So we moved to a new house about 2 years ago and got rid of the big yard. Our current home has about 1/3 of an acre....so I no longer have my riding mower....just a self propelled Toro with Briggs & Stratton engine. I am sick of having to tinker with it and repair every couple of months.

Does anyone have any experience with the Ryobi electric mower or the Ego? A neighbor said I could try out his Ego electric but I wanted to see if anyone else had any feedback for use of electric mower on small, flat yard.

I like the idea of no longer having to full with gas and oil etc.

Thanks in advance.

If you get the Ryobi, get the big self propelled one. Smaller Ryobi good for small yards only, and is not SP. Batteries on smaller do not last as advertised.

any recommendations then?
Buy anything with a Honda engine. The brand of the mower is not as important as the brand of the engine. I've had a cheap Troy Built mower with a Honda engine for 10 years now. It still starts up on the first pull and never has given me any real concerns. The choke sticks on it, but I think the new ones are choke-free. Still, all I have to do is push it and the choke goes right down.

Pal of mine recently heard my rants about B+S and found a Kohler-powered LawnBoy (which is now little more than a Toro with green paint)... it's not hard to find Honda-powered machines, a few years ago I saw even Craftsman had a reasonably-priced model with a Honda engine... when John Deere made great pushmowers (eg: JD model 14SB) you'd get a Kawasaki (sweet!).... I bought one at an estate sale about 15yrs ago for my mom... were I shopping I'd look for a 14SB on Craigslist...

My favorite is a classic 2-stroke LawnBoy with a cast-aluminum deck... used my 1996 model on Fri to do some trim work... primer bulb dry-rotted so i pulled the bulb off and used my LawnJarts ring like a 4' straw to suck-n-blow fuel to the carb... sunnuvabitch fired right up!

Long run, the battery mowers will cost you more. Check the warranty as that is when you can reasonably expect the battery to quit. Make sure you know the cost to replace and weigh that out in determining what is best value. Also, make sure you know how long the battery will run to make sure you can finish your lawn cut.

The two battery-powered units I owned simply blew-donkeys when it came to mowing... my wife was tired of my cancer-belching 2cycle LawnBoy and thought battery power was the answer... was like pushing a couple cinder-blocks around though I'm confident the cinder blocks would do a better job

My old LawnBoy with its little blue-smoke-maker... it's been a love affair... i love tossing her around the yard

Purchased a Honda HRX217VYA for us in the spring - 190 cc with twin blades. It's a peach. Loved the John Deere, but there is no comparison. The Honda hands down.

If your pushmower had anything other than a Briggs & Stratton there'd be less tinkering... I avoid B+S like I avoid a dentist holding a French tickler...

I have two battery-powered pushmowers in my past and both are now in Lake Ontario

Great posts! Keep 'em comin!

Buy a honda self propelled at Home Depot. My wife has done the mowing of our yard for years and has never had a problem starting it, we have a little over a third of an acre.

I also have a Honda self propelled and love it. I also love my wife but she would probably have an easier time deciphering Swahili than figuring out how to start it and cut the lawn...

Just get after it like our Amish brothers...

Hot take....

Anyone who needs to buy a self-propelled lawnmower is pathetic. How heavy is a lawnmower to push around? Your legs must look like sticks.

I agree... Craigslist is littered with little mowers with broken drive-mechanisms... they ALL end up being really heavy pushmowers... avoid self-propelled and get a nice light cast-aluminum deck pushmower with a good engine... i laughed when my friend told me he bought a Lawn Boy (Toro) and boasted it had all-wheel-drive... i told him maybe for a season or two :)

Yep. Pushed the John Deere around for the last 7 years without a drive belt. It broke twice a year. I got a good workout with it. Heavy mower. What a beast. I ran over anything that was in my way that wasn't big enough to bend the crankshaft.

Honda HR series. I have abused mine for 10+ years and it refuses to stop mowing. I would be very hesitant about mowing a 1/3rd acre with a battery model.

You probably don't need anything fancier than a 21" self-propelled model. Electric-stArt will be at your discretion.

Our neighbor convinced me to buy the Honda. Not disappointed.

When we had the young kids, when I got home from work she would say, you watch the kids, she would put on a sony Walkman and mow the yard. She said it was a great break....

Don't understand the hate in here for the self-propelled option. Purchased a toro version from HD going on 6 years ago due to a steep hill on our smaller yard and it was a back saver. Plus, now that we have a large yard, which has necessitated a riding mower, the self-propelled helps get the yard done in under a half day.

You want to look down on self propelled, you best be using a scythe or a push reel tough guy.

Half a DAY?!?!? Are you PUSHING the riding mower and riding the self-propelled?

I've had a GreenWorks electric (corded) mower for several years. No gas, no mixtures, no battery issues. Perfectly reliable, plenty of power. Just establish a pattern and mow from the nearest point to the furthest.

If it's a reel mower of course it looks good...Only reel mowers actually cut the grass...rotary mowers are weed whips and if blades aren't kept sharpened, they rip the grass leaving uneven ends that will look crappy over time... but they are most definitely a physical workout!

Get a Honda - for the past 5 years I've been trying to find a reason to get rid of it and buy a new one, but it still runs great .... 17 years and going strong.

I've had the same model for 11 years and it still runs like a champ. This model is top of the line, with a plastic deck and electric start, but you'd do well with the $500 Hondas they sell at Home Depot too.

Years ago, my dad told my uncle, "get the push mower, you need the exercise". A year later my dad bought a self propelled.

I've got a Honda push. The problem with mowers is the more crap you put on them the more they break. I've had self propelled but it needed to be in the shop as much as a car (once a year tune up, at least, to make sure the self propelled parts work). I got a cheap Honda. It starts every time, mows great, and I get my exercise. When it breaks, I'll replace it with another (God willing)
