Self-reported NCAA violations prevent Ohio State from recruiting 5-star prospect Micah Parsons

Five-star defensive end Micah Parsons was once a favorite to land at Ohio State — that was until Ohio State agreed to stop recruiting the class of 2018 prospect because of self-reported NCAA violations that occurred during his official visit on Sept. 9.

Ohio State self-reported the violations to the NCAA on Sept. 26. The violations, which The Lantern obtained through a public-records request, were the result of improper contact that happened during the recruit’s visit to the set of ESPN’s College GameDay at The Oval prior to the Buckeyes’ game against Oklahoma.

As a result of the infractions, Ohio State agreed to no longer recruit Parsons and declared him ineligible for an unknown amount of time.

I've read Ohio State fans smearing Parsons for months that he's a "bad kid" and that's why they stopped recruiting him.

Notice OSU never claimed they wouldn't accept a Parsons commitment. Just because they claim they are no longer recruiting him doesn't mean there isn't some back channel contact. A friend of a friend sort of thing.

well that makes waaaayyy more sense than they simply decided they didn't need or want him like OSU fans have been trying to say for months.

wonder how much herbstreit may have been involved. I note the Pitt violation where members of the press are in attendance during recruiting sessions. i don't understand the rules so am not making the claim; asking the question.

The real story ....
OSU stopped recruiting Parsons because of the tweet.
OSU decides, hey we don't want this guy anyway, let's self-report and make our punishment that we agree to not recruit the guy.
LOL

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Five-star defensive end recruit Micah Parsons will not sign with Ohio State on Wednesday.
Why?

In part, it's because of an NCAA violation during Parsons' official visit to Ohio State in September for the Oklahoma game. As part of the penalty for that violation, which Ohio State self-reported to the NCAA, the Buckeyes agreed to stop recruiting Parsons.

The violation and agreement were reported by The Lantern, the Ohio State student newspaper, through public records on NCAA violations obtained by Lantern sports editor Colin Hass-Hill.

The violation occurred, according to Hass-Hill's review of the records, when Parsons entered ESPN's College GameDay set and met and was photographed with ESPN analyst and former OSU quarterback Kirk Herbstreit. Such contact isn't permitted under NCAA recruiting rules. As The Lantern story explains, an OSU recruiting staffer was with Parsons and allowed the contact to happen.

Parsons was once a primary target of the Buckeyes, and though Parsons had seemingly been leaning toward Penn State recently, there were indications that Ohio State remained interested.

A 6-foot-3, 235-pounder from Harrisburg, Penn., Parsons is ranked as the No. 4 overall player in the Class of 2018 by 247sports.com. He will announce his commitment on Wednesday, which is the new early signing period for college football. He is expected to sign with Penn State.

So, a bagman can drop $1million dollars at your dad's church or you can take all the fake classes you want...but you better not meet any media and take a few pics. Just pointing out the stupidity here not sticking up for OSU...smh

They know the rules. They broke them.

""As such, a violation of NCAA Bylaws 13.10.1 and 13.10.2.4 occurred, as members of the media may not be present during an institution's recruiting contact with a prospect and a prospect may not participate in team activities that would make the public or media aware of the prospect's visit to the institution," Ohio State's self-violation report said.""
According to the records, Terwilliger allowed the recruit and his parents to enter College GameDay's production area in front of the set, which is inaccessible to the public. The group was then given credentials by a producer of the show. The action is regarded as an improper benefit by the NCAA, and was self-reported by Ohio State."

Yikes. I assume that member of the recruiting staff who let that happen has been "reassigned." And Herbie might want to start looking for a new house a little farther south or out west...Nashville will be way too close for some Buckeye fans to tolerate!!

This is gross to read....I've seen OSU fans dog on the kid for months about his character yet never seen anything like this alluded to. Very curious about the details on this as I can't recall anything like it in the past. I now wonder how often this happens where the coaches just pretend they don't want a kid anymore to avoid the culpability and embarrassment.
I suppose it's also plausible that Micah did something like taking an improptu trip to the free tattoo store.

I wonder, in my cynical mind, if they are letting this story out there to show guys like Smith and Oweh that Parsons would be heading to Ohio State if not for this little mishap.

More likely a misdirection play to take the focus off losing Parsons, Oweh, Jones, and Woodbey and a less than expected 2018 season.

I like how OSU is getting credit for "self-reporting" when the Worldwide Leader put it out there for everyone to see.

So what if Parsons called Urbs and says he wants to be a Buckeye? I get tOSU is no longer recruiting him, but did they pull the 'ship offer?

Crystal Balls are 96% PSU 4% OU right now.

Not saying that at all...just pointing out that the NCAA is full of crap. They will pound on these things but will do NOTHING when real violations occur that would hurt their financial bottom line

He would still be ineligible for a period of time.

This is pile of horsecrap.Slap on the wrist violation under ordinary circumstance. Agree to next year cutback coaches being on the road for a few days and/or reduce the number of official visits by one or two.

Gotta give the Buckeyes credit for creativity.

This may backfire on Bucks if they made this up as an excuse. Parsons definitely knows enough recruits this year and next to tell them that Ohio State is a bunch of lying SOBs and this what they do when they are going to miss out on someone. Some recruits may not feel they can trust them. Probably wishful thinking on my part.

If OSU stopped recruiting Parsons, what can he say? I think they're smart enough to make sure that loose end was tied up.

It's odd, but it seems like they seriously have a PR team for anything like this the last couple of years. Now there is more to this one for sure and there was smoke way before this that they had some doubts, buy why today? Who in the hell would print and publish this trash? The staff cannot comment on it so it's like they know that and half deny it later on. Forget Parsons, it's any kid that doesn't choose them and no matter the school there is some back story to it.

Who knows, but it does reek of damage control.

Didn't they also have to report on Terrelle Pryor's OV? Something to do with an improper benefit on a hotel?
