Some thoughts on the AA finals:
- OW of the tourney should be Hoffman.
- Most impressive finals: 152 Thayne Lawrence (SO), dismantled returning champ Justin McCoy (UVa commit)
- Best runner-up: 170 Robbie Patrick
- Best freshman: 106 Gary Steen
- Ugliest: tie between 182 Julian Gorring with his Kid N Play high top fade with a blonde top; and HWT Danny Scheib with a half mullet, half mohawk + mustache that made him look like Serial Killer Dave Wannstadt.
For the actual matches:
106 - Steen 5, DeMark 2: Steen scored on a 1st period duck, and in the 2nd on a DeMark shot when he countered with an ankle pass, rolled fwd, bridged out, and back doored his way into the takedown.
Steen is a FR, PJW finalist last year, and multiple national youth freestyle medalist. Someone to watch.
113 - Boozel 7, McMillen 3: Boozel led 4-0 after 1, on a single + NF2 on the scramble. Escape in the 2nd. McMillen scored a counter go-behind T2 in the 3rd.
McMillan's 4 losses this year are all to Boozel. They're both pretty good but probably not national AA candidates.
120 - Lane 3, Shields 2: Lane scored on a duck in the first and made it count. Good match with great flurries in both the 2nd and 3rd periods.
IMO Lane will be a competent starter at Lehigh, but needs to add weight (and Matt Parker moving up would help his case). Shields improved from last year.
126 - Teasdale 2, Jones 0: See Teasdale thread for my thoughts.
132 - Klock 4, Rhone 3: This was an ugly match -- Klock entered the match with a cut, it busted open 10 sec in, and there were approximately 50 blood stoppages.
Rhone made 2 mistakes that cost him the title -- first he got off balance and got shrugged for a first period takedown. Then in the 3rd, Klock blocked him from throwing in legs, but he tried to ride up Klock's back anyway and got dumped off (luckily only for an escape). Rhone did get a reversal in the 2nd.
,
Both of these guys are lower division wrestlers if they choose to continue in college.
138 - Matthews 5, Dowling 2. Matthews scored early with a good snap and go-behind, and late with an ankle shot off a shrug. And he smothered Dowling on top with a tough leg ride.
Matthews could be a good starter, though he's going to Pitt. Dowling is a SO, could be someone to watch.
145 - Haubert 9, Myers 3: Haubert was noticeably stronger and ragdolled Myers. Not a very technical match.
152 - Lawrence 8, McCoy 1: Lawrence led 2-0 after 1 -- McCoy shrugged and dropped to a single, and on the scramble Lawrence ended up with a turk; McCoy was lucky to not give up swipes. Lawrence scored on his own shot in the 2nd and got NF2 when McCoy held onto the scramble too long. Lawrence got a 3rd period reversal when McCoy tried a desperation assassin headlock from top.
McCoy didn't wrestle all that badly. Lawrence was just better from all 3 positions.
Lawrence is just a SO and IMO would beat both AAA finalists as well. Definitely someone to watch. If Starocci falls through and Lawrence grows, he wouldn't be a bad backup plan.
160 - Clymer 8, Kallenborn 0: Clymer was both better and wanted it more. Scored on a HC lift and hard takedown in the first, a standing switch in the 2nd, and then a high double, lift, and hard takedown to the back for 4 at the final buzzer (and was real close to the pin, except the ref didn't bother to get down on the mat because it was so close to the end of the match).
Clymer is a SR, down to Maryland and Bloomsburg. I kinda hope he picks Bloomsburg, because I think he could be decent in that league but get crushed in the B10.
170 - Ruth 6, Patrick 4. FAR better mach than last year's 3-1 SV snorefest. In fact, the match lived up to the hype.
Patrick scored in the first on a single. He almost scored again at the end of the first on a shrug and drop to a leg, but ran out of time. Ruth scored in the 2nd on a blast double and an underhook to single.
Patrick hit a jaw dropping foot sweep with 5 sec left, got Ruth on his side on the mat, would've scored T2 (and possibly swipes) on almost anybody else. Ruth somehow squired out of that with no damage to preserve the win.
Patrick will attend Virginia next year. Ruth ... he's still an enigma. He's clearly improved over last year. But he still needs technique work. He could be very good for somebody in college, but I'm glad we got Brooks.
182 - Mulligan 5, Gorring 3: Hated this match. Mulligan wrestled well and deserved to win. Not his fault. Gorring is a stallmeister and I wouldn't mind not seeing him again. As the announcers put it: Gorring played defense for 6:50 vs. Garcia and somehow never got called for stalling.
Mulligan is headed to Edinboro and IMO will be a decent starter. Gorring is forgettable.
195 - Hoffman 18, Dull 3, TF 3:24: See Bambi vs. Godzilla.
220 - Walters 16, DeLuca 8: Walters scored at will on feet. Nice pickup for Drexel. DeLuca was game but outgunned.
285 - Scheib 3, McCoy 2: Scheib won with a good 2nd period shrug into a snatch single. Typical HWT match. Scheib is well built, athletic, good technique. McCoy is a doughboy.
Scheib is headed to East Stroudsburg next year. Hopefully McCoy is headed to Weight Watchers. He's a JR and will probably be the favorite next year.
