Phillies Sign Jake Arrieta to Deal...(OT)

Three years.....so probably half a billion dollars or so. All these salaries are so fudging ridiculous and keep getting more and more ridiculous.

perfect signing....zero downside

phils needed a veteran professional on the staff...will not affect their ability to go after big time free agents in any way...

In MLB, there is no restriction on signing free agents if the team is willing to pay the salary, resultant luxury tax (if any), and give up a compensatory draft pick (if the situation dictates). At this stage, there are no "big time free agents" left.

I think he means in the future as far as not being tied up. The Phillies are loaded with money.

They will give up a 3rd round draft pick.

correct....next two years big time free agents are available, as the phils young talent is becoming a force.

75 Million worth of potential downside....
Obviously, if he pitches like he did in 15/16 it’s worth it.

Are the Phillies that close to contending? I really don’t know.
But you’re talking about a 32 year old (signing till he’s 35) who’s numbers have taken a downturn (granted, the downturn has been from “dominant” to still “above average”)
Over the last two years, per nine innings:
Hits: From 5.9 to 8.0
HR: From 0.4 to 1.2
Ks: From 9.3 to 8.7
BBs: From 1.9 to 2.9
Fastball: From 94+ to 92

With the way this year’s FA market has gone.... JA (and Scott Boras) have to be breathing a sigh of relief.
Boras in particular, since he’s already cost at least one client over 10,000,000 for 2018 (by not taking the QO). Not the first time Boras’ arrogance has cost his client huge cash.

WRT Arrieta, a fly ball pitcher pitching in that Cigar Box Stadium in Philly....... IDK.
Wrigley - for all the “tradition” that its a hitters park, really isn’t (the wind blows in as much as it blows out)

Phillies have what’s shaping up to be a pretty solid young core. They needed pitching badly and this is a good signing. I would consider this akin to them signing Thome right before they started crushing the NL east. This was done to attract the likes of Harper or Machado imo

Machado for sure. In 2 years Trout as well. The guy was a huge Phillies fan growing up and he is obviously an Eagles fanatic. I think he ends up back near his home.

44 million dollar payroll, this adds to it and it is still minuscule, great signing for a variety of reasons
