Phils' Cole Hamels thru 5, doing something to watch ...

Not to be forgotten or lost in Hamels no hitter is that Chooch Ruiz now ties Jason Vairtek as catching 4 no hitters, the most by a catcher.
1. Halladay vs Marlins 2010
2. Halladay vs. Reds NLDS Game 1 2010
3. Combo no hitter with Hamels, Diekman, Giles & Papelbon vs. Braves last September.
4. Hamels today vs. Cubs.

I recall Doc buying Chooch a big, high-end watch after his perfect game. That's why I said Hamels should flip a little tip to Herrera, for the catch in the 8th, not the 9th! j/k

I didn't post about it but my wife and son and I went down to the businessman's special on Wednesday. Herrera was one game removed from not getting out of the box on a grounder and catching hell from the fans and Philly papers. He won that one against the Rays in the 10th. My kid is 12 and a huge Phils fan. He's nobody's athlete but he caught a foul ball on the fly at the game, got a big hand from the crowd (he brought his glove) and it was kids run the bases day afterward. I don't care how bad the team is, he watched the end of this with me and Wednesday was a day he will never forget. I feel like a kid again. I have a screenshot somebody sent me from the game but it's not on the net so I don't know how to post it. Good enough, fine with me. I won't forget it either.
Nice story. My oldest son got to play at Citizens Bank Park as a member of the Chester County Carpenter Cup team. Actually it was 3 times over 2 years. Second year they actually won the cup. Memories that will make me smile for the rest of my life. It was pretty cool to see his name on the scoreboard in the lineup.

I am back down to 245 BMP. Unreal. If he is sent off, talk about going off with a bang. What a display. So awesome. Love Cole Hamels.

He's like Lefty in some respects; won despite poor run support in Phila and had top notch stuff. Like Carlton he was poorly received for some of his comments over the years. Carlton shut up and so did Hamels in some ways. Maybe I'm in the minority but I hold nothing against Jimmy, Werth, Lidge, Burrell or anyone who left. You wear the ring and that's fine with me. You're a winner, barring doing something truly egregious, like criminal stuff not contract gripes. I would never boo a Werth or Rollins, for example. Shane either. 'Course I'm not booing anybody anyway.

That would almost be Rick Wise-esque. Almost. That was one for the ages in terms of both on the mound and at the plate.

Oddly enough I got Rick Wise's autograph at the old Fidelity bank in Warminster within a week of that game (can't remember if it was before of after). No idea what he was doing in there.... The teller told me who he was. Still have it too.

I guess it worked out better than when the Phils sent Adolfo Phillips and some reliever named Fergie Jenkins to the Cubs for Larry Jackson and Bob Buhl. :)

Got to see Fergie at the All Star game fan fest (he had a booth for his foundation), though we ended up talking more with Art Shamsky of the 69 Mets and George Foster (he had a trivia question for us--name the 5 Georges on the 1977 Reds). And I wore my full Phils uni to the game (though none of the items match, exactly).

IF I recall correctly, Rick Wise won his first MLB game on the same day Jim Bunning threw a perfect game against the Mets.

Hot humid afternoon in Chicagoland.....glad the Phils CF didn't screw it up, though he certainly tried.

Speaking of explaining things...no matter how old you are you can spot things in a game you never saw before. I wish I was this smart with football, which I in nowise am....

To wit:

Howard shift on Wednesday. Tampa took the 2B and put him at the SS position and played the regular 3B up the middle with the SS. Flipped them for the shift. Why did they do that? I don't know enough about TB to answer that. Maybe the 2B had better range to his right than the 3B had and could cover the 3B line better on the miracle chance that Howard went the other way with one? I don't know. Did I notice this? NO. The two older people behind me did. They were asking each other why and nobody had an answer. Thinking I know a bit about baseball I was all set to turn around and say something but I had zilch. Somebody here must know.

If the CF had missed the ball it would have been an error, not a hit. However, home cooking could have ruled it the other way...glad we didn't need to find out...

Tom, thanks for the heads up. I got the game on in the sixth and loved watching...I'm a life-long Phillie fan and started out attending games with my father at Connie Mack. My buddies and I would catch the Reading line in either Penndel or Langhorne to the Reading Terminal then jump on the subway down to Veterans stadium. $5.00 would get us travel both directions, a seat in the 700 section and a drink and snack. Oh the good ol days. BTW, we'd thumb-it to and back from the train station and never had an issue.

I continued to attend games with my father but he would always purchase better seats than the 700 level.

I think he is going but that game was sort of closure. We still have Howard and Utley from the great years but Hamels is still very good. I hope the trade works well for both sides.

Booing Werth or Shane would be insane. Rollins is probably my favorite player ever. It was one great ride. The Nationals blew away any other offer for Werth.

Don't forget Ruiz. One guy I wish they kept around another year was Ibanez. I know he was very popular too and that's the way it goes but if I could have my way I would want a Phillies 09 WS ring with Ibanez' name on it. He fit in down there and was well liked by all.

I feel bad for even not saying his name. He was a rock behind the plate the entire time. Ibanez was awesome. My favorite moment through it all might have been Stairs shot against the Dodgers and this one...yeah this wins.

For Tom. Perhaps the final image of Hamels as a Phillie for us fans of the Fightins'

Yeah, the Phillies are having a disastrous season and for one game you still you get a kick out of being a fan.
Sounds like golf. You can be a duffer like me but those one or two good shots per round keep you coming back for more.
