Pan Ams coming up

I saw the USA wrestling preview, I don't think Cuba is going to be attending given that no US people would run into them early.

I believe Cuba is attending now. They weren’t at first but seem to have sent a team. In the FLO preview they have the Cuban as a match to watch with Gilman. I guess in the previous meeting Gilman teched him but it was chippy and the Cuban actually slapped Gilman. I’ll see if I can find the match. Match now attached but it’s in this Flo article.

The following can be found on the USA Wrestling pages.

The United States claimed the Pan American Greco-Roman team title with 165 points, ahead of runner-up Mexico with 148 points and third place Cuba with 101 points. The USA finished with four champions and three bronze medalists.

Maybe not top competition, but pretty good showing.

Take what you can, when you can.

Just bumping b/c the Men's FS is up today.

Here's the upcoming matches.

It looks like some of these weights don't have enough wrestlers to even have a bracket. And judging from the competition, the US guys won't be on the mat very long. But Zain will be on B around the same time Gilman will be on A maybe around 12:15-ish pm EST.

All seven guys going today are in the finals, which will take place tonight. I noticed that Nick Lee in the background of the Gilman semi against Cuba, along with Zain, whose ailment evidently isn't serious enough to keep him from being a spectator.

Gilman ended his match with an interesting fall. Up 8-2 he was off to the side looking cradle when Alvarez made the weird/disastrous decision to reach between his own legs for Gilman's right leg, leaving his own head right next to his own knee. Gilman probably pounced on that cradle as soon as it was offered up, and Alvarez never let go of Gilman's leg despite needing that arm to get off his back.

Cox went yesterday and finished 32-0 in three matches. I felt particularly bad for this Venezuelan guy who really looked like he should not be out there at all.

Looks like he took a wrong turn on the way to the Bald and Fat Classic.

I see Gilman beat Darian Cruz 11-0 in the first period. He also beat him 11-0 at Bout At The Ballpark this year. Thomas is a different wrestler than the one who lost to Cruz in the 2017 NCAA semis as the #1 seed.
Cant be, he LEFT the best lightweight room in the country….. or DID he 🤔

By all accounts Gilman's training situation then was fairly volatile. I'm happy he's gotten a fresh start.
Anyone think Iowa wrestling will tweet "Hawkeye wrestler wins gold"?

If they don't acknowledge Iowa champions with Pennsylvania training they are left with nothing to claim, so yes. I imagine Iowa will assume credit for Cael's work.

Ex Hawkeye wrestler learns to love wrestling again, wins gold. From the lightest to the heaviest weights in both of our rooms, the wrestlers have the confidence to keep attacking. Give up a point? Score several of your own. Kyle scored no risk, almost free points with ankle picks. So did Thomas. Folk or free, the way to win is to score.

There was some spectacular chain wrestling this weekend. Our wrestlers were not afraid to lose. In the very infrequent times they do, they learn and emerge even better. We are blessed to see such fine young gentleman and ladies build skills and commitments that will last the rest of their lives. When do we start our program for all the ladies out there?

I was really hoping that Sarah Hildebrandt would get picked up by NLWC after her brother came on board at PSU, but it seems she's pretty content out here in COS. They have a pretty good training group at the OTC with her and Jenna Burkert.

Hildebrandt might be the best leg-lacer I've seen among current US wrestlers, male or female. If she gets it locked in, which she does quite frequently, you're going for a ride.

Also, you see signs of RBY in Gilman's wrestling now. His first takedown against Alvarez in the semi looked to be a very RBY-influenced arm drag slide-by sort of thing.

Hilde said in one of the early podcasts upon coming to the team that he saw himself heading to Colorado after the wrestling season.

So the family must really like it there. I don't think he will be wrestling based on my recollection and it was finding a job and settling down.

Don't blame him as my couple times to CO were awesome and it was beautiful country.

Yeah, I think the OTC is really the elite place to be for WFS right now. Could see that changing if the Iowa Program starts rolling, or if PSU adds a collegiate team, but it would take time for that critical mass to happen.

I'm actually a Colorado native--love that state so much--apart from the cost of housing, anyway. Forgot until his pee-wee post last week that Bo was born in Rifle--just down' the road from my own birthplace.

I know its only one loss, but is Dhesi even top 20 in the world?

If Gwiz is on far side of hill and Gable obviously done, who is gonna step up?? Kerk???

Are we ever gonna see Toothpick Tony on the mat again?

Dhesi won the Pellicone tourney last year. That's one of the big events used for Worlds/Olympics seeding.

Where is your birthplace? I grew up in Gunnison and the Vail valley. I miss CO but will definitely settle back there at some point

We bought our house in COS shortly before our son was born. He's 20 months old in a couple of days. According to Zillow, our house has appreciated more than 200k in that time.

Still plenty of cheap land in CO, in pretty decent areas in the mountains. The problem is you'd be far from any basic services, so you'd better be retired, capable of teleworking or using it for a vacation home. My wife and I are pretty seriously looking at buying land in SW CO or NM for a vacation/retirement property.
