My wife watched it, then had the 2 older kids (pre-teens) watch and I finally got around to it last night. Good stuff that I think most of us are aware of it to a certain extent, but I recommend it for those with pre-teen kids and on up. It also kind of shows how the conspiracy theory driven people are manipulated....which again...I think most sane people are aware of.

They addressed the paranoid people who swear that their phone conversations are being monitored as reflected by the advertisements that are directed their way. Ironically, I was having a convo yesterday with someone about converting retail space into a virtual reality shopping experience, and less than an hour later the following ad was targeted at me on twitter:

I can see why people might be paranoid! 😄

Even more so are those that are on twiiter 24x7 and consider it a news source. Basically the people they were talking about who are addicted to it and cannot stop using it. They are certainly the most prone to being manipulated.

Getting “news” from Facebook is such a scourge. It’s such an echo chamber since people mute people whose opinion they didn’t agree with, and Facebook feeds you junk that you agree with, and makes it more and more radical. Luckily it’s mostly old folks since young people don’t use it any longer since it’s all boomers.

I did. Thought it was okay. 6 out of 10. There’s no doubt we have lost an entire generation of young people to “devices”.

Sure. Just as it is with any other tool, the utility of Twitter depends on the end-user's consumption. Take bricks and hammers, for example. Most people would use them to build homes and businesses. Others, however, may use them as weapons to attack the police and destroy businesses. Rather than bail out the perps and blame Twitter for the riots and looting, I say follow the law and prosecute the individuals who committed the crimes.

There is no better platform for the immediate dissemination of unfiltered information. With that comes abuse in the form of disinformation, but the same is true for our traditional media outlets that lean left or right and sometimes take payments to promote certain agendas (ie, "fake news").

Is there room for improvement? Sure. I wouldn't be against some kind of standardized fact check for controversial tweets, but then you have to fact-check the fact checkers. Luckily, with Twitter, all you have to do is scroll down through about 10 responses to see the opposing point of view.

True. The echo chamber seems to make people more binary, like every issue has to be perceived through the lens of good vs evil, right vs wrong, conservative vs liberal, etc. Seems to drive moderates into identity politics which further erodes the middle ground.

We also lost older generations to disinformation. They literally only listen to what they want to hear...and that is online and on air as it was pointed out.

Yes but part of that is just human nature. We all tend to believe things we agree with. Especially politics.

Yep.

I've said/posted, "If you think if only everyone would wear a mask, things could be almost like normal again, and that's why the US isn't doing as well as Europe supposedly is doing.... OR that masks are worthless (because the WHO said so) and are just some plot for the government to control us... If you're in either of those camps, you REALLY should watch The Social Dilemma.

I think it is much deeper and far more insidious than just fake news and polarizing politics. In the social dilemma, I was struck by the number of Silicon Valley employees/execs that prevent their children from using the internet/social media. It says a lot.

no doubt. One only has to look at any 2a article or “trump did another stupid thing” On the centre daily times Facebook. 100 comments an Hour after it’s posted. All from people who have locations other than PA. Meanwhile a post about 2hour delays on atherton gets 4 comments.

Regarding the "news"-people don't really look for so called "straight news" anymore. IMO they choose the news that conforms to their world/societal views. Like comfort food, there's comfort news. If you believe that the President is a Russian agent and wants everyone to die of COVID, you go to MSNBC to make yourself feel better. Same as if you believe he's the greatest President of all-time, can do nothing wrong, etc. you go to Fox News. Twitter is the biggest echo chamber of all. I think someday, we’ll look back and say social media ended up being far more harmful then helpful.

This concept has been brought to the forefront over the last few weeks with Twitter and Facebook and other media platforms choosing to censor the dissemination of information that is damaging to certain political interests.

The question is, what role -- if any -- should the US Government play in the oversight and regulation of such enterprise? Can this be addressed through the private sector?

And the answer to the question is simple. These are not information platforms but are instead regulators of information, and should thus be held liable for the damage they cause. The private sector is always subject to such liabilities, yet companies like Facebook and Twitter operate with impunity from lawsuits. Lift that and they cannot behave like this.

If the Left wins the election, this problem will only get worse. It will cement the downfall of the republic. The Left is not going to bring their own people down.

This communist revolution will not be through guns, as we've seen throughout history. It will be through information and brainwashing, without firing a shot.

Whether you vote right or left, I think we can all agree that it's weird that twitter won't allow people to post video clips of Joe Biden promising to put an end to fracking. It makes regular people like me think something funny's going on behind the scenes.

Something's up. And we're the pawns.

That’s because “journalism” has destroyed itself and the older generation doesn’t believe much of what they hear anymore. The younger generation swallows everything hook, line and sinker, but the older generation that remembers when news was somewhat neutral has given up believing anything except what they agree with.

If you like those type films, look up “the business of poverty”. I think it was on amazon prime. It’s very enlightening
