Does it rhyme with "butts "? Or pronounced. "oots", or "yoots"? This all knowing board knows EVERYTHING .

I just noticed Utz chips at Sheetz recently.

Also, how is it that so many potato chip companies can operate in PA and still be profitable: Snyders of Berlin , Snyders of Hanover, Utz, Herrs, Wise, and 2 or 3 others. They all seem to be able to compete with national brand Lays and each other.

I like all of them except Wise.

They had a TV commercial in the late 1950s or so -- "Pronounce it Ooots or Utts, no ifs ands or butts."

I always liked the long u. As an aside, a lot of the smaller companies are owned by the larger ones. Troyer Farms was bought out a few years ago. They were promptly shut down and production moved to another existing facility. They were basically just bought for their name, and that's all they are at this point.

The only person who pronounces it "yoots" is my cousin Vinny.....

I went to college with some Hanover people. They were insistent it is pronounced as if it rhymes with "puts."

We always pronounced it with the "puts" sound. It probably depends on what part of PA you're from. My area was northern Lancaster/southern Dauphin county. I never liked their chips.

I remember driving past the Troyer farms plant on the way to Erie when I was a kid. The smell was so awesome!
Much much better than going to Johnsonburg for a football game down the street from a paper mill. That was so nauseous!
Ahhhhhh... Troyer Farms. I had forgotten about me them. Used to pass their fields as a kid.

My favorite is Snyders in the foil bag. They taste different then most chips. Wish I could buy them where I live now.

Can't you order on line?

Not sure. But generally I hate overpaying for anything, which is what usually happens unless you're ordering from a big retailer. Still, as a treat once in awhile... I'll look into it. Odd, because I order so much online but never thought to look for these.

As an aside, Pa chips and especially Pretzels have it all over national brands. How the hell did Rold Gold get popular?

I see Wege every once in awhile in the Whole Foods near work in Austin and buy them out. People think I'm wierd for dunking their pretzels in soup. Whatever, non-Pennsylvanian, keep eating Rold Gold you simpleton.

For the definitive answer, listen to Utz's own pronunciation.

Call the number below and you will hear their recording begin with their pronunciation of their name, as follows:

Utz are another "chip off the old block of spuds" for happy tailgating. Enjoy!

Rold gold is getting more popular, in part, due their not manufacturing anything with Penauts. It make sit a safe snack for kids with allergies and school snacks.

During the battle of the bulge, they were trying to decide what kind of chips the General wanted with his cold cuts. While he was reading the Germans demands for surrender, he told them, "Utz!"

The runner, thought that was his reply to the Germans by accident (since he was simultaneously reading the letter and answering the chips quesrion) and told the Nazis, "General McAuliffe said, 'Nuts!'" True story.

And, as they say, the rest is History.

It rhymes with Lutz. Where I come from in Lancaster County it rhymes with "foots". Down here in Philadelphia it rhymes with "putts".

Long "u"....so would that then be yoots? That's maybe how Yinzers would pronounce Utz.

Rhymes with 'Nutz', as featured prominently in a Mad Men episode....

IMO, Utz isn't even the best potato chip made in York County. Martins is superior. BBQ waffle or Kettel cooked.

York County folks pronounce it as it would rhyme with puts.

I'm from Hanover and my mother lived across the street from the Utzes growing up. They pronounced it like puts. I agree on Martin's BBQ still the best, but the original UTZ from the factory in cans and Grandma Utz are still addictive.
