Former Honaker kicker Jordan Stout leaving Hokies for Nittany Lions

Sixty of Stout’s 71 kickoffs resulted in touchbacks last season, a percentage of 84.51. Only LSU’s Avery Atkins (89.87), Alabama-Birmingham’s Nick Vogel (88.75) and Georgia’s Rodrigo Blankenship (85.42) were better among NCAA Division I FBS kickers.

By comparison, Penn State’s Rafael Checa ranked 61st in that category a season ago.

“Penn State struggled mightily on special teams last season and with a new special teams coordinator [Joe Lorig] on staff this fall, there seems to be a recommitment to the unit,” Koerbler said. “I don’t think anything highlights that more than bringing in someone like Stout, who can impact Penn State’s special teams in a number of ways – not only in 2019 but beyond.”

Reminder, 4 star WR John Dunmore arrives on campus soon. He started in the Underarmour All American game.

Ross Tucker: Dunmore is stud. Great get by Penn State. He has size and he's a baller. Tremendous in contested catch situations. Went against good competition in Florida and busted their chops. Size, speed, and good route running.
Bob Flounder: Went down and saw Dunmore at the Underarmour AA practices. He was always open. No one could guard him. Was the best wide receiver on the field.

Going to major in Engineering as well.

Check him out now. He's added 27 pounds over his first year in Penn State's training program and may have gotten even faster. He recently was timed running 40 yards in a stunning 4.33 seconds, making him one of the fastest on the entire team — as a 255-pound defensive end.

Parsons came to Penn State as a rare 5-star recruit known for his unusual combination of size, strength and speed. He led the team in tackles as a true freshman.

But he admits that Oweh outshines him in physical tests and gifts.

“Jayson gets mad at me because I’m heavy on him," Parsons said. "I see Jayson’s freakish abilities. I used to think I was a freak, but Jayson … he’s beyond me.

"His broad jump is better than mine, he’s faster and he weighs more than me. I tell him, 'Man, you have everything in the world to be one of the greatest players …

"Jayson is the most freakish player I've ever seen."

“There’s nobody on the field who can consistently outrun Jayson Oweh," Hawkins said.

"He looks like a freaking robot," said receiver Justin Shorter. "He’s the prototype. If you were to build a d-end, that's what you would want."

Penn State added to its on-campus haul of wide receivers over the weekend when graduate transfer Weston Carr moved into his home for the next year. The former Division II All-American at Azusa-Pacific committed to the Nittany Lions in the spring and arrived in State College on Sunday.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Carr is expected to compete at one of the outside receiver spots for his one year in Happy Valley. Carr caught 167 passes for 3,005 yards and 36 touchdowns in three seasons at the Division II level. He caught 15 of those touchdowns in 2017, earning All-America honors, and hopes that production can carry over at a higher level

"Seeing through my brother go through this whole entire process in college as well as the NFL, it’s kind of prepared me to see what it takes to play at this level.”

ACC preview from Athlon. Pitt (our fourth game!) predicted to go 6-6.

If you scroll down to the ACC Unit rankings, Pitt only has 1 position group ranked among the Top 7 in the ACC. The defensive line is ranked 6th.

Pitt – the defending Coastal champs – returns only 10 starters and has to replace two 1,000-yard running backs. The Panthers are counting on new play-caller Mark Whipple to help quarterback Kenny Pickett take a step forward in his second season under center

Urban Meyer on Cowherd. As far as the players that left the program, WR Juwan Johnson had talent but played less snaps than a healthy Justin Shorter in the bowl game. McGovern, Bates, and Givens were good players for us but we have higher ranked players taking their spots.

Meyer, now a college football analyst with FOX Sports in addition to his student ambassador gig at Ohio State, appeared on this week's The Herd with Colin Cowherd.

Asked to pick a team from the Big Ten outside of the top two that could make noise this season, Meyer gave Cowherd three options.

"I think Penn State's not sneaky good, I think they are good," Meyer said. "Penn State has recruited very well. One thing to watch there is they've had some players leave the program. Wisconsin had a little bit of step backwards last year, but I anticipate them to be there. One to watch is Northwestern. They've got a five-star quarterback transfer from Clemson. I know Ohio State has to go up there on a Friday night and that's not a good place to play."

Part of a continuing series examining the Power 5 and top Group of 5 teams for the 2019 college football season.

Before Penn State’s defense hit the practice field for more conditioning drills this summer, defensive coordinator Brent Pry used part of his allotted meeting time to draw attention to some preseason hype.

“We’re trying to make sure we’re hungry and humble,” Pry told The Athletic. “We threw up the article that talked about Penn State’s defense being ranked No. 2 preseason and I kind of patted the guys on the back. And then I gave them the, ‘This has nothing to do with who we’ll be in 2019. It’s a trap. … Take it as a last compliment for what we did in 2018.’

“We’ve tried to, you know, look at so much film in the offseason and try and find where your weaknesses where we can be better at some things, and I feel like we’ve done a good job with that.”

2019 Big Ten coaching rankings: Who takes Urban Meyer's spot at the top of the conference?
Ranking all 14 Big Ten coaches entering the 2019 season
by Tom Fornelli

The Big Ten coaching landscape looks different heading into the 2019 season. CBSSports.com has been ranking coaches for the last few years, and Urban Meyer was always battling Nick Saban and Dabo Swinney for the best coach in the country, and as a result, he was always the highest-ranking coach in the Big Ten. But Meyer's gone now, and it's left an opening at the top of the conference.

Who has taken the Big Ten's Iron Throne?

BIG TEN COACHES

1

PENN ST.

James Franklin: Franklin ascends to the top spot, and it makes sense. Meyer took over Ohio State in 2012, but the Buckeyes weren't eligible to for a conference title until 2013. Since then, only two other coaches besides Meyer have won Big Ten titles, and Franklin's one of them. He inherited a Penn State program that was in shambles following the Jerry Sandusky revelations, and Bill O'Brien's unexpected departure. After an (expected) slow start that saw Penn State go 14-12 in his first two years, the Nittany Lions have gone 31-9 the last three seasons, won a conference title and played in two New Year's Six bowls. Now, as 2019 begins, expectations will only get higher.

Boy, Franklin seems maudlin, same with Pry. My concern with Franklin is that he is just too emotional. When things are good, he seems to want to point it out all the time. I HATED the talk before the bowl game last year about winning 10+ games a season for 3 years in a row. They had not beaten Kentucky yet and I thought the team reflected his position as they came out listless. When things are bad, you get the "elite" speech and then a total bottom-out on homecoming, after a bye, to a banged up michigan state team. It feels a bit like we don't handle success real well and we do not handle losses real well. I think it is a reflection on how emotional Franklin is. You could tell he was out of sorts in that interview, not sure if that was because of Parks or what.

You have Idaho, Buffalo, Pitt, and Maryland for Clifford to get settled into the position.

Penn State star Yetur Gross-Matos and the only father he's ever known, Robert Matos, have helped each other through tragedy. Ting Shen for ESPN

Yetur Gross-Matos leans back on the couch and kicks his size 17 feet up on an ottoman, resting his heels inches away from a corner of the quilt folded neatly in front of him.

Penn State's star defensive lineman and 2018 sacks leader sinks into a rare moment of stillness during the weeklong leave from campus he is spending with his family at home in Northern Virginia. He's wedged a workout, a pickup basketball game and pizza with his little brother and his dad, a track meet with his little sister and a laugh-filled dinner with the rest of the Gross-Matos crew into his hectic day.
