no spoilers in first film.

Fiancee and I went to see this film at a matinee showing. Thank God. If I had seen that film outside daylight hours, I would have been devastated. One of the most brilliant horror films I've ever seen. We both left the theater in tears.

without revealing any of the plot, I will just say this is not a cheap "jump scare" horror film. There is a sustained 2 hours of spiraling dread and a descent into mental hell. For once, the trailers do not reveal the tone of the film, nor crucial plot twists.

If I had to sum up the film in one word, it would be "disturbing". and not a "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" level of disturbing, but a very real and relatable sense of dread.

I am a huge horror freak. I went with 2 others from work. We were all very disappointed. There was only 1 other person in the theatre so we were able to talk throughout and we kept joking about time and let's get to it.

I do agree it had potential and it was refreshing to not have black cats or other shock effects. But it was just ho hum to us. And that ending was preposterous.

It reminded me of The Witch from last year.

But I do suggest seeing it if you are interested. Obviously Critics loved it on Rotten. Audience love or hate.

Saw it a few weeks ago and it left me flat. Particularly disappointed in the way they wrapped the film up. It had potential to be creepier but, to me, the ending ruined it.

I think part of the weirdness of the ending is that the movie lays down the possibility the mom is just crazy, and we have an unreliable narrator, and none of the supernatural stuff is real.

as the last 15 minutes unfolds, I felt very disoriented and creeped out. like holy crap, the mom IS crazy, AND all this sh*t is real.

True.

Saw it a few weeks back. Best horror film since....well, I don't want to give it away.

I heard really good things about the movie and since I don’t watch many horror films (last one was probably...Let The Right One In) and I was curious about the ending, which seemed to be getting the most attention, I read the plot details. Now I want to see it.

here's an interesting thought . . . my fiancee and I went to see Othello last night as a Shakespeare in the Park performance. She said, this play more than any other has a lot of universal and human themes/dialogue

there are a lot of horrific scenes in this film. yet the authenticity of the family drama hits deeper.

You know, if you feel need to see stuff like this, realize there’s plenty of real life examples all around us.

Do you mean an Exorcist type disturbing?

uhm yeah there are some very graphic and disturbing things in the film

but the honest, emotional outbursts from some of the characters really hit on a deeper level

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of gore, but that's not exclusive to horror movies. For me, it's all about tone and atmosphere. That's what is scary. That, and the particular subject matter in Hereditary is one that can be particularly frightening (in the same way The Exorcist is....).

One of the scariest scenes I've seen on film is from Mullholand Drive, and it happens in broad daylight. It's pure Lynch, but actor Patrick Fischler sells the sh*t out of it.

Did you 'get' the ending when you saw it? Or did you have to do some research? I hear the film isn't very heavy handed with it's explanation....
