran are friends but were never on the same staff. He likes all the big 5 coaches, even liked Martelli, he has to face them due to the Big 5 tie. But if he has the choice, he has almost never sked an out of conf game vs. one of his old assistants like Chambers, Dunleavy, etc.
Is this what is best for the game of Basketball?

So people were there to obstruct your view?

Having sat all over the Palestra through the years, there are no obstructed seats ( would imagine the same is true for Rec Hall).
If someone stands in front of you, that happens today everywhere. That is not the building’s fault.
The only issue I ever had with Palestra seating is that you are right on the action, and I mean right on.
For BJC, change the lower level layout to mimic Rec Hall, and shut off the upper level which they already do for some games ( I believe). Make it into an 8,000 seat facility.

As for the Palestra, its fun. The problem is sideline corners are essentially obstructed view seats.

Never were for me, and I sat there many times over many years.
If you can show where posts of any kind block the view, I would love to see them. If it’s people, that’s not the building’s fault.
It is the best!

That's where my seats were (I'm the guy frantically trying to get my phone camera to work in the pic above) and you are correct. I never got to see Chambers pants the entire game (except for timeouts). The seats really sucked

That's why I said in my post "ESSENTIALLY obstructed view seats". My view was obstructed by people. While everyone was sitting I could see from a few feet inside the 3 point arc in front of the Iowa bench. When everyone was standing I could only see a few feet outside of the lane in front of the Iowa bench. The Iowa fans in the upper left corner of your picture actually had better sightlines than we did. I can locate myself in your picture just to the right of them about 6 rows from the top.

Does anyone remember when they had Big 5 Doubleheaders at the Pakestra?

Or am I not remembering it correctly?
Oh on every saturday night. Les Keiter and then Big Al Meltzer, Charlie Swift and even Bill White I believe did some Big 5 games.

Don't think I read a Palestra thread without recalling the city championship in 1970-something with leaping lewis lloyd of the O squaring off with gene banks of West.

Those were days.

I do recall my friend and i were an, um, minority in the crowd... and it never once was an issue. Great game.
Philly high school basketball was the best in the country in the 1970's and 80's. West Philly and Overbook then Dobbins. Franklin, Gratz later on. Just insane high level basketball for one town.

I’d rather drop 10 or 12 sports and plow the money into a new dedicated hoops arena.
