Penn State had much better rushing success with Limegrover

What are your thoughts? Did we down grade or upgrade?

LimeG also had the benefit of two NFL starters at RB behind his OLs and would have had a third if not for a covid protocol heart issue found in Brown.

The pass blocking under Traut is better than any we've seen since Kerry Collins was under center.

Probably a push right now. Traut still lacks data points.

Army runs the ball better than anyone. Any of you fans out there wanna trade offenses with Army?

Hard to run on 6, 7, 8 and even 9 man fronts. Like passing against a dime package.
Don't care who the coach is.

Run blocking up the middle is horrid. The interior couldn’t push an empty wheelbarrow. I believe Limegrover had the same issues. Trautwein has greatly improved the pass blocking. Eventually not being able run 2/3 yards on 3rd and 4th down will catch up to us. We run into a windy, rainy, or cold day we’ll need to run the ball. Think in crunch time Clifford or Warren are going to be the go to guys.

Except for one caveat....All 4 teams we have played so far run the exact same pinch down 3-4 defense which is specifically designed to stop runs between the tackles. Wisconsin might have the best run defense in the nation. We got 50 on them, guess what ND got? That's right. 7 yards rushing, TOTAL. Also, Nova has the best defense in all of the FCS and that's right they run the 3-4. Auburn has 3 war daddy down linemen and watch this week when they shut down LSU. Ball St played the most hilarious defense I ever saw, as if someone told them that they would win the game if they stopped penn st running between the tackles....
Look, the book is, make Sean Clifford beat you and so far everything has been by that book...this week we see the first 4-3 of the season lol, that's how crazy this whole "run liability" bs has been. If Indiana tries to play us like the others, Yurcich will do what he has been doing, if they want to actually play him honest, then he will run the football better than you can even imagine. This is maybe the best OC in the nation and if you can't see that by now then I have no idea what to tell u.

Indiana plays the 4-3, sometimes 4-2. Do you think we run better against them than we have anyone? They are 35th against the run. 73rd against the pass. Or perhaps more of the same, taking what they give and playing to our strength.

What would you do after seeing Penn State in 4 games knowing what you know?

if I were a DC against PSU, I would go with the Iowa approach they have used on us for years. keep everything in front of you and force the OFF to go on long sustained drives. allow no big plays. I would never go to one safety high, in fact probably move to a flex LB-S type position like Hudson played at UMich. so I am thinking 4-2 with one LB spying either RB or QB. with so much PSU firepower for the big play, I cannot believe people are playing us like this.

Yurcich, will dictate to them what is going to happen, then adjust to what they want to do. He will not try to fit a square peg into a round hole. If they line up outside the tackles he will not hesitate to run inside them, but if they want to pinch down and play quarters in the back five, he will stick it to them with the receivers. It's choose your poison with him. Frankly it's a lot like 2019 Ohio State with Fields and his receivers but a bit different in that he can use the tight ends a bit more. No we don't have their rb, but we do have the backs who can get the yards we need to move the chains, and we have not seen just yet what 10 is about in the second level and he just might get there this Saturday night if they want to play him honest.

Yeah I would and assuming Indiana has the personnel which I doubt but if I had the horses use a 4-3 base either over / under depending on the spot and strong side of the formation. If in 10 personnel specifically 2x2 I would spin into a 3-4 front and play either quarters or man based on down distance….stunt and or blitz where when I can..make it hard for Sean and Mike they would have to think the whole game….special attention to Dotson…then our TEs…make Washington and lambert beat my secondary…

Wisconsin had on a run blitz the entire game and they are really good at it. I think that we could have run outside but our backs aren't outside guys. Auburn also played the run heavy with their linebackers and 3 large humans on the D line. This is why our tight ends and receivers were open over the middle all day long with play action. Ball State went all in to stop the run. Villanova played us tough with that one linebacker, I believe #26, coming on every down through different gaps to get in the backfield to disrupt plays. This was what Wisconsin did as well. We seem to counter this with short passes to the edge so that the guy takes himself out of the play.

i think that we'll be okay. At least I hope so.

We didn't use 10 against Wisconsin. He IS an outside running guy.

We have upgraded IMO, just taking some time w/run blocking

This is what I think, too. When Galen Hall came in and implemented a new blocking scheme, it looked totally inept at first. But it was, what, less than two years before it was clicking and we won the B1G?

It's not about being outnumbered schematically (which seems to be the theme of many posters willing to bail out the OL), it's the fact that our guys up front are simply getting beat by their man. It's not like they are being double-teamed and can only choose one guy. So far, the interior is getting wrecked and not winning hat-on-hat....has nothing to do from that standpoint how many defenders are in the box. That matters more as to the reason why our RB's simply can't break a long run. But, if Miranda et al can't beat Nova's front, I don't know what to tell you. They are an FCS team....highly ranked or not.

Yea it helps when you have a generational back like Barkley that made up for a lot of ills from Moorehead and Limey.
It helps when you have an excellent back like Sanders.
I need more time to make an informed decision. I hate knee jerk reactions and there seems to be a lot of that around here.

That’s a valid point. When you’re not use to playing 3-4 defense OL usually struggle with picking up LBs. Guess we will find out this week.

Actually one of the issues was with not staying on those down linemen and too quickly trying to reach an lb. By the way Franklin was right on the money about the poor te blocking...I think they get away from that from here on in and limit their blocking, or at least get them help.

Preach it. Our QB has probably played 2 of the best back to back games in the air in terms of decisions, completion percentage, and production in a long time, but hey....let's throw that shade somewhere. I don't care if we throw 50 times a game if that is what they are giving us. It's not 1972 anymore and while you can run on teams and try to impose your will ala a Wisconsin, if your run game does get slowed down the more athletic teams will beat you.

well, we've only had four games under the current OC and two of them were against ranked opponents with some of the best defenses in college football. He also had this guy named Barkley who seemed like he was pretty, pretty, pretty good and a guy named Miles Sanders (who only got two carries last night averaging 13.5 YPC, WTF?)

The strangest thing: You can still win games even if you can't run...if you can stop the other team from running.
Another odd fact: Penn State beat both Wisconsin and Auburn even though both of those teams ran for over 100 yards.

These DC's were are playing against must be awfully stupid to keep putting 8- 9 men in the box when we have torched everyone we have played through the air.

The "in the box term" is getting rather trite in football, just like "leaving him on an island." Both are cute talking points by commentators during a game.

I see 4 down lineman and 3 LB's against whoever we play. If the safty's are "in the box" they must be doing it 30 yards downfield.

They are crashing down on the ends and pinching the middle to stop the inside run. For the umpteenth time, the book on Penn State, is make Clifford beat you, and 4 games in every team we played has done this....when defenses begin playing us honest, that's when running holes will appear...might happen this week, might not, but no matter how they play us, we have Mike Yurcich, and they don't.
