I don't think he is related to the shoe company, however he may well be related to the underwear company. Not knocking PA, it does have some nice scenery.
But check out the Pacific NW sometime. It’s like central PA on steroids!
BTW, do you know if the family that owns that shoe house nearby is any relation to Levi Haines?
I'm assuming all this talk about Wilkes-Barre is because of Wyoming Seminary.
Sem is located across the river from Wilkes-Barre in Kingston which is actually a pretty nice area.
Shamokin spent over a decade under state receivership, just rescinded in August. In 2021, the town's residents voted against home rule.
Having been there quite a few times in the last 3 years, I don't know the financials but have seen and talked with folks about the conditions there. I find it hard to believe that the Borough of Shamokin is in stable financial shape. More likely it got some cash infusion from either Harrisburg or Washington, that masked its problems for a while. Plus a lot of residents are on some form of public assistance.
WNEP has a talent for finding the most (cough cough) entertaining residents of a community. But for Shamokin, they didn't have to work very hard.
Wilkes Barre and Luzerne/Lackawanna have GREAT pizzaNot comparing Oklahoma to the Pennsylvania countryside. I'm from Biglerville. I grew up in the prettiest countryside ever. You don't have to tell me rural Pennsylvania is the best
I'm specifically responding to someone who said Wilkes-Barre is like Vegas compared to Oklahoma. Wilkes-Barre is a DUMP!! 😂
Like c'mon guys, you're going to live in McKeesport or downtown Reading rather than Oklahoma? Yeah sure...😂
And having been to both, just in terms of the aesthetics of the land, rural Oklahoma is way the hell less boring than Indiana or most of Ohio. The area around Stillwater is pretty, rolling country and not just CORN
Just import some eyetalians to Oklahoma and they'll figure the pizza s*** outWilkes Barre and Luzerne/Lackawanna have GREAT pizza
There are lots in Oklahoma in Witness Protection.Just import some eyetalians to Oklahoma and they'll figure the pizza s*** out
Didn't they try that with the Ferraris?Just import some eyetalians to Oklahoma and they'll figure the pizza s*** out
A lot of beautiful homes along the river.Kingston used to be where the old money was. As you go along Wyoming Avenue (Route 11) , there's a lot of mini-mansions.

Keep in mind Iowans have trouble counting to 12
Iowa biggest city is DSM and they've a few issues but nothing like that shit hole called Philly. Iowa is like living in the 80s. Love visiting the people are so friendly and the kids still hold the door for you. People are definitely raised differently in IowaI do have to disagree. I have relatives in Iowa.
On their worse day, they are smarter, nicer and more productive than some of the trash from Philadelphia. Especially the trash that comes to Harrisburg to do things like enact gas taxes to pay for SEPTA busses and trains and obtain permission to charge extra sales taxes to support the graft and grift.
My antipathy is limited to twin psycho-squirrels that have run and ruined the Iowa program.
Iowa doesn't have this kind of stuff. (yet). I'm shocked Philly is still standing after Sunday night.
That's exactly why I live in Maine!!I do have to disagree. I have relatives in Iowa.

The gas tax does support SEPTA (public transportation) - in addition to the PA State Police, bridge and road maintenance all across the state. I'm not sure how any of those qualify as non-productive.I do have to disagree. I have relatives in Iowa.

From the tone of your post, I expect you don't think that graft and grift occur outside "big" cities, despite basically centuries of evidence (actually all of recorded human history) that small, rural towns are the place it thrives the most because of lack of oversight.
There's many reasons that Shamokin is the place that it is and none of them have to do with Philadelphia.

Shamokin has nothing to do with my post, but feel free to wander like sheep.
And from the tone of your post, I expect that you think it is productive when people fueling up in Coudersport get to pay extra so the folks riding SEPTA pay less. How about we have a tax on SEPTA rides that pays for roads and bridges in Potter County? When I'm forced to pay for somebody else's busses and trains that's the very soul of corruption.
Apparently you think the overseers are incorrupt. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
I grew up in Luzerne County, so I know more about grift and graft than you can imagine. We were all reminded of it when Biden commuted the sentence of "cash for kids" judge Michael Conahan on the way out. Sucks to be partner in crime Mark Ciavarella, huh?
But in Philly, it's at scale.

Why at least 39 Philly politicians got investigated over the last 15 years
In Philadelphia politics, it seems like some elected official is always being investigated, indicted, charged or convicted.billypenn.com

"Oversight". You have any other magic fairy dust you believe in?
My uncle was a lead investigator for one of PA's state law enforcement agencies. At a family gathering I made a comment about Clearfield County being so corrupt it made Hazzard county of "The Dukes of Hazzard" fame look down right squeaky clean. Johnstown's nice this time of year. Winter is really the only time I go down town. Ya don't have all the foot traffic from the halfway houses, Section 8 housing, and meth clinics like you get in the summer time.

being from Clearfield (but not living there for 40 years) this is interesting. Anything to add - examples? Use to keep local cops on call to go pick up county judge (since dead) every time he got pulled over drinking and driving, multiple times a week. From the bench he of course was the hardest ass in the state at throwing the book (with a lecture) at anybody before him for the same offense.being from Clearfield (but not living there for 40 years) this is interesting. yea, I wouldn't think this is that unusual... my dad was a cop in the '60s when he got out of the service. Never got many stories but heard a few (officers taking advantage of things - shooting rabbits, etc.Use to keep local cops on call to go pick up county judge (since dead) every time he got pulled over drinking and driving, multiple times a week. A clearfield county drug bust generally means 48 people arrested with 3 marijuana cigarettes between them, a gram of coke with 178 dollars. Yet many folks who make a very good living managing drug sales are never bothered.
Just a couple examples.
Shot a possum from my porch in a centre county borough. Borough chief of police was my neighbor. Came over and yelled at me (us) about discharging a fire arm in the borough. I invited him to stay for a beer, he yelled over his shoulder i can't i have to go call your dad and tell him he raised an asshole.yea, I wouldn't think this is that unusual... my dad was a cop in the '60s when he got out of the service. hey pitch you don't think there is grift in every state you better think again?

Judge John Reilly was a horrible man. He went to Penn State and Dickinson School of Law to add insult to injury. He would definitely drive drunk seven days a week and throw the book at anyone for anything. We have another shady judge that’s done after this year. Thank the lord are DA is probably going to win his seat, he’s a honest good guy.Use to keep local cops on call to go pick up county judge (since dead) every time he got pulled over drinking and driving, multiple times a week. ha. makes me chuckle to myself how everyone thinks Walter Cronkite and those days of newscast was 'truthful'. Based on this, and reading The Progress' - they may have been truthful but but the truth was what they were told. Don't ever recall reading anything about said corruption. Critical thinking - never to old to do!Judge John Reilly was a horrible man. He went to Penn State and Dickinson School of Law to add insult to injury. I'm a Berks County kid, you can say it. There are no wrestling powerhouse schools in Berks, except maybe Berks Catholic. Maybe, and that's several tiers below the Sem/McCort/Becca level private schools. No shade to Exeter High but a great wrestling high school? No so sure about that Bo. The comparison to Apple Valley was a bit much. And the prediction of big points from ADS? Ended with zero.
I think you are the third berks county rep that I know of on this board then . I am Conrad Weiser alumI'm a Berks County kid, you can say it. No idea , they probably graduated 20 years after I did. I only followed them through my mom keeping me up to date . Pretty sure they were the most successful from CW , after they went to university of NC not sure what happenedWhatever happened to the Sola brothers?
There's been a nice Wyo to PSU football pipeline the last few years. I graduated from Governor Mifflin.I went to Wyomissing.

They were never known for their wrestling program (sorry Jan Johnson) but I think they were one of the first in the area to start a girls team. Sounds like the girls youth program is pretty healthy. My 6 year old granddaughter wrestled in the GM system this winter.
Hopefully J'ven Williams will get some playing time next year. My son and I went to the PIAA semis a couple years ago where they throttled Neuman Goretti because it was played close to us in Bucks. We estimated that about 1/4 of the boys in the high school were dressed for the football team, which is astonishing (especially since they usually have a good soccer team and cross country as well). My brother is in the WFA Hall of Fame. He was All-Berks on the first Wyo team that won districts in 1990. I quit football after 9th grade. Wrestling interfered with football because I was too small to play in the line in high school and too slow to play anywhere else. There's been a nice Wyo to PSU football pipeline the last few years.
