Phil Steele has PSU finishing 2023 as #6

I personally think Iowa could be (as opposed to is) the second best team in the conference behind Michigan. We have a better shot at knocking off OSU in C-Bus than beating Iowa at home. Their D is probably going to be second best to Michigan and their offense, while not world beaters, will be dramatically better. This could be the best Iowa team since 09 and maybe 02. Come December, I would be mildly surprised if Cade McNamara isn't 1st or 2nd team all Big Ten. Erick All was a top two tight end in the Big Ten for Michigan last year and is probably second best on this Iowa team. They will play complimentary football, punt and win a lot of games.
Reminder - Cade McNamara has exactly 0 snaps as Iowa QB. Who exactly did Iowa beat last year - stumbling PU, Minny without a QB (vaunted D got rolled for 263 rushing yards), a rudderless WI, UK without Levis? They lost to Neb at home with title on line. Sorry, I am not seeing fear here. Completely stomped by 44 vs OSU. They have good lines and well-coached. Anything can happen but game at Beav where PSU has great D returning and 5 star weapons on O?? Cmon now..

Iowa needs turnovers and a rock fight to be successful. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not something you fear as a fan.

McNamara and All are also post injury. While McNamara was good at Michigan, there is no guarantee he is even 50% successful with Iowa's offensive depth chart. Bringing in All is good for familiarity, but TE is not where Iowa needed an upgrade in talent.

Iowa is not beating PSU at PSU. I would be far more concerned with Illinois (at Illinois) the week before. Everybody is making a big deal about the Iowa offensive transfers and acting like they're going to be all-world at Iowa. That's a joke. Brian Ferentz is still OC. There's a reason that they were backups and some didn't play (that ex OSU receiver). PSU will curb stomp them

I agree on IL. Brett is a great strategist as we learned several years ago. Still, Chase Brown was a beast and without him then there is some serious punch lost. Breaking in new QB too. They also lost D Co and much in secondary. Front looks strong. This is a game where Drew will have to prove himself early. Gloves are officially off with MY. You got your hand-picked star QB recruit, 1 year of playing time and 2 pre-seasons under belt. Time to shine.

That's comical. The thing to remember this time of year is that all of these articles by the so-called experts are nothing more than click bait.

It was on his podcast. Outside of osu/um he considers Illinois and Maryland really difficult games along with msu if they’re fighting for bowl eligibility or seeding.

I agree with him.

I went through PSU, OSU and Michigan's schedules and there are 2 road games for those 3 teams that stand out.

The 1st is PSU's Illinois game at Illinois, Yes, PSU should be favored and win that game. I actually consider Illinois to be more difficult than Iowa in Happy Valley even though Iowa is getting all of the preseason love over their transfers. Ilinois is really solid up front on both sides of the ball - a Beliema trait

The 2nd - and really scary - is OSU travelling to Madison to take on Wisky. Not sure about the time, but something tells me this will be switched to a night game and those crazies up in Madison should be intoxicated and LOUD by the time the game rolls around.

Didn't really see any hard crossover games for Michigan with - maybe - going into Lincoln to play Nebraska but the Cornhuskers have really underperformed over the last 5 years or so. Waiting to see what Rhule can do with them

I just watched replay of IA-MN. IA had no business winning that outside of luck. They got absolutely trucked by Gophers. The MN backup QB only had 87 yards passing. They knew Mo Ibrahim was coming and could not stop him. 263 yards..my god. Lets see - MN misses chip FG in 1st. Score was 10-10 with 2m to play. MN marches to thirty and kids throws pass which deflects to IA LB who runs it back into Gopher territory (clip called on return). IA moves ball to 3 yard line and gets stuff on 3rd and 1 but it appears might be a fumble. Review worthy but refs biew whistle and MN starts running with ball. IA kicks FG and wins. Lucky over good. That D was pathetic.

ILL lost most of their defensive secondary as well as starting a new QB. While our big question mark will be Allar, they have the same issue. The kid xfers in from Ole Miss and has very little experience.

Kids can be flakey. This is especially true in the first away game when travel and unfamiliar facilities make it unsettling. the game will be sold out but ILL doesn't have a great fan base (actually went down last year after BB's first season as HC). They only had one game over 50k (in a 60k stadium) and that was versus Sparty (56k). I'll bet Sparty had 10,000 of those 56,000 seats.

both teams will try to establish a run game. ILL lost their RB while PSU returns both 1 and 2. But PSU's superior secondary should hold over ILLs rebuilt secondary.

If we don't turn the ball over, we win easily.

Not that 2021 means that much to 2023, but Iowa at home barely could beat a PSU team that had to play without its starting qb for over half the game and was getting blown out before that starting qb left the game. Moreover, other than the game that was played during the ridiculous 2020 season, PSU has beaten Iowa regularly under Franklin; if coached properly, PSU should have too much athleticism on the field for Iowa to handle. Also, in recent seasons, Iowa's o-line, which had been a traditional strength under Ferentz, has declined dramatically; I just can't see them scoring many points against PSU in a night game at Beaver Stadium.

Agree. Iowa plays like the old PSU teams: apply pressure and wait for a mistake. PSU will need to play patient, clean football. Iowa wins off of turnovers. They'll have a much better QB this season but it feels like their D scored as many points as their offense did last year.

Iowa is a good, well-coached football team. This is probably our third most difficult game behind tOSU and UM. I feel good since it is a home game.

We lost more than our starting QB. We had a kid come in that couldn't even hand the ball off without issues or get the snap. It took a complete catastrophe to lose that. Hopefully Franklin has learned and I guarantee Pribula isn't the same drop off.

I think at MD, IL, MSU could have a trap game in there. IA will be strong up front but Chop will be monster off edge. We have not had talent like that in some time. Cade will have to get it out quick. Game at Beaver stadium. Seeing what MN did to them in run game with zero passing attack, it makes me feel better that our balance will put this one away in second.

I am not 100% sure Chop is our best DE. Isaac is going to be much better than last year when he was finally healthy but he now has more confidence in that now and DDS was a beast off the bench last year as a true freshman but is now bigger, stronger, and faster. It may be a race to the QB/RB in the backfield.

Agree. As every down DE, Chop may not be containment type yet. In the close losses over years, we just could not get to QB. Chop flips the script. He is closest to Chase Young power and speed that PSU has brought in a long time. With aggressive style of play, he will be tough to stop on 3rd down.

Unless we beat them, then you will be saying they were overrated and they’re in the West, so they really suck.

Iowa is similar to the later JoePa years. If you hang 17 points on them, you win. Everyone knows their offense is inept and will continue to be while under the coaching of Kirk Ferentz.

I would think PSU is a value bet there. Texas and FSU on the other hand seem to be very poor bets. Although I don't do sports betting so?
Texas is consistently ranked high in these preseason national title odds. I suspect it's because their fans are eager to place wagers and Vegas is happy to take their money.

Right. But nobody knows until he does it. And, of course, in college football, lots of college kids will get challenged for their first time.

I live in Ohio. I know lots of families who's kid played with and against Allar. And, I should add, he often played against private schools that had a lot more talent than his Bees had. What most of them said was that Allar was most dangerous when extending plays. He isn't all that mobile but he is elusive and knows how to move in the pocket or roll out. His arm strength is top notch and he can throw a rope while moving left or right. So he would often complete a long pass after being flushed from the pocket and making an accurate throw on the run. At 6-6 or whatever, that is pretty special.

This staff hasn't had a QB like him before. It will be interesting to watch and see how they grow together. But, as you said, he'll make mistakes.
That sounds a lot like another big QB from Ohio that worked out pretty well in Pittsburgh, especially the escaping the pocket and then making big plays part.

I think DDS could be the best player on the entire team this year, if not next. He brings an element to the position we haven't had since Gross-Matos.
