OT: Reviving Friday Jukebox

Imagine the giants of the industry this man has crossed paths with over his long life. Mind boggling.
wrecking crew was the music industry, at least the pop music industry for a number of years through 60's and 70's. With and without attribution played on remarkable number of songs and albums and TV themes and commercials and/..........

Take one of the great, uniquely composed songs of all time ...

Remake it in same style/genre ...

I'm not saying the remake is superior, but while listening to it, you sink into the groove entirely and basically forget that this isn't how the song was "supposed" to be. Then you go back and listen to the original, and now that's the way it's supposed to be ...

Extremely rare feat.

Caught these boys up in Williamsport a few weeks back. The "rare feat" comment above made me think of this song because it's Little Feat-esque. Good stuff, The Smoke. This is not that other Delilah song.

Neil Sedaka was born March 13, 1939, which means he turns 86 today. You've probably heard some songs he's written. Here is one from the 1960s.

If you don't know the song but the melody sounds familiar, here is a cat food commercial from back in the day that used it that you may be recognizing.

Here is another Neil Sedaka song from the 1960s.

It used to be that AT&T had a monopoly and then the US government broke them up. Here is a novelty song about that that uses the same melody. "I beg of you don't take my phone / I want to lease, don't want to own."

But Neil Sedaka's big year was 1975. He wrote three songs that went to #1 in the country that year.

The first one is "Bad Blood," on which Elton John joins him on vocal.

The second one is "Laugther in the Rain." I like all three of these but I think this one is my favorite.

And lastly is the one the Neil Sedaka didn't actually perform. (He did perform it on his own album, but his version didn't go to #1.) It's "Love Will Keep Us Together" by The Captain & Tenille. If you notice, in the outro they namecheck Neil via "Sedaka is back."

Neil Sedaka turns 86 today. Thanks for the music, Neil.

I feel like Gerry Rafferty was very underrated. This is one of the great songs both in writing and in arrangement. The sax intro is legendary as well as the beat. As I understand it, the song is about him wanting to be a star all his life and then being disillusioned that he was uncomfortable with stardom and longed for something more in his life.

Here's a moldy oldie I heard the other day with some cool sax fills. Could pass for a Wings tune.

Sara Allen was born Mar 23, 1954 and turns 71 today. "Who is Sara Allen," you ask? She was the longtime girlfriend of Daryl Hall and the inspiration for the Hall & Oates song "Sara Smile." She was also the inspiration for an earlier, lesser known Hall & Oates song named "Las Vegas Turnaround," linked to below.

But she wasn't only the inspiration for Hall & Oates songs. She also co-wrote some of their hits, such as "Adult Education," "I Can't Go For That," "Did It In A Minute," "Maneater," "You Make My Dream Come True" and this one.

I just read that Roy Thomas Baker died on Apr 12. He was a record producer. Among others, he produced a lot of records by Queen (including Bohemian Rhapsody) and The Cars. And some Journey too, which I'm not a big fan of in general, but he produced the "Anytime / Feeling That Way" combo, which I liked. Here are a couple others I liked that he produced.
