Levittown, PA to Olney, MD
The wife and I have had a busy summer and we're looking into going up to Philadelphia for a couple of days before school starts. (Monday is our 30th anniversary.) We stayed at the Sheraton at Penn's Landing last time we visited and liked its proximity to South Street, but I'd like to ask the board for any suggestions. The post about the Reading Terminal prompted me here, I guess. The only must do is the Barnes Foundation on Monday. (Closed Tuesday.) Phillies are on the road. TIA.

Lowes Philadelphia at 12th and Market. Right by the Reading Terminal Market and Convention Center.
There are so many good restaurants now, it just depends on your taste and budget. I would try for a meal in Chinatown which is just a few blocks away. My favorite there is Penang. They have things on the menu which they will caution us tourists as "not for us", such as fish head soup. Very good food, and a far cry from your strip mall Chinese place. It's actually a Malaysian restaurant.

Try Le Cheri on Rittenhouse Square, or the restaurant Lacroix in the Rittenhouse Hotel for a fancy meal. Either would be a romantic anniversary dinner place.

The Dandelion is a gastropub also along Rittenhouse Square which is a fun place to dine. Or if you're adventuresome, head into South Philly and go to the South Philadelphia taproom on 12 St., I think it's around McKean. They feature head cheese tacos, gizzards and snails, and grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for desert, along with a great beer selection (you shouldn't be eating this stuff sober). It has an interesting atmosphere. It was featured on Diners Drive Ins and Dives, and you can see the clip on YouTube.

The Plough and the Stars is another good gastropub at 2nd and Chestnut. It's a lively place with a good atmosphere. For a fancy steakhouse, I prefer Butcher and Singer in center city or Del Friscos. Both are expensive but great meals. My favorite cheesesteak place is Dallessandros in Roxborough. You need to drive there. Avoid the Pats/Genos corner, and if you stay in the city there are other good ones like Tony Luke's that you can walk to.

Bon Appetit and Happy Anniversary

Rittenhouse, IMO, is the best, plus you can walk around in the evening without a 9.
Restaurants, I like this one, unique fusion menu....

Hotel Rittenhouse, right? I was going to recommend it. Great location. Smith and Wollensky on the ground floor for a good steak and happy hour or late cocktails. Also, the Omni on Chestnut at 4th, right in the middle of Society Hill, and a few blocks from Independence Hall etc. There's also a Westin on 17th between Market and Chestnut. It used to be the Ritz until The Ritz moved to Broad St.

My go-to restaurant in Philly has always been The Saloon at 7th and Clymer in South Philly. I've been going there since my college years. My girlfriend took me there for my 21st birthday (still remember what I ordered that night - 18 oz strip, full order of aglio olio, sauteed mushrooms, salad - I weighed 165 wet with a metabolism on the burn setting). The Saloon isn't much from the outside but the inside is beautiful, full of antiques. If you go, call ahead and ask for a table upstairs. Not cheap but won't break the bank. Check it out.

P.S. Has a Philly mob history too. ChickenmanTesta would like it.:) I'm certain the longtime deceased, real Phil 'Chicken Man' Testa did many times.

Depending on our price point and itinerary, and if I want to use my Hilton points, we've stayed at Hilton Garden on Arch/11th by the RTM, Doubletree on Broad/Locust near the Kimmel. Have also stayed and recommend the Lowes on Market and Sofitel on 17th.

Recent restaurants include most of the touristy ones, but that's why we're in town. Have not had a bad meal at any of them. In no order:
Buddakahn
Alma de Cuba
Amada
Oyster House
Devon Seafood

Jim, I wouldn't center my hotel stay near the Reading Terminal Market. I was there, actually in the Convention Center (same building), in March. Market St. in that area is torn up. You wouldn't enjoy staying in that neighborhood, in my opinion. It's a long term construction project. That would eliminate the Hilton at 11th and Arch, the Marriot at the Convention Center and Loew's on Market at 12th, all mentioned above (it's Loew's not Lowe's - probably an engineer poster:D).

I have stayed at the Latham in Rittenhouse. It was reasonable but I heard they were turning it into condos. Might not be available. Either way I would stay in Center City if possible. You will be near everything. I would check out Chinatown, Ben Franklin Parkway(Barnes is on the Parkway), Penn's campus. I would walk to Franklin Field and down Locust Walk at Penn. Penn State, Jim Thorpe, Chuck Bednarik, Red Grange, Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Vince Lombardi all played or coached at Franklin Field.

Hyatt at The Bellevue. You'll be in the middle of everything and can walk anywhere.

I agree with your comments about not staying in that part of downtown. Not only because of the construction project adjacent to the Loews, but that section of town kind of shuts down, and it's not an area I want to be walking around late at night, especially if you're a tourist who's not as familiar with the area.

Franklin Field is not the same since they turfed it decades ago, imo. Jim will want to stop by the Palestra, home to his beloved Penn basketball team. Jim, if you're reading this, you might want to call the Palestra ahead of time to see if they'll let you in. So happens I have the number for the office there: VU 1 - 9047.:)

You're a riot.

Any traces of Legionaire's disease left there?;):)

Just stay away from the air vents

I last stayed there about 20 years ago for a long weekend with the missus back when the jazz club ( forget the name) was there.

The " new" Ritz Carlton a few blocks north on Broad would be a good choice also. At least stop in for a late night drink. Spectacular reuse of an old building.

Center City has some really, really fine hotels.

I remember cold calling the buildings on the east side of Broad, adjacent to City Hall, soon after college. The Western Savings Building was one. I recall the first time I walked into the offices of Morgan, Lewis and Bockius, perhaps the stuffiest and smuggest law firm on Earth, and thinking, "WTF am I doing here?" What an office! Talk about a totally intimidated fish outta water. I got over it, though.:)

I've been in the bowels of many of those buildings working as an engineering consultant. MLB was actually one of my firms clients.

Some of the Frankenstein-ish systems I ran into was both scary and fascinating.

About a quarter mile south from City Hall on Broad, on the east side, is one of those secure buildings that hold (or held) valuable paper and microfilm records for law firms, banks etc. You drive across the sidewalk through a tall and wide garage door down into this facility. No one would know what was kept there or the purpose of the entrance unless, of course, you knew. Kind of cool when you're twenty something.

Priceline is your friend, whether it's Express Deals or Name Your Own Price. We've spent dozens of nights in Philly over the years and go through Priceline every time. I've saved hundreds of dollars if not thousands, and there's not a bad 4-star in the city. We've stayed in all of them.

IMO Hotel Monaco might be the best of all of them. Get a higher floor with a view of Independence Hall, priceless!

Not an engineer but a bad speller. You're right on the market street east area being a little deserted late at night. North of Chestnut and east of Broad St. it gets more sketchy late night.

Jim, take a look at Priceline. I saw some good rates in Philly for weekends.

They're tearing out the underground Galleria shopping mall. It extends from 8th to about 10th or 11th. All the sidewalks there on the north side of Market are fenced with plywood on top. They're also doing work to other buildings on the north side of Market St. in that area. It was a mess when I was there a few months ago.
