Penn State has added Bob Palko, one of the most successful coaches in the history of Pennsylvania high school football, to their staff.

Adding Palko to the staff is a huge addition for James Franklin. While it remains to be seen exactly what his role will be, Palko is one of the most well respected and connected high school football coaches Pennsylvania has ever seen. Especially in Western PA and the Pittsburgh area. Palko is the father of former Pitt quarterback Tyler Palko.

Being able to add extra staffers such as this is always a huge addition for a college football program. Adding one with huge in-state connections and was a long-time supporter of your biggest in-state rival is even better for the program.

Fantastic Hire

Wow, should really help recruiting. He is legendary in WPIAL land.
With this hire, I just wish that the WPIAL was pumping out a plethora of great players like in the 60s, 70s, 80s and even 90s. However, in recent years, it really has dried up. Unfortunately, even at the big schools, there just aren't as many kids who play football now in the WPIAL, as many have migrated to other sports. Nevertheless, I hope that Palko's presence will be able to help us land many of the few great D-1 talents that the WPIAL still produces.

Hoping his influence reaches far beyond the WPIAL. Over the years he has had to work with a lot of coaches…..guys he hired then moved on, guys that attended summer camps with him, old players that are now coaching. Certainly into eastern Ohio and W Virginia, perhaps some national reach.

Makes you wonder about the carrot offered for a Pitt guy to go work at Penn State - industrial espionage! Or maybe he is just looking for his next big break and the best path takes him through Happy Valley.
