OT: Yesterday was anniversary of Dr J's famous scoop shot

That was the NBA Finals - on May 11.

I think today, they are halfway through their regular season on May 11.

kind of interesting looking at that season

regular season went from Oct 12, 1979 to March 30, 1980

(current season ran from October 25 - April 12)

first round of playoffs in 1980 were best of 3 series

second round were best of 7, only Seattle/Milwaukee went the full 7

conference finals were best of 7, Lakers and 76ers won in 5 games

One of those moments in sports that you look at the person next to you in disbelief as your brain contemplates and asks, "Did I just see that?"

I had the chance to spend some time with Dr. J.
I am a former HS BB coach from Phila. I was asked to bring some kids for background in a NBA charity commercial the Dr. was in.
The Director and crew were form NY. He asked the Doctor to dunk the ball for the camera, actually, he asked him to do such in multiple shots. It amazed me how effortlessly he did so. Sort of like you or I dropping a piece of paper in a trash can. The other thing about him was his fingers. They looked like spider legs and I think he could have wrapped his hand around mine twice when we shook hands. I know his hands were referred to as "meat hooks". Very humble man. Where are THOSE now ?????

a great compilation of his greatest dunks here:

(btw, watching that cradle and windmill over Cooper again . . . holy shnikeys, the elevation is SICK!)

I remember him dunking over Artis Gilmore, who I believe was over 7 feet tall and could really jump. Quite a feat for Doc.

I remember as a kid, reading a Sports Illustrated article on Artis Gilmore. The cover photo had him standing in front of a giraffe in a zoo (perhaps in San Antonio).

The reason for this photo? Artis was once asked by an older woman "Son, do you play basketball?". His response "No ma;am, I clean giraffe ears at the zoo".

Awesome.

Taking advantage of a Sixers thread, Colangelo spoke to the media and gave another example of how dumb he is. He said the worst case for the Sixers in the draft is to end up with only the 7th pick. That is an impossible scenario. 7th means 3 teams jumped into the Top 3, which means the Lakers are not in the Top 3 and their pick goes to us at 6.

It was reported that Gilmore could touch the top of the backboard. A reporter asked him if he could do it and Gilmore replied, put a 20 dollar bill up there and i ll show you.
