OT: Name an older movie that, once you find on TV, must watch all the way through

Ones that have not been mentioned

Blazing Saddles
Patton
The Battle of the Bulge
(mostly because it had a big impact on me as a kid, even tho it is historically inaccurate)

Note that Casablanca has a *huge* PSU influence as it was written by the Epstein brothers, who were both PSU grads (and PSU athletes--in boxing). Julius was the NCAA bantamweight champ and was buried in a PSU shirt. Philip, his twin, also was a boxer for PSU and his grandson Theo is GM of the Cubbies.

Mrs KG loves Die Hard, Speed, and Executive Decision.

Oh, and Groundhog Day
and Groundhog Day
and Groundhog Day
and Groundhog Day
and Groundhog Day
and Groundhog Day
and Groundhog Day
and Groundhog Day
and Groundhog Day
and Groundhog Day

Can't believe I forgot this - anyone mention Tombstone?

In addition to those already mentioned:
Princess Bride
Saving Private Ryan
Blues Brothers
Cabaret
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Gettysburg

All great suggestions. I'll add Excalibur and Cast Away.

I just love the british theater-like vocal stylings and, of course, the timeless story of King Arthur (love, betrayal, redemption).

I saw a version of castaway where one of the producers walks you through the scenes and it is fascinating. There are so many hidden messages in the movie its unreal. One thing struck me...they found this island and filmed the first half of the movie. They broke for six months (IIRC) and came back after Hanks changed his body to reflect someone in that position. But the insurance company wouldn't insure the movie because they were afraid a storm might wash the island away. Only after convincing the insurance company that this was minimal and paying a hefty premium did they move forward with the movie. So it took a year to film, in two parts, flabby Hanks and buff Hanks. BTW, Hanks got a serious infection. Also, they went back and filmed Hanks' rant to his buddy after he saw his ex-GF. The original had him seeing her and then driving off knowing he had let life move past him in his pursuit of being on time (Fed Ex). The next scene was him seeing the artist and returning the package. He finishes with saying "thank you" which is a message that the package and the ordeal, had saved his life (in terms of meaning). Anyway, in testing people didn't get it, so they had him come back and wrote in his summary speech before they released it. Just such a unique movie and so well done. They laugh that the script was 1/4 of an inch thick. It was all visualization by the writers, producers, director and Hanks.
35 years later and Excalibur still hasn't been outdone. I don't think it can be. Boorman just nailed it.

I want to add "A Man For All Seasons" which is the story of Thomas More standing up to King Henry VIII and paying for it with his life. This 1966 film won 6 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Paul Scofield who is absolutely brilliant as Thomas More. This movie always inspires me and should be required viewing for anyone in public life. Here is a very brief clip of More giving the Devil "benefit of the law".

perhaps a thread on movies you'd like to see again but they are never on (netflix!!!). One I can think of is a mini-series named "Masada" which was outstanding (Peter O'Toole was awsome).

HBO is presently showing The Godfather movies. I am doing with far less sleep. I just can't turn these movies off. Don't know what it is about them. At least I'm sleeping in a bed, and not with the fishes.
Where Eagles Dare. The Searchers. Bridge on the River Kwai.

The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep. The dialogue in those movies and Bogart's delivery was just out of this world good.

I was watching The Dirty Dozen last night. Great movie. Lee Marvin tells Clint Walker if he does what they say maybe they won't hang him. Walker says, "Fixing to kill me some other way." Love that line.
