OK I'm sitting here reading through the various threads/posts and I get a call from a termite extermination company of which we have never been a customer. My wife put us on the National Do Not Call List years ago and periodically checks to make sure we are still registered. So is this list worthless? If not, is there some way to report these firms to do not honor the list, or is this simply a waste of time?

It seemed to work for awhile after it launched. But from what I read, the telemarketers found loopholes and can now operate at will.

I re-upped for the do-not-call list. Then on Christmas Eve I write my list to Santa and burn it in the fireplace. Then the ashes float up to the North Pole where Santa Claus is able to magically put my letter back together and bring my requests to me.

I find one action is equal in effectiveness to the other.

Actually, there is NO government. It is ALL run by "Big Business and the Royal families". BUT, you always have shot at being a "Royal". BUY THOSE LOTTERY TICKETS !!!!!!

Thank goodness for Caller ID. Unless I recognize the incoming number, I never answer.

Sound advice. I rarely get any calls except some bogus collection agency looking for a guy they were told never lived here. Can't remember his first name but his last name (LOL) was Franklin. I don't answer calls anymore unless I recognize the number.

What and miss out on those calls from the IRS. Those dummies use a phone number that actually connects with someone. I love to call them back and just listen to "Hello, hello, is anyone there" in a foreign accent and not say a word. I would use speed dial to call again and again until they finally blocked my number, but I no longer get any calls from them. My 88 year old mother called me hysterical one day because she answered the call and was threatened with jail time unless she immediately settled with the IRS. Of course they only accepted credit cards.

I also blame the phone companies that knowingly allow calls from outside the country to be rerouted through continental U.S. numbers.

Anyone else get calls from Indian accented person saying they're from Microsoft/Windows support or something similar telling you they found bugs in your computer? I've tried all different things including just hanging up, threatening legal action, etc. For a while I would say: I don't have a computer. That would always stop them in their tracks and they'd hang up. I've also tried saying hold on a second and just put the phone down. What do you think is best. No matter what I try they keep calling. The reason I pick up is I'd really like to give it to them somehow.

I hang up when I realize it's a telemarketer but I always talk to those guys from Nigeria. I hear they're legit.

It is the same persons who call for the IRS. They are moonlighting to make ends meet because of India's low minimum wage.

I'll have to keep that in mind the next time a get an e-mail telling me I have "insert word" millions f U.S. dollars. BTW, I know you post was TIC.

If I am sitting around with nothing else to do I let them go through their whole spiel, up to where I am supposed to press a couple of keys to make my computer run OK. After I have engaged them as much as possible I either say "Not interested, but thanks for calling" or I just hang up.
This wastes their time with nothing to show for it. The boss person in these phone bank places gets upset with wasted time and no sale.
Good advice about not answering unless you recognize the name or number.

Just my opinion.

ditto, in fact my voice message says "I do not answer incoming calls if I do not recognize your name. If this call is important, leave a message with your phone number; otherwise, have a nice day".

One company kept calling every day even after telling them three times to put me on their do not call list. If I didn't answer they would leave a long recorded message on my voicemail. Finally I had enough. Before even saying hello, first thing I said was "I am required by Pa state law to tell you that you all calls to this number are recorded." Then I asked name of rep, name of company, and company location. Then said "I have told you three times to take me off your call list. If I get one more call from your company, I will send all recordings to the state attorney general office and to the state PUC"

They don't call any more.

At one point, I hit call trace over a period of days and reported the harassment to the agency handling the Do Not Call program. A few weeks later, I received a thank you form them but with regrets that they do not follow up and chase down the offenders. GEEEEZZZZZZ .... Another governmental waste of time and tax money

I had seventeen calls from them so far in July! In one instance, I asked if they would like to suck my %^$&*. In another I sat there silently and listened with some satisfaction to the foreign sounding individual repeating Hello numerous times. Many time I simply picked the phone up and immediately put it down. And they continued to call, sigh ...

Go to the DNCL website. File a complaint against the company that called.

For those saying thank goodness for caller ID.....you still have a home phone? Good god!

And why not have a home phone? Of course I have a cell, but when I have an important matter to discuss with anyone I use a land line and I am never disappointed with it's clarity. I am handling an estate at present for a very wealthy client and he has specifically asked that I always call his land line with mine. Certainly if I could only afford one, it would be a cell, but if that's not an issue, why not have a land line home phone?

My wife tells me I need to ask them if they use Windex or just soap and water....

Also useful for 911. They can only track your cell to the nearest tower.

If a home phone is necessary for business, fine. Otherwise, you're just throwing money away. We got rid of ours years ago, and I have a 3 line system.

Yeah, but I use the home phone mostly just to call my cell phone to find the damn thing when I misplace it. Us old fogies have bad memories. ;)

Easy to run it down, but consider how much worse things might be without it.
