Regardless of rumors about Franklin looking around at other HC jobs, there is certainly a chance he might leave the program... especially if this season turns out to be a really good one.

What about Mike Yurcich as a possible replacement? Even if Franklin does stay for a few more seasons, I would think that MY would be a great young coach to consider for HC and Phil Trautwein might be a good OC candidate, even after such a short time in SC.

I think great schematic OC and DC coaches are better as coordinators. I’d prefer someone that is a people person and recruiter than a genius. I’m not saying the MY isn’t the people person and recruiter, but he seems more adept at scheme than motivator/recruiting.

I think the better the season goes and the higher the recruiting ranking gets, the less likely he is to leave. The closer we get to the playoff, the more unprecedented it becomes. I know people talked about Jimbo leaving FSU. I don't think that correlates to our situation.

But I'll say Urban to PSU.

EDIT: I have to admit, I really admire what Schiano appears to be doing at Rutgers, particularly in recruiting. Admittedly, he has a lot of catching up to do, but they just look like winners in the field.

You don't hire a coordinator to be head coach if you are a "destination job"
So is PSU a "destination job" or isn't it?

1. You call Matt Ruhle until you can no longer afford him to say no. You make sure he knows that he is #1, 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D.

If by the 5th no, your new list should include:

Fickell
Moorehead
And for the fun of it, maybe Urban

Your C list will be a collection of the normal Matt Campbell types.

Your D list is a list that makes very little sense, but might just work with the guy being in charge. A Joel Klatt type.

Why not Dabo Swinney?

I don’t think Yurcich is gonna stick around PSU. No basis for that statement just a weird vibe I have.
I agree. He's proven to be nomadic and will likely leverage this position into something larger or more lucrative.

My contribution to this thread... an entertaining article regarding Jimmy Johnson and Matt Rhule going fishing.

P.S. Matt isn't likely to come back to PSU. He seems to have moved on.

JF won't go.

But for the sake of discussion if he does go, first call is to Matt Rhule, second call is to Luke Fickell, I guess third call would be to Matt Campbell.
Can Rhule recruit?? Heard that's not his strong suit...

Am I the odd man out here?
3-0 start with wins over 2 ranked opponents, one on the road.
Current #1 recruiting class.
Many positives about the team.
And, we want to talk about who might replace the head coach who has made no indications he wants to leave Penn State.
I would rather we enjoy the current players, coaches and season. A man once said not to worry about things you cannot control.
And, no I don’t mind if you walk on my lawn!

So you think PSU should get into a bidding war with David Tepper? Penn State will lose.

I absolutely love Mike Yurcich and think he is going to do great things at PSU including attracting elite level QBs. But for some reason I don't view him as a head coach type of guy. Can't really explain why. With the success he has had surely he could have gotten a HC gig by now if he wanted one.
I expect CJF to be here for quite some time but one name I think would be very interesting, after he gets another 2-3 years of experience, is Tyler Bowen.

Catching up for lost time after not having to wonder where Joe was going most of eternity.

Why Moorehead, because he coached here? He hasn’t proven that he’s P5 HC material…

Well, his offense beat OSU in 2016 at penn state and his offense beat OSU in 2021 at Oregon. Considering our horrific track record against big brother, I'd think that might be noteworthy on anyone's resume, just not many with 2 wins against OSU on said resume.

I'd like someone who has run a program. Since when does being an OL coach, make you a creative offensive mind?

I'd go after someone who is a proven commodity as a HC......Fickel, Campbell, and I'd give an interview to Nardouche just to piss of Pitt and then of course just laugh.

He has a better chance to land as a OC in the NFL and then a HC there. NFL owners are in love with "innovative" offensive coaches.....they sell seats.

Guess I've listened to The Grateful Dead too much (Touch of Gray), but I keep hearing Franklin might be looking around and it puts a damper on an otherwise great season so far. Maybe speculating about it will somehow make me worry less about stability of our coaching staff.

For what it's worth, there would have been hundreds of posts like this through the years if we had had Message Boards during the Paterno years. ;)

I'm glad PSU has a coach that seemingly everyone wants. I could live with this speculation and achievement forever. If it's keeping you from enjoying the start or awake at night, I suggest meds:)
