Penn State 2019 Season articles

Holuba Hall looks a lot more bright and inviting than the outdated version from a couple years back.

During the brief open segment of Penn State’s practice last Wednesday, left tackle was manned by rising redshirt freshman Rasheed Walker
while the right side was handled by rising redshirt junior Will Fries.

Speaking to reporters after practice, Franklin described the sides as the natural positions for the two, but also, that the goal ultimately is to have the flexibility to be able to play on either side.

Further explaining that Walker probably would have played for the full season last year had the NCAA’s new redshirt rule not been instituted, allowing true freshmen to play in four games while preserving their redshirts, Franklin offered an assessment of his continuing maturation. “We've been very pleased with him,” said Franklin. “He's big, he's strong, he's athletic. He needs a thousand reps just to gain the experience. But yeah, so far so good.”

Gonzalez echoed the sentiment, repeatedly describing Walker as a “freak athlete.”

“He has super quick feet. He can keep up with anyone. He has a pretty good punch,” said Gonzalez. "He's just a freak athlete. His feet are just so smooth and he has good flexibility, he has a good hip bend. So he's just a very freak athlete.”

  • Sean Clifford scrambled twice. He looks a lot faster than I expected.
  • Tommy Stevens was in full pads but did not take any reps while we were there.
  • Shaka Toney ran with the first team defensive line. There's some stiff competition for the starting spot alongside Yetur Gross-Matos, so that battle is far from over.
  • Marquis Wilson and CJ Brown got some reps against the first team offense. Tariq Castro-Fields and John Reid are in no danger of losing their starting spots, so this was probably just to get those two some good reps.
  • Daniel George ran with the first team offense. There is usually a four-man rotation at receiver, so this is a great way to build some chemistry among those guys.
  • Mike Miranda ran at left guard, while CJ Thorpe ran at right guard. James Franklin loves versatility from his linemen so it's good to see some guys get comfortable at multiple positions.
James Franklin seems to like his options for Givens' replacement.

"I think at the defensive tackle position (Antonio) Shelton has really grown. You see him taking a lot of the stuff that he's done in the weight room and really start to transfer it to the field. And then I think the other guy is (Judge) Culpepper. Culpepper is really starting to show some flashes that looks like he may be able to factor in. That's obviously not mentioning Windsor and PJ Mustipher, as well as some other guys."

OT RASHEED WALKER & LB MICAH PARSONS

Parsons is 6-foot-3, 243 pounds. That gives you an idea of how big redshirt freshman left tackle Rasheed Walker is. Walker is listed at 6-6, 314.

DE YETUR GROSS-MATOS & LB MICAH PARSONS

We're think there may be a day when we look back at this shot of DE Yetur Gross-Matos and Parsons, and say, "Remember when THEY were on the same team?" Who is that marching around wearing his hood in the background (left side)?

QBS WILL LEVIS & TOMMY STEVENS

Freshman Will Levis (left) is taking second-team reps this spring while Tommy Stevens (2) is limited following off-season surgery.

Most interesting comment? “[QB Will] Levis is becoming a star.”

It seems obvious that Hamler and Clifford have strong chemistry- 2020 offense sounds potentially quite exciting. Not saying 2019’s won’t be, but it seems unlikely that Clifford will be the guy (sounds like TS would have to lose the job rather than Clifford winning it)

Levis in 2020 isn't going to hand over the job easily.

Franklin keeps mentioning transfers helping out at WR and OL. This guy would really help (older tweet).

Despite not holding a Nittany Lion offer, Kumah visited Happy Valley back in 2014 with DT Tim Settle.
After redshirting his freshman campaign in Blacksburg, he 6'2 Kumah accrued 70 receptions for 883 yards and nine touchdowns in two years. Last season, Kumah was tied for eighth in the ACC with seven touchdown grabs.

Read a note from a Notre Dame site that Notre Dame is no longer pursuing Kumah. We look like the big boy of the remaining targets.

Last month, Virginia Tech grad transfer Eric Kumah confirmed Penn State as a top potential landing spot, along with Cincinnati, Louisville, Notre Dame, Old Dominion and Texas Tech. He plans to visit Happy Valley in early April.

Penn State remains in the market for potential transfer additions at multiple positions, and there's a new name to know as the Nittany Lions assess options.

Weston Carr, a receiver who spent the last four seasons at Azusa Pacific University in Los Angeles County, Calif., is currently on campus for an official visit, Lions247 confirmed on Friday.

He earned Division II first-team All-American honors in 2017 after turning 86 receptions into 1,458 yards and 15 touchdowns. Listed 6-foot-2, 200 pounds on the Azusa Pacific roster, Carr played in 35 contests during the last three seasons.

A product of Benicia High School in the San Francisco Bay Area, he redshirted as a freshman in 2015 before delivering consistent production. Since 2016, Carr has caught 167 passes for 3,005 yards (18 per reception) and 36 touchdowns.

I really like that photo of Gross-Matos and Parsons ... it brings back memories of another pair who played DE and LB 20 years ago -- Courtney Brown and Lavar Arrington. If for some reason Yetur decides to stay for 2020, perhaps he and Micah can duplicate the #'s 1 & 2 NFL draft slots.

This offense may just fall into place and be a good one. Some questions along the OL, but there is some talent there with guys who have played some football already at PSU. If they deliver and TS can throw strikes...it should be a really fun offense to watch this year.

Lamont did not look good in that video.....

I know I know it’s only 10 seconds of footage, but he definitely hasn’t looked as strong in coverage as I would have expected from a former corner.

And yes Hamler and Dotson look very good

How many safties will stick with Hamler on a free release with 7 yards of cushion? I'll give you a hint...0.0.
