OT: Name an older movie that, once you find on TV, must watch all the way through

For me it's, "The Hunt for Red October". I consider this one of the finest book-to-movie translations.

Baldwin really f-ed up not continuing as Jack Ryan

"I would have loved to have seen Montana".
Grapes of Wrath
Psycho
Pappion (spelling?)
Smokey and the Bandit (what can I say? I think Jackie Gleason is hysterical in this movie)

For me, hands down no. 1. is Casablanca. The entire movies is a "movie quoter's" dream, its just brilliant.
after that its The Wizard of Oz, Jaws and probably Shawshank (but thats been on so many times even I pass on it.)
Of course Casablanca the screenplay was written by Penn Staters

Have to admit that I love Caddyshack, Animal House and Dumb and Dumber in no small part because my wife LOATHES them. Love her, but when she throws shade at me for watching this kind of movie ,I enjoy asking her if she wants to hear "the most annoying sound in the world." Makes up in part for all of the chick flicks I've had to take in when we hit the movie theater..

As noted above...
Note that Casablanca has a *huge* PSU influence as it was written by the Epstein brothers, who were both PSU grads (and PSU athletes--in boxing). Julius was the NCAA bantamweight champ and was buried in a PSU shirt. Philip, his twin, also was a boxer for PSU and his grandson Theo is GM of the Cubbies.

Saving Pvt. Ryan or from the crypt Attack of the Killer Tomatoes or The Blob (Steve McQueen's first starring role).

The Loved One.
The Out of Towners (the original with Jack Lemon)
A Clockwork Orange
2001 A Space Odyssey
Anything directed by Terry Gilliam

Cool Hand Luke

Modern classics:
Apocalypse Now
The Shining
A Clockwork Orange
1984
Untouchables
Unforgiven

I can't tell you how many times I've seen Jaws -- just not from the beginning. If I discover it's on, it's like a magnet, no matter how far into the movie it is. And I own the DVD, it's not like I can't watch the whole thing any time I want.

Same way with Psycho. And most of Hitchcock's movies.

The Third Man is another one, as is Touch of Evil. And in a completely different direction, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

Christmas movies: It's a Wonderful Life, Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, Miracle on 34th Street (original), Polar Express.

More contemporary movies would be The Green Mile, Twister, any of the Bourne movies (although I always have to figure out which one I'm watching), the last Godzilla remake.

Or, just about any 50's sci fi movie, both the good ones, and the bad ones.

Wild Bunch, The Get Away, Dillinger, Untouchables, Gunfight at the OK Corral, Tom Horn, Monte Walsh, and the one where Charlton Heston gets rousted by Pleasance and his idiot mountain family.

Godfather (1 more so than 2)
Castaway
a guilty pleasure -- The American President, with Michael Douglas and Annete Bening; sentimental and not my politics, but hooks me every time.

The Great Escape
Bullit
Rio Grande

I just watched a triple feature of Rear Window, The Birds, and Vertigo. I must say I always watch Rear Window. All of the usual suspects have been mentioned a lot. Not that I watch it, but it is amazing how often Taken is shown. Seems it is on every time I turn the TV on. Dirty Harry, Cuckoos Nest, are a couple others that I will spend some time with as well.

Not a movie but I always watch the infomercials on those roasts from the 60's and 70's and Carson Tonight shows.
