Phil noted this morning that Julian Fleming has built a really strong relationship with Ryan Day at Ohio State and Fleming is super impressed with Day's offensive philosophy and system. So a first-time head coach was able to sell an offensive system to an in-state top recruit more effectively than all the coaches and experience at Penn State.

This is a big year for Franklin - his decision of elevating Rahne which enabled Gattis to leave, and most importantly, not going looking for an established offensive coordinator to replace Moorhead is really going to be tested this year. It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out.

So they should have elevated Gattis, who is also not an established offensive coordinator??

Fleming wants to leave Pa. He’s too diplomatic to say as much. Look at recent PSU WR production in the NFL and I’d say our offensive philosophy is just fine.

Or Franklin could have gone out and hired an established offensive coach. Still no guarantee that Fleming would have preferred a different coaching line-up at PSU to that of OSU, if that is, indeed, the case.

Remains to be seen if Day can still produce the same offensive magic while performing the additional responsibilities of head coach and/or that he can win as a head coach. It's not automatic.

So he wants to leave PA and go to....Ohio? That's fvcking brilliant.

Well, far enough to be somewhere new but not far enough so that it’s impossible for family to visit. Or do you think he’s sincere with his praise for the OSU offense and Day?

I've had a similar discussion with my family and we all agree, more or less, that once someone goes away to college, that person is away. Doesn't matter much whether it's 50 miles or 500 (unless you absolutely hate your parents).

There are certainly differences between Catawissa and State College. Between State College and Columbus? For a college student, yes, but not so much.

I'm not a fan of Rahne, so let's get that out of the way up front. My initial impression came from local HS coaches who've met him face to face. The product he put on the field last year reinforced that. Yes, I can see how someone might prefer to play in a 2018 OSU offense to a 2018 PSU offense. Of course, there are variables that contribute to that difference than simply the coaches. But I doubt that your average recruit is that analytical and a coach who has to explain it on that basis more often than not is going to lose the battle.

The issue last year was a qb who couldnt throw.

That will fix itself this season.

Penn State is an awesome skool with an incredible vibe. Way outclasses Da O$U. If he chooses for the latter, he can have it
No sure where I heard it but the NCAA is going to sanction OSU for the sex scandal. No bowl games, no penalty transfers (wait everyone has that now), 60 million dollar penalty, the head coach will be fired (wait he bailed before it could happen), on probation for BIG title (wait they can still play in the NCAA Invitational)., They’re taking down the Woody Hayes Statue (he had to know even if he was dead and are able to replace it with an Urbs Statue) Maybe I heard it on BIG Network, maybe ESPN nah, maybe not.

The biggest issue, IMO, is his relationship with Hartline. He hasn’t had a chance to build up his relationship with Butler to the same level of belief and trust.

if he is truly committing on May 31st then probably late for that relationship to bloom. it would seem our best shot would be to show it on the field in the fall.

Keep in mind the new OSU OC from Oklahoma State is viewed as one of the top offensive minds in college football. That's a strong selling point.

Yurcich is the passing game coordinator/QB coach. Kevin Wilson is the OC and Brian Hartline is the WR coach. How that all shakes out for Fleming I couldn't begin to tell you.

I’m not sold on Rahne but I’m also not sold on Gattis. What has he done to make people think he will be a good OC. They are both learning on the job at major programs

I'm sure there are multiple factors with Fleming.

But it's true, PSU has questions to answer about its offensive coaching after last season. This isn't the best time to be attracting wideouts because PSU's offense (and especially the passing O) was mediocre the minute Joe Moorhead, Charles Huff and Gattis left.

It's reasonable to expect things will be better this year but probably not reasonable to expect that it will look anything like a Moorhead offense again.

Ricky Rahne.... I dunno, I will try to keep an open mind. But seems to me Rahne's biggest contribution to the offense last year was vacating the TE coaching spot, allowing Tyler Bowen to come and coach Friermuth, who as a freshmen was the best player on the O last year. Which is a good thing because the TEs who had been coached by Rahne were not setting the world on fire.

Especially that Gesicki guy. What did he ever do?
Made me long for the days of the 5'11" Casey Williams and whomever coached him.

Rahne stumbles this year, it’s time to look at Brandon Streeter from Clemson. He is a Gettysburg graduate that played Qb at Clemson. He is there Qb coach also

Well said. If the kid wants to go to Columbus, Ohio than so be it. I’m sure CJF has done everything and then some to show love for Fleming, but he appears to be someone who wants to leave and not represent his home state university. We are beyond worrying about one recruit at this juncture. I’d rather him choose Clemson than Ohio State because of the associated negative drama, but we can’t be enamored with the potential loss of one kid at the expense of the progress & momentum of the student athletes who chose to play for Penn State.

I love the last 3 recruiting classes and this one may even be better, with or without Fleming and Bresee for that matter. We have the QB’s, OLine, RB’s, TE’s and WR talent to compete with OSU and Michigan going forward. We’ve played Ohio State evenly the past few years, so just need to continue the momentum.

WE ARE !

PSU isn’t the annual contender that elite recruits are knocking down the door to attend. It hasn’t been that program in quite a long time. We will get our fair share and compete for championships every few years.

If you’ve made yourself believe otherwise...well I’m sorry.

This is Chad Henne/Kevin Jones all over again. It stings but the program will go on

247 had Penn State as the #3 overall recruiting class for 2019. They had us at #6 overall for 2018. So neither of those classes had elite recruits? Interesting.

I agree that "PSU isn't the annual contender that elite recruits are knocking down the door to attend."

However, I strongly disagree that Michigan and Va Tech were "annual contenders" that lured Henne & Jones out of PA? Those 2 were and still are more "pretenders" than "contenders."

TM threw a bunch of great balls that were simply dropped. The WR play was atrocious.

TM also played hurt half the season.

That said, and not knowing then what I know now, I was calling for Tommy last year. I'm a little sad we aren't going to see what a healthy Tommy Stevens can do, but I agree that Clifford might be a special talent.

It's going to help to have an experienced WR coach on board. There's a ton of talent there.

As for Fleming, I'm very disappointed. But I don't think you can make too much over what one kid does in this game. I think he's going to be very good wherever he goes.

I’d take Brandon. So we are clear he is a Gettysburg HS grad who went and started at QB for Clemson. His Dad Barry, was the long time HC of Gettysburg college. From the Tuby Raymond school of coaching

I liked what I saw from Yurcich and Okie St offense than anything Kevin Wilson has cobbled together at either Indy or OSU.
I think Wilson is ok but is over hyped.

I would be very happy with him as well.

I’m pretty sure you are wrong on the second part. If we lose Fleming, Penn State Football is done within two years. The future of our university hinges on this decision.

What? No more onion dip for Fats?

Care to share what the HS coaches impressions were/are? TIA
