Great start to USA-Canada hockey

The game has been excellent. Most people didn't expect much from this series, given that so many of these guys all play on the same teams. But the Tkachuk brothers brought the hate. The Canadian crowd is pretty entertained.

Definitely put this on now if you're not watching. Third period just started, US up 2-1.

Replay should be used to correct the obvious blown call. After a minute of review (no matter the sport), if it is still inconclusive, the original call stands.
Ever watch European soccer? They'll overturn a call because somebody is 1/16" offside and take FOREVER to do it.

I have never figured out the popularity. Guys running all over trying to win 1-0. If they called stalling it would be like watching Iowa wrestle.
Now that I think it through. Iowa does sell the most 5 dollar wrestling tickets.

I understand that, but it sucks ... is incredibly boring w/ fake injuries ...
It has zero redeeming qualities .. The ultimate in no action ...
That is EXACTLY what I said until I gave it an honest chance. There is so much to learn about that is beyond what you think you know. All I did was ask myself how likely it is for BILLIONS of people to love a sport if it had no redeeming qualities and logically I realized that it's not possible.

Also, players who dive are shown yellow for simulation so they've pretty much cleaned that part of the game up. There aren't any commercials so the game actually has some flow and watching a team compete on up to five different fronts in the same season injects a ton of drama. Do you prioritize the league or Champions League (if you qualified) if not do you try to make a cup run where a mid-level team can win a trophy? How do you handle it when you have a massive league game on Sunday and then a big Champions League clash on Wednesday? Who do you sit?

You can also buy players from any league around the world but some of your players may want a move of their own. There aren't trades btw, it's just one team buying another team's player. Then there's the idea that contracts pretty much don't matter, if a player wants to leave he's pretty much going to be sold.

Last but not least there are rivalries and derbys that are 10x more intense than anything we have in America. They literally separate the visiting team's fans from the home team's with police officers. The imagination and ruthlessness put into the songs and chants is worth the price of admission.

I've been watching sports all of my life and have seen some pretty amazing things but when you look into the history of the rivalry and the fact that United kicked City when they were down for over 30 years you'll see that they couldn't even come up with a script this good in Hollywood. To put it in wrestling terms this is Bo pinning Myles Martin, Cenzo pinning Imar and Cassar beating Kolling Moore all wrapped into one except even that doesn't measure up to the Agueroooooooo goal.

Talking NFL....

There's going to be a whole lot of interesting decisions with the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the next few years, especially at WR, QB, and RB. At RB, you have guys like Frank Gore and LeSean McCoy, who had great numbers, but were rarely the best back and often not in the top 3. McCoy probably was the best back twice.

At QB, you have dudes like Eli Manning, Matt Ryan, and Phillip Rivers: some good counting numbers, frequently bad efficiency, and a lot of problems. Manning, to me, is Joe Flacco with one more ring. And both of his rings were mostly because of the defense and luck.

Meanwhile, we have a lot of deserving, older candidates not yet in.

Technically, I believe you can add 9 guys to the Pro Football HOF in a single class and I'd add 9 the next 2 years. My classes would be:

Class of 2025:
1) Larry Fitzgerald, WR (1st ballot)
2) Jason Witten, TE (1st ballot)
3) Jim Tyer, OT
4) Luke Kuechly, LB
5) Kevin Williams, DT
6) Steve Smith Sr., WR
7) Terrell Suggs, OLB
8) Henry Ellard, WR
9) Ken Anderson, QB

Class of 2026:
1) Rob Gronkowski, TE (1st ballot)
2) Adrian Peterson, RB (1st ballot)
3) Antonio Brown (LOL!), WR (1st ballot)
4) Ben Roethlisberger, QB (1st ballot)
5) Reggie Wayne, WR
6) Jahri Evans, OG
7) Earl Thomas, DB
8) Maurkice Pouncey,C
9) Bob Sanders, DB

Why Bob Sanders?

Well, it's very simple. They've started to be really nice to guys like Sterling Sharpe, who were absolutely dominant when healthy but just usually not healthy. All fine and good. Bob Sanders was almost never healthy. But when he was, he was downright extraordinary. Take 2006. The Colts had the worst run defense in the league all season. They get Sanders back. Suddenly they hold Larry Johnson, Corey Dillon, and Jamal Lewis all under 80 yards. It was absurd. Sanders was critical in their first 3 wins and should have won Super Bowl MVP.

Richard Sherman will be on the ballot soon. I think Earl Thomas was more important than him but I do think Sherm is a future HOFer.

Why Jim Tyrer and Antonio Brown? Technically, the Pro Football Hall of Fame has no "character clause." IN FACT, the writers are explicitly told to NOT consider off-the-field circumstances on pain of not being allowed to vote. But, everyone is just ignoring that. Tyer's family has publicly said they forgave him, for whatever that's worth. He's definitely the best player not in the HOF.

Torry Holt should probably make it in eventually. I'd add Pouncey first because centers are undervalued and Pouncey was often the best. I could also be persuaded to add Sherman before Pouncey OR Holt.

Why Ken Anderson? Uh, because he was almost never bad, was in the top 10 of passer rating most of his career, in the top 5 5 times, led the league in it 4 times, and led his team to a Super Bowl (which he would have won if his teammates could hold onto the football) while playing the whole 70s on a less-than-stellar team in the toughest division. Anderson should have been in long before Ken Stabler (who I'm not convinced should be in).

Postscript: one guy you never hear much about is NaVorro Bowman. When healthy, Bowman put up a career good enough for 69 points on Pro Football Reference's Hall of Fame Monitor. He is behind Ray Nitschzke. Bowman is the only ILB with 4 1st team All-Pro appearances to not yet make the HOF. Honestly, he had a better career than I thought, and I'm biased.

They just recently added Randy Gradishar. Randy Gradishar was not really any better than Bowman.

Note: I would have never added Jared Allen to the HOF, among others. L.C. Greenwood should have made it instead of Allen, easily. Allen was a system guy and is only at like 69 points in Hall of Fame Monitor. Which is to say, he wasn't better than NaVorro Bowman despite a much longer career.

anyone who says they like american football but can't possibly understand the allure of soccer is either lying or an idiot.

It's especially weird coming from a wrestling fan. Wrestling is way more of a niche sport than soccer and most people find it boring because they never took the time to learn about it which is exactly why people don't like soccer.

Some decent names there but there are 10-20 pre 70s players who are more deserving than many of these guys. None of them will get in due to recency bias but that doesn't mean they aren't deserving. The HOF had a chance to make all of this right during the 100th NFL Anniversary year when they announced they were going to do a much bigger class than usual but instead of pulling in very deserving football pioneers they watered the class down with "contributors" "coaches" "owners" and recent players instead of cleaning out the pioneer backlog once and for all.

And while we are ripping on the HOF, last time I checked it is the PRO Football HOF, not the NFL Football HOF. There are also deserving players from the pre-NFL days as well as a few from competing leagues that should be considered but won't be.

A rare smile for our Men’s hoops team of late, so kudos for winning at Minnesota! No, the Goophers aren’t great, but The Barn can be a tough place to play.

I agree with you about it being the Pro Football Hall of Fame. And by that metric, I think our very own Cameron Wake belongs. For two years, this guy was the best player, by far, in Canadian football prior to a very good NFL career that alone is borderline HoF.

Penn State hockey just crushed the 1 seed Maine 5-1 after allowing a 1-0 deficit early. If Penn State beats UConn, they'll make their first Frozen Four.

Penn State hockey is having a Quentin Wright 2010-11 season: like Q, Penn State was TERRIBLE early (they were 0-8-1 in their first 9 Big Ten games) but have been the hottest team in the country ever since.
