pennlive.com 5-Part Series on PSU Wrestling this week

which lottery do you want the numbers for Roar? I have them all here, but don't want to give you bad info...
Well, ps'85...first you must make some wild, highly-speculative, conjectural, suppositional FACTUAL statement about events 3-years out in the ever-changing world of college wrestling. Then we can talk, lol.

Penn State
Ohio State (Only team even close to PSU in bonus points, but loss at 165 a problem)
Virginia Tech (All back but Brascetta)
Oklahoma State (Brock and Crutchmer return, but D-Ringer & Big Marsden gone)
Iowa (Not enough bonus points, might be higher if Bull goes)
Missouri (Sleeper, great dual team, could surprise at NCAA's)

Tan has two guys for three weights, where does he play the shell game? 165, 174, or 184?

I think the title comes down to this situation...he has a hole somewhere, what will he do?

People in the know say that 165 will be the weaker weight for them.

He knows he can't chase the points he's going to lose at 149 and 157, he is hoping for the same points at 125 and maybe a few more at Hwy, but he gets nothing from one of those three weights. He also can't be sure what he's getting at 133, not sold on Pletcher or the other kid as far as bona fide podium. 141 he'll probably get points. 197 is no more of a certainty than what we can say. Tan has a decision to make. I say they both stay where they're at and he rolls the dice at 184.

The brackets at 174 opened wide open for Martin last year.

I seriously doubt the 184 brackets this upcoming year will grant him similar luck. 184 is going to be stacked. (All the more reason for Nickal to maintain 174)

Not sure who the "people in the know" are. Haven't heard anything from TRyan.

The only info I can find on their line-up is here...

These folks are debating it both ways...time will tell.
Yes, that's the thread. Bob Preusse, who is an insider and as spot on as A2S, gave his take and that is good enough for me at this point. Things change, but Bob doesn't post info without knowledge. He's always the first to post new stuff, like White not coming to tOSU.

Yeah, I know his history...just cautious with insiders ;). Most I know aren't as publicly active, or they wouldn't remain "inside".

No matter how the lineup shakes out, whether it's plan A or B (and conceding differing valid opinions on what's A and what's B, or even C), it seems like a full lineup of AAs come March is a not-completely-nuts possibility. Things have to break right, especially at 197.

Interesting degree of frankness from Cael re Cassar's first surgery. Hopeful for Cassar's sake he's past the shoulder surgery phase of his career.

What was said re Cassar?

What was said re Cassar?
Cael said that Cassar got a much stronger repair with the second shoulder surgery and he's optimistic for a good result. Cael also noted that with Cassar's first surgery, he was a RS, and therefore the PSU medical staff wasn't involved in the process (I'm not exactly sure why that is true), with the implication being that he got better treatment this second time.

It's that he wasn't a PSU student, not an enrolled RS. The obvious inference here is AC isn't getting much $$, and as an out of state student it's pricey. His eligibility clock was ticking the same if he were enrolled or not.

I love it when that 'degree of frankness' comes out from Cael. He's only very rarely coy, most often forthright, but--like all coaches--occasionally leans in a little heavy with CoachSpeak (almost always warranted). But when that candor comes out so blunt, it's freakin awesome!

I remember feeling the same on Friday in March when someone asked him how this team stacked up against other (Taylor-Ruth) squads and he goes "I have no idea. We don't talk about past teams."

Bonus Inquiry: what degree of frankness you think Molinaro's newest young son will exhibit?

by the amount of hair he was born with, he has a high trajectory for frankness

50% frankness, 50% keraness ... though Magrum and Pucillo think the kid would have a brighter future if Stieber were the father.

Any word in ETA for return? No homily info plz

What we learned last year with Nevills, was that coming back with about a month left, is too late....that's basically my concern here.

valid.

I think those involved in the decision made the best choice with the information they had at that time. At the time it was the opinion of many that NN was needed to win the NC. In the end he wasnt and it cost him a potential 6th year.

I dont think we NEED the vraptor to win a championship this year. I hope he heals, feels great and contributes when all is right by him and the team. Stoudt will be a.o.k. in my opinion.

besides wining every dual 60-0 and every tournament by 100pts would not be all that fun. right?

Thanks, Mike. I was forgetting that he was hurt during his year off from PSU, not his RS year. Still, I would think coaches/med staff could give input, even if unofficial to a non-enrolled student athlete. Maybe rules forbid that, I don't know. Maybe he didn't have access to the medical options that he would have had being on the team, due to cost constraints.

Also, it's possible that NN was not interested in a a 6th year and took the decision out of Cael's hands.

Yes. Cael believes he will be ready. The 2nd surgery was like the one Navorro Bowman got. They put a strong piece in the shoulder so it stays in place. Bowman's never had any problems since playing LB in the NFL....

Hopefully Cassar gets the same kind of result as Bowman did!!

I always figured NN didn't want to extend his college career at the expense of his younger brother who will likely be the 285 guy when NN graduates. That and the fact he had been kept chomping at the bit long enough. I'm guessing if he is fully healthy we will see the guy he really is this year. Very few big guys can move like he did as a high school senior.

Yeah, there's an implication that he wasn't getting the best medical attention he otherwise would've been getting if he was enrolled I guess. You don't usually see coaches go there.

Kudos to Jim Carlson for a great series again. Cael is always a great interview but Jim's series covers a lot of territory and helps fill in a bunch of knowledge gaps about which we'd otherwise be speculating here.

When talking with Cael the straight forward candor is initially surprising but usually makes for an interesting conversation.

Yes he is. His entire family is awesome.

Jim is not only a great journalist, he's a great guy.

You can say that again. ;)
