Ono to PSU

Betting someone has said it, but, worst case, he'll bank enough catch-and-release TDs (a la MM, Nolf, etc..) in the first and ‘choice’ periods to cover a full period being ridden. And when choice is his for period 2, the TF will happen before period 3 does.
Still pinching myself that this tiger is now a lion.

Micic is perfectly qualified to talk about how hard it is to adjust between the styles.

Personally I’m looking forward to see what happens. When Crookham and Ono meet, how will the match develop? How about when he wrestles Ayala or any number of others? Who knows, but it adds another exciting dimension to the 2026 year.
Didn't say he wasn't. I am saying that folk vs free is not the same distance as Greco vs folk.

Ono 21 Ayala 6
*Ayala +30 seconds RT

I sure am doubtful Ono won’t be able to figure out what I have been teaching 12 year olds to do coaching the last 7 years to
Get off bottom and I’m not Nick Lee or Casey Cunningham either
Yeah, if he’s working with Nick Lee, he’s with the right guy to learn about how to ride. If he’s can get out from under Nick, he’s golden.

It was just a joke. The RT part anyway. I’m sure he’ll be just fine. Got me wondering though, has anyone ever tf’d a an opponent in NCAA D1 wrestling and NOT had an RT advantage?

Your 12-year-olds aren't getting out from the bottom of collegiate wrestlers, but yes, he'll work on this, and it's not exactly rocket science. As I (and others) have posted, he'll get a healthy dose of Nick Lee, Zain Retherford and probably even Beau Bartlett on top and he's going to learn.

I don't know if that is shade really, Micic is a freestyle senior world champ who never won an NCAA title and didn't AA his final season. They are very different sports and the transtition will be hard, but I think Ono is so good in neutral and PSU coaches are good enough that he will get it sorted out by March
Yep. I can’t disagree with anything that micic said there. It will be quite an adjustment for Ono.

I'm thinking Ono is going 133.
Does Davis have a red shirt? I would think Nagao would be alright at 141. He's real good on top but seemed to have a little trouble with the quick/ leg ankle opponent. He's got a decent frame . Now if it's a shoulder injury all bets are off.

Can you imagine Ono learns Bow and Arrow.
Yeah, but as fun as that is for us, top is the last thing he should work on. He can and should cut and release back to his strength.

He should work on folk finishes -- specifically, work with Shayne (and Beau if he stays with NLWC) on converting shots and snaps into near-side cradles. And working with Levi on converting shots into turks (which is where most of this year's bow and arrows came from anyway). And then when he gets his swipes, if he doesn't get the fall, cut and release.

That's the best use of his time.

Agree, 133 makes the most sense for Ono.

Davis still has a shirt.

Nagao probably would be OK at 141, but he needs to be better on feet if he's going to beat out Blaze. His shots need to be to finish, not to create a scramble that he thinks he can finish.

Ono is a lot better in his group than the average 12 yo in theirs also.

To become a champion at Folk, it requires mastery of all three positions, ... or does it?

When you are the greatest P4P neutral wrestler there is right now, who needs a ride out or attempts at turns when catch and release meets you more points. Ono can and should just choose neutral all year long. That's two positions, check.

So then we look at bottom. Ono is pretty damn strong and powerful, not to mention an elite athlete. I think the staff can teach him to get to his base and work hand control to get an escape against all but the best riders. I bet the book against him will be to get double boots in and grind away, and for the first half year he may have a difficult time in this respect. No doubt Zain and Nick will be working on those scenarios often.

As for Blaze? I am so jazzed to see both he and PJ just tear it up out of the gate, but if we can eek redshirts out of one or both, look out!!!!

So the only real question at 141 is if Blaze wants to redshirt. He doesn't need to for sure. Or does Cael want him to redshirt to set up future lineups?

I know you're asking this rhetorically ...

Kyle Snyder answered this question in 2016. The blueprint is in Lorenzo.

We'll see, but I'm expecting Blaze to start out of the gate -- not even the "we'll shirt him in the fall and decide in January."

IMO with the 30-man roster cap, we're gonna see a lot less of true freshmen shirting when they're healthy and capable of starting.

Cael doesn't need to set up future lineups. He's getting enough talent that it'll take care of itself.

If Ono is in the starting lineup, it means he's beating Davis, who just finished 5th in the country, and perhaps Nagao as well. That would be a pretty clear indication that he's adjusting just fine to folkstyle.

Cael wants his wrestlers to be good in all 3 positions. Even guys who were dominant from neutral learned to be efficient mat wrestlers, too.

I suspect Ono will choose down and work on improving next year. He might get ridden in a dual or two, but by the time the NCAAs come around, he'll be ready for whatever.

It's a process.

Is English your first language? Seems like you’re translating for Ono.😊

Crookham and Ayala have never wrestled anyone of this caliber to me knowledge. They wont know what hit them.
