Penn State's Next Head Coach

Am I the odd man out here?
3-0 start with wins over 2 ranked opponents, one on the road.
Current #1 recruiting class.
Many positives about the team.
And, we want to talk about who might replace the head coach who has made no indications he wants to leave Penn State.
I would rather we enjoy the current players, coaches and season. A man once said not to worry about things you cannot control.
And, no I don’t mind if you walk on my lawn!

Yep, worrying is like paying interest on a debt you might not owe

Wasn't really worrying, just speculating. Mike Yurcich is one of the more innovative young offensive coaches I've seen (I'm going by what he did at Oklahoma State and Texas plus one year at Ohio State) and I'd hate to see him jump ship after two seasons like the last two guys we had.

Remember, then-backfield coach Joe Paterno was going to leave until he was assured he would have a good shot at being next HC and so he stayed and ultimately got the job. If MY knows he has a possible future here he might not be looking around after the 2021 season ends.

What if -- bear with me here -- Saban decides he wants to go down in history as the only coach ever to win national championships at 3 different schools? He has said that at his age, he doesn't want to go anywhere where he has to build from the ground up, but that's not the case at Penn State. He just needs to beat Ohio State and get into the final four. One final challenge, and a chance for immortality.

Bruce Feldman has been drumming on about Franklin every time something opens up. It is a bit much.
It's weird because I have always got the impression he isn't a big fan of Penn State or Franklin in the past.
Guess I was wrong.

About at much as MY admittedly or Bill Obrien pre penn state or a host of coordinators soon to become head coaches
I'd say Yurcich is about as good a candidate at this point as most others. He could be another Bill Walsh (or even Galen Hall) for all anyone knows.

There is always the appeal of bringing in an older Urban Meyer-type, but they usually clean house (so we lose a lot of good assistants already on our staff) and may not hang around very long. The great thing about Franklin is he is/was a young coach looking to build something over time and do things "the Penn State way". There are only so many of such guys around.

How'd that work out for Scrap?

Fair enough. Of course, he was an above-average defensive coordinator who only ever coached/played at one school not an elite offensive innovator with over a decade of highly productive offenses on his resume.

If Paterno had retired in the early 90s, he might have considered Jim Caldwell as a candidate to be his successor... another very bright and innovative offensive coach who went on to be an elite coach/HC.

I hate Saban and all he stands for. That said, forgiveness is a gift the we give to ourselves. If he would be interested in a HC position at Penn State (god forbid that it comes open) then I’ll help him move.

I think the better the season goes and the higher the recruiting ranking gets, the less likely he is to leave. The closer we get to the playoff, the more unprecedented it becomes. I know people talked about Jimbo leaving FSU. I don't think that correlates to our situation.

But I'll say Urban to PSU.

EDIT: I have to admit, I really admire what Schiano appears to be doing at Rutgers, particularly in recruiting. Admittedly, he has a lot of catching up to do, but they just look like winners in the field.
I hope they are winners this week

Why Moorehead, because he coached here? He hasn’t proven that he’s P5 HC material…
I believe his type of offense can win here and recruit here. Remember, it isnt the easiest place to get kids to come to. Basically, I like his offense and am afraid if the wrong hire is made it could lead to some dark years.

Now you sound like Texas fans and who they think they can hire.

Moorhead is one of the two best offensive minds in the college game right now and nobody is better at adapting a scheme to the personnel on hand. But, I do not think he is a major college head coach.

You don't hire a coordinator to be head coach if you are a "destination job"
So is PSU a "destination job" or isn't it?
No but you do in this age of high movement to get a bigger salary. Yurcich was paid well to come here and an insurance policy if JF bolts.

and yeah…..I’d be calling Matt Rhule too .

Our season is a lot better than most thought. We have no idea how coaches are comfortable with staying put or wanting to move up in ranks.

MY seems the best fit since Jo Mo , but the rest of the season will dictate who moves or not moves.

Gut feeling CJF stays, MY gets a raise.

Regardless of rumors about Franklin looking around at other HC jobs, there is certainly a chance he might leave the program... especially if this season turns out to be a really good one.

What about Mike Yurcich as a possible replacement? Even if Franklin does stay for a few more seasons, I would think that MY would be a great young coach to consider for HC and Phil Trautwein might be a good OC candidate, even after such a short time in SC.
What is the point of this? I mean seriously.

Some serious delusion with Matt Rhule. Unless he fails miserably in Carolina, he isn't going from the NFL to PSU. Not a chance.
I'll second Matt Campbell. ISU has had some struggles, especially vs Iowa, but he is working with a talent deficit.
with the roster he's got in Carolina, he's not going to fail

Franklin is going nowhere while his daughters are in school. Too tough for teenagers to move and start over.

And I think Yurcich has found a home. He has moved often and is ready to stay put a while. Especially when he looks at incoming recruits and what they/he can do in the next few years. He has some Pa roots, has worked at several Pa. colleges. His wife has Pa roots also. Don’t know if they have kids but methinks he is here for a while. Hopes.........

I think you are understating Penn state as a brand and overstating the success of Mooreheads offense.

Does a copy of Franklin's binder stay?

Only you would be incapable of connecting the two following dots
  • a sportswriter who dislikes Penn State and would like nothing other than to see PSU suffer
  • a coach who has helped Penn State rebuild/regain national respect
I sometimes wonder how you’re able to survive on this orb.

My opinion here wasn't popular at the time, as I tend to call it the way I see it ... but I never liked Moorhead's offense, at least not what he did at PSU.

Some became Moorhead fans after the Donovan experience. That's understandable.

But Moorhead did not get the most out of a generational running back. Slow-developing, deep hand-offs and the same formation look over and over again. There were times when one defender could tackle both the QB and RB.

We were frequently saved by having NFL receivers that could grab the "jump ball," and a scrappy quarterback that could get them the ball. It was a system that works only if the team has the right QB, and one that can stay healthy after lots of contact.

Sorry, no thanks. I'll take Yurcich's creativity and common sense. He's more likely to preserve his QB and provide him the best chance at an NFL career.

Clifford's play last week says it all. Simplicity and clarity on top of variety that keeps the defense guessing. And we don't even have a dominating line for the running game yet.

Good things to come.
