it's one of those memories seared into my brain as much as 9/11 . . . working at Papa John's in State College, and a co-worker coming in to inform me that Garcia had passed away. I was devastated. I got on the bus by surprise a few years earlier . . . my brother had ambushed me when I was on my first leave from the Navy in the summer of '88 and dragged me to a show at the now demolished Silver Stadium in Rochester, NY.

I just remember the good times, the good music, the happy crowd, and a sense of family in the Dead community. The Grateful Dead have been such an important musical and spiritual influence on my life for decades. Cheers to the fat man who brought it all together.

Here's a pretty good audience recording of what many fans consider their greatest performance:

5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University

that second set opener of Scarlet-->Fire is some of the deepest jamming I've ever heard . . .

Never should have tried cleaning up. Too much of a shock to the system.

well I think the "system" kind of ate him up. The Dead had become this big monster that needed feeding. Jerry probably should have stepped away from the massive touring in 92 or 93. cleaned up then. but by 95 the stress had already worked its damage on him

very surreal day for me. We lived in Palo Alto at the time and wife was pregnant. Had first ultra sound for baby scheduled that day, so Jerry died and I caught first glimpse of my son. Spent the next couple weeks going to all these tributes around bay area including Golden gate park........

Jerry was the best guitarist of the FM radio era. No one really comes close.

Jerry most recorded artist of all time.

Second most live shows in history.

Proves Jimi Hendrix is a fraud.

Ummmmm, I have it on pretty good authority that SteveG was so incredibly blasted from handfulls of mushrooms and sugar cubes loaded with laundry detergent that he had no time to be emotional. It was much more of a Hunter S Thompson moment in his life.

Seat belts, lots of seat belts.

You might want to remember the greatness of Terry Kath of Chicago before you anoint Garcia as the best guitarist ever. And......Chicago is/was superior to the "Dead Head's" favorite band.
