They are over-rated and may have already had their best stretch. 20 out of 25 and they make up 2 games on the Cards. Wildcard at best only if starters hold up.

They had a bad overall start, though, that may well skew those numbers a bit. We'll see what they are made of by the time the All-Star break comes along.

The Giants were 27-31 against teams above .500 last year and they won a World Series. The Cardinals were 39-33 and they did not even get to the World Series. They lost to those overrated Giants in the NLCS 4 games to 1. Oh, and you may recall the Giants started as a wild card team, beating the Pirates to advance. You make the playoffs and you have a chance to win it all. The Pirates will make the playoffs.

Pesky things, those statistics!

Going into the season, everyone thought the offense would be very good, but except for a short stretch, they've been horrible. Their success is due to an excellent pitching staff. That will go a long way, but the pitchers may eventually get frustrated with the lack of run support. They've also been fortunate with good health.

Dream on. You are right - they may make the playoffs. Winning it all - I would bet the house - No way.

The nattering nabobs of negativity are out today. I think you will find that most teams are below .500 against clubs above .500.

Don't bet the house. Baseball is built on dreams. No one gave the Giants a chance to win the World Series last year. They did. Stuff happens. Good pitching wins playoff games. The Pirates have good pitching. Am I saying the Pirates will win the World Series? Of course I am.:)

Not at all. I just don't believe they are world series contenders. I also don't think Pirates fans are great. Steelers, Penguins most certainly, great fans, but not Pirates

That's fine. I happen to think that us Pirate fans are excellent. We are going to set yet another attendance record this year, and we're saddled with an owner that is not even going to try to keep our best players once their contracts run out, most likely. We made it thru 20 years of losing seasons and still drew OK under the circumstances. In sum, you have no basis for your opinion other than your own preconceived biases, which is perfectly fine, but in no way shape or form necessarily accurate.

you are entitled to thinking you are excellent fans & i am entitled to my opinion as well. facts are facts however & if you look at attendance records over the last 20 years, you will see pittsburgh has been below the league average every year. it may have improved with winning recently, but as you said pirate ownership will never be willing to spend to keep the core in place. that my friend is fact, not opinion or preconceived bias.

You really have no idea what you're talking about. Show me a city of Pittsburgh's size that would not have a below average attendance after 20 years of losing. And at this point you have no basis for knowing what Pittsburgh ownership will or will not do to keep the core in place. You're a media lemming, nothing more.

What attendance would you expect from the fans of a team that was below .500 for 20 years? What do you think the attendance at Beaver Stadium would be with 20 straight losing seasons? Pirate fans are loyal, but we're not idiots.

Well said. You beat me by a hair.

You are right, i can't be sure what ownership will do, i am just going by history. hopefully, for your fans & improved attendance, they will. Jeez, you people are sensitive. i guess years of losing will do that.

No, reading comments by someone who doesn't know of what they speak will do that.

Tell me which of these statements is incorrect; Pirates had 20 losing season in a row, history tells us pirate ownership has not been willing to spend & pirate attendance had been below league average for many, many years. I think I know of what I speak. Sorry if it hurts.

Name calling & u people who cannot accept another's opinion are very juvenile.

I get it. Your team, whichever it is, sucks. And you can't stand the fact that the Pirates are better than that team is. You can't root for your team, because it sucks, but it makes you feel better to trash the Pirates. So you come here to feel better about yourself. Gotcha.

That makes you a dumbshit.

Bush league fans. How dumb do you have to be to WILLINGLY live in Pittsburgh, the armpit of the world? How dumb do you have to be to think Clemente was the greatest player of his time and Bob Prince was a great broadcaster?
It's a town with a well-deserved inferiority complex that makes Cleveland look good.

I make it a policy not to read the posts of those whose intellectual level does not reach beyond the 6th grade. You can have whatever opinion you like of Pittsburgh, or Roberto Clemente, or Bob Prince, but when you express it in such juvenile terms, any further reading of your posts is not worth my time. It takes a lot for me to put a poster on ignore, but you are now the 2nd person on my list. Good luck in junior high.

Excuse me - you assume your team is better than mine? How the hell do you know who my team is? I am not jealous of the Pirates, I was simply stating fact. I actually did not trash the Pirates, I merely stated I don't think they will be in the World Series. I do not think I am alone in thinking that. Actually - You are the dumbshit for making assumptions based on nothing. LMAO

Hehe. The crazies are out today. Father's Day puts them over the edge, I guess.

And Shelley: go ahead and laugh. Even a dumbshit like you deserves a nice personal joke every now and then.

It's nice to have these people who find joy in other peoples sadness. One has to wonder if they get great satisfaction when other people don't have enough to eat.

Since you like statistics soooooo much, enlighten this very board as to total runs scored by the Orioles in both the 1971 & 1979 World Series vs.my beloved Pirates sir.

Should we give our trophy's back simply because they outscored us?

:p:p:p:D:p:p:p

I am not arguing that the Pirates did not deserve the world series - in 71 & 79. You people are unreal. I merely stated my opinion that I don't think the Pirates are world series contenders this year. I may be wrong, but I am entitled to an opinion. And I never really quoted any statistics. My comments had to do with history regarding attendance, Pirate ownership & won/loss records. I never once stated runs scored, era, etc determined world series winners. Like I said, I am entitled to an opinion & just because i don't agree with you doesn't mean I am wrong & you are right. I respect that you are a fan & respect your opinion.

Here's one from the 1960 WS that the Bucs beat the Yanks in 7:
The Yankees outscored the Pirates 55–27, outhit them 91–60, outbatted them .338 to .256, hit 10 home runs to Pittsburgh's four, and got two complete-game shutouts from Whitey Ford.

Way to go Bucco's. Raise the Jolly Roger!!! Oh, I forgot that was 1960

Pirates payroll by year:

2010 - $44M
2011 - $61M
2012 - $63M
2013 - $74M
2014 - $78M
2015 - $86M

Yeah, they've proven they won't increase spending.....

And I sure as heck hope they don't extend the core guys that are locked up long-term beyond their current contracts. If they're smart, they'll let someone else pay Cutch for his 32-38 y/o seasons. Anyone think the Rays made a mistake letting Carl Crawford get paid elsewhere? The Cards let Pujols be paid elsewhere? The list goes on and on. It's just stupid to pay big contract to guys in their 30s, and I sure hope the Pirates don't make terrible decisions like signing those guys in a few years just to appease the people who think you have to spend money just to prove you can.

Agree 100%. Shelley has little knowledge of the new template for success in not only small markets, but now even some of the larger ones. By the way, have missed your baseball related comments of late.

I'll second that.
