OT: OK NJ shore experts....need a recommendation...

Want to plan a 3 day getaway with someone special on the Jersey shore.

Looking for a resort type hotel, beachfront, no/few kids, luxury amenities.

Have looked onlne but everything seems really hit or miss. If anyone has first hand experience with a place, I'm all ears (or eyeballs).

Even though I've lived in SEPA for almost 30 years I've always gone south for beach vacations. Never really spent any time 'down the shore.

And it has to be the Jersey shore. Not Delaware, not Virginia....Jersey.

We have a place on Long Beach Island. There are some old Victorian type B&Bs in Beach Haven but I doubt very much that they have the amenities you wish. I think the posters who have mentioned Cape May and Avalon are closer to your requirements. Good luck!

Is that place still open? I worked there 30 years ago in the summer and lived in the dorms. Fun times, especially sneaking into to the girls dorm via the fire escape to visit the GF.

Growing up, I spent all my summers in Cape May. I haven't been there in 3 years. It's nice but I'd agree sort of boring compared to other spots. If you're not looking it hit bars at night OC and Cape May are good spots, but more kids in OC.
The Flanders was renovated and is very nice now. I believe some of the units are condo owned but you can rent them. I attended a wedding there a few years back and it was a very classy affair. It’s around 12th st right on the boardwalk, so it’s a very central location.

Thanks for all of the responses. I’ve checked out several of the mentioned places. Some really good suggestions.

Let me qualify things a bit..

Jersey is a must because she lives in north/central NJ and we are trying to make things very efficient. Don’t want to spend a lot of time in the car. She wants to be close to home in case of an emergency and she needs to get to her kids.

The room and amenities are important. We’ll spend much of our time there . Which, in turn, is why ocean front is desirable. Easy/quick access from room to beach. Would like to sit on a deck and look at and hear the ocean.

BnB’s are nice and we’ve stayed in a few, but we’ve never made it down for breakfast in the morning. Actually kind of pissed off one inn keeper who prepared a nice breakfast for us during a stay but other things took precedence.

Good sushi and wine bars nearby would be nice.

Maybe a place where we can rent a cabana.

Don’t want to get ridiculous with cost but I don’t mind forking out some bucks for a good experience.

It sounds like Atlantic City is your best option. Not a lot of sushi, wine bars, or cabanas elsewhere. Try the casino hotels. There are some great restaurants and amenities to be found in the casino hotels but Atlantic City otherwise is not a nice town.

I've been to most of the Jersey Shore locations mentioned.

For what you're looking for, Wildwood Crest has several ocean front hotels, Regis in Wildwood Crest and Icona at Diamond Beach, both have balcony's that look over the beach. perfect location, close to Cape May and Wildwood has some good bars.

Dog Tooth Cafe, great food and great sports bar is very popular
and
Beach Creek Oyster Bar on the bay is great for Drinks overlooking the bay. Both have bands later at night.
While staying in Wildwood Crest you can easily go to Cape May (it's about 12 minutes away.),

Lavender Hall is elegant and nostalgic, great piano bar and Cape May has numerous great restaurants. If you stay in Wildwood crest you have the perfect spot and meets your requirement of Beach Front location.

I've been going to Sea Isle for years and TBH it's a sh*tshow. Little to no parking unless you have a driveway. The bars are overcrowded with 21 year olds at night unless you go to the Carousel during the day or Braca's/Henri's/Pour House at night.

I would recommend Avalon/Stone Harbor. Or if you're looking for a more quiet area I would go with Cape May or Margate /Ventnor. Lots of good restaurants and very very close to AC.

Don't have any hotel recommendations, but I love Cape May and I love Stone Harbor.

I've been going to Avalon/SH area for about 30 years. Even rented a house one year with the backyard facing the convent. I've never seen a living soul there. No joke, but we honestly think they leave for the summer, place seems so deserted.

They don't leave. THe problem is there are not many nuns these days.

I vote for Stone Harbor.

And the best property on Stone Harbor is Sisters of the Holy Child convent, right on the beach. No kidding, it's spectacular property. Only problem is, you probably need to be a priest or a nun to stay there.

Or a surfer. I think they open the property up to surfers during the surfing contest.

What amenities are you looking for?

I grew up in Stone Harbor and it's your best bet for an upscale town, beautiful beaches and good restaurants. The Reeds is the most high-end place to stay with great amenities. And it's on the Shelter Haven basin on the bay side, so you have waterside dining and bar options. But you are a few blocks from the beach - 5-10 minute walk. Go to the beach at 98th or 99th Street to avoid the crowds. If you want a more secluded beach experience or take a romantic walk, drive up to the parking lot at 122nd St. and walk out to the Point. You will not be disappointed with scenery. If you want to stay beachfront, the Windrift on 80th St. is a good option. A little more lively scene than the Reeds, but also more families/kids. That's about it. The rest of the places are motels. Nice but probably not what you seek for this trip. But that is the charm of Stone Harbor. It's almost entirely residential (no high rises), it's private (beach badge required), and there is no boardwalk. The small business district gets crowded at night, but it's pretty laid back most of the time. Let me know if I can give you any specific recommendations. Enjoy!

I'll be in Beach Haven for a family vacation from Friday through next week. Really enjoy that everything is within walking distance -- shopping, restaurants & bars, even church. Weather looking great.

I'm with Sluggo....The Woods !! Wildwood Crest has some nice places on the beach, but booking this late for a long weekend might present a problem. If you don't mind staying a couple blocks off the beach, try The Shalimar. Nice rooms decorated contemporary. Very clean. Been going to Wildwood for 28 years since high school. That town has turned from a teenage drunk spot to a nice family getaway location. Restaurants are great. The new Mud Hen Brewing company is awesome. Great BBQ menu with craft-made beers. The Crab Shack on Two Mile Landing is a great seafood place. Best boardwalk in the world.

Yep, it’s very nice except for all these damn Yankees fans.

Just to follow up....booked a couple of days at Icona Cape May.

Thanks for all of the recommendations.

While in Cape May, have dinner at the Peter Shields Inn. It’s BYOB and reservations are required. It’s a great restaurant and beautiful setting. I recommend the oysters with lime granita and paddlefish caviar to start, and the scallops main course. Great food and service, and the BYOB keeps it reasonable.

Will check it out. We are both big fans of sushi. Got a recommendation?

The Flanders...Now that brings back memories. As a kid growing up (late 50's through the mid teen years in the mid 60's), our family would spend a number of weeks each summer in Ocean City. Of course we could only afford an old apartment blocks off the Boardwalk. I remember gazing at the Flounders in awe, right on the Boardwalk. I vowed that someday, I would stay there.

That day never came. Moved to the West Coast after college in the early 70's, so those summers at the Jersey Shore are now just memories. I remember among other things, Copper Kettle Fudge, Mack and Manco Pizza and, before sundown, miniature golf for a dime or $.15. Price went up to a quarter after dark.

Maybe one of these years...

Growing up my family had a summer place on LBI, great memories. I really liked Cape May too. That said I haven't been the in 20 years. I've live in Hawaii for the last 15 years. If you want beach front and she or he is someone "special" I recommend someplace other than Jersey lol
