Last year was the first time CJF had sufficient scholarship numbers along the OL. Since we played USC in the Rose Bowl, we lost seven OL (Dowrey, Gaia, Palmer, Laurent, Beh, Bronson and Sorrell). In the February 2017 class, we added three OL (Miranda, Holmes and Martin) making our net loss going into the fall four OL. Next year, we lose Mahon, Nelson and possibly Wright. While Wright has junior eligibility, he attended Milford Academy for a year and turned 22 right before spring practice. I am thinking that 2018 would be his sixth year of football beyond high school? I could be wrong.
Given the above numbers, why wouldn't we take five OL recruits for February 2018? With any future injuries or early NFL draft departures after the 2018 season, we may need another three or four OL recruits for February 2019.
Some will say that Beh, Bronson and Sorrell were never factors. While none of the three ever met expectations for different reasons, there is no guarantee for the success of any recruit. As the sanctions and 2016 injuries proved, you need adequate numbers at every position. We also remember when CJF arrived and OL walk-ons populated the two deep roster.
I am curious as to board member's thoughts since many seem to believe that four OL recruits for the 2018 class is more than adequate.
