OT: Top Five TV Shows of All Time

The Today show apparently conducted some kind of poll of "people in the TV industry" as to their Top 5 TV shows (i.e., series) of all time, and, in case you do not want to watch the Today segment linked below, here are the results:

1. The Sopranos
2. The Wire
3. Breaking Bad
4. Mad Men
5. Seinfeld

I guess I have some TV watching to do. I have never seen a single episode of Nos. 2, 3 or 4. Not sure I could put anything above Seinfeld. The list also betrays a real focus on the last couple of decades.

I'm guessing that Midnighter is gonna be all over this subject.

I cant speak to the old time shows, so my list is essential 2000's on (besides Seinfield) and I normally do not love the critically acclaimed stuff, but for me:

1. Breaking Bad
2. The Office
3. Seinfield
4. The Wire
5. 30 Rock (maybe?) or GoT or Modern Family

1. The Sopranos
2. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
3. The Wonder Years
4. Seinfeld
5. Breaking Bad

At in the family
MASH
Breaking bad
Star trek
Seinfeld

Your list closely resembles mine. All in the Family was the first show that came to mind. My list in no order:

All in the Family - Archie Bunker is one of the all-time iconic TV characters
Honeymooners - so many other shows in later decades used this show's formula
MASH -- for it's writing, acting and social relevance
Star Trek -- groundbreaking, maybe the best intro of all time
Gonna go with Sopranos in my top 5. This was can't miss TV for me for many years.

Others I'd consider:

Seinfeld
Mary Tyler Moore Show
Cheers
Breaking Bad
Hill Street Blues

That 70s Show was stupid, but funny. Eric Foreman and his mom were twits, along with the Pinchiottis.

Red Foreman was funnier than Archie Bunker and Mr. Jefferson put together.

Red Skelton
George Goble
Dragnet
Barney Miller
Ed Sullivan
Untouchables
Have Gun Will Travel
Maverick
All in the Family
The Jeffersons
Green Acres
M Squad
In no particular order.

Good. I honestly never got Cheers. A couple of the characters drove me nuts (Diane) and when the got romantic it ruined the show.

Star Trek (Original Series) - spawned a franchise still going strong today
Honeymooners - classic
Mannix - possibly the best of the tough-as-nails hard-boiled detective shows (Bruce Geller wrote, produced and directed)
Mission: Impossible (Original Series) - again, spawned a strong franchise, another Bruce Geller show
Batman - hard to choose this last one but truly a one-of-a kind show

Of the modern shows mentioned, Mad Men is a standout (my wife is currently binge-watching this series). I am a child of the 1960s, can you tell?

Honorable mentions to Hawaii Five-O (Original Series), Wild Wild West, Irwin Allen's Land Of The Giants, Boardwalk Empire, Downton Abbey (not my favorite but the little I watched of it, it was beautifully filmed) and Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Cmon, now...Deadwood people or even Game of Thrones maybe. Surprised Lost has not been mentioned. Though not my top 5, it certainly is arguable. Thought some seasons contained aimless fluff but overall pretty riveting mystery. Twilight zone, that is best still..totally ahead of its time and thought provoking.

Will have more thoughts soon...but agree with three of those.

1. The Rockford Files
2. Seinfeld
3. The Fugitive
4. The Andy Griffith Show
5. McHale's Navy (Ensign Parker and Capt. Binghamton would make my mom giggle, and I loved to hear her giggle).
6. Deadwood

Kojak - season one or two.
Hawaii 5-0 - episodes where Danno books 'em or was that all episodes?
Gong Show - only episodes featuring the Unknown Comic or Gene Gene The Dancing Machine.

5. MASH
4. Seinfield
3. Friends
2. The Office
1. Friday Night Lights
I would agree on Sopranos and Seinfeld, but I'd add I love Lucy, the Jackie Gleason Show, and maybe the Ed Sullivan Show or All in the Family, or maybe even the Tonight Show with Johnnie Carson to the list.

1. Breaking Bad
2. Seinfeld
3. Walking Dead
4. All in The Family
5. Tie: Quantum Leap / Survivor

Full disclosure, I've never seen Sopranos, HOC, GOT, or SOA.

1. Penn State Football
2. Steelers Football
3. Penguins Hockey
4. Monday Night Football (with Cossell)
5. Pirate Baseball

I am not sure how a list like that can be taken seriously if they don't at least include one these: MASH, All in the Family, the Simpsons, Andy Griffith Show, Star Trek

Even if I were to make a list of recent shows I think they got it wrong.

Walking Dead
Orphan Black
Mr. Robot
Firefly- Only went one season but best Space SciFi show made.

Does not seem fair to compare series from pay TV like HBO/Showtime with shows on over the air TV (ABC, CBS, etc) Can push the limit a lot more on pay tv shows.
