Pitt hoops finishes ACC regular season at 0-18

Sad, really. "Dumpster fire" was being kind.
In Philadelphia, at least, they know how to have fun with a Dumpster

They've gone from a fairly good basketball school into a total athletic dumpster fire

For those that know CBB, what has led to this? It wasn't that long ago that Pitt was a very good CBB program.

The other night against Virginia, they scored a total of 7 points the entire first half. Only one filed goal for two points. Rest came on foul shots. Thats about as bad as I have ever seen.

Their since-departed athletic director hired a coach in Kevin Stallings who has managed to be both a terrible fit from the beginning and also underachieve in every area. Stallings inherited a team that returned four starters from an NCAA tournament qualifier and has proceeded to win something like 4 conference games in two years.

I really didn't think it was possible for a coaching hire anywhere to gut an established program as quickly as Stallings has done there. He's almost certainly going to get canned, though, so I'm curious to see whether they bring in someone who can reestablish Pitt's presence in the Philly/NYC recruiting territories that Jamie Dixon always did pretty well in. Pitt isn't in the Big East anymore, but Syracuse (and Penn State) have shown that you can recruit from those areas representing other conferences.

One of Pitt's players had transferred to Pitt to get away from Stallings at Vandy. Six Pitt players transferred out after he came to Pitt and their best remaining player had a broken foot this year.(Edit; IIRC He also suspended two players last year for disciplinary reasons)

Stallings is toast. New AD hinted at that earlier this week.

And we thought Narduzzi sucked. Pitt BB makes Pitt Football look competent. Is there any collegiate sport that Pitt is reasonably competent? This nightmare in sports is exactly what those hateful, envious, jealous, and low-life Pitt fans deserve. Richly deserve.

They had a pretty decent baseball team last year, and their women's volleyball team won the ACC, and gave us a pretty tough battle at Rec Hall in the Tournament. Other than that, THEY SUCK!

Here's a good example of how dillusional Pitt fans are. I recently heard a call on a Pittsburgh talk show, and the caller said " there is no reason Pitt can't be a Top 5 wrestling program every year". Pitt fans are CLUELESS!

Do Pitt fans want Sean Miller? I think Pitt would want him, warts and all, because of how much an embarrassment this season was.

I would echo what Raffycorn said above. Stallings isn't really that good of a coach to begin with. Then you have all of the player turnover that occurred when he showed up, the loss of Cam Johnson to transfer, the loss of Luther Ellis to injury this year, and a roster full of overmatched underclassmen, you get this mess. Those that gave Dixon a reason to run to Ft. Worth should be damned to careers of organizing 5K races and canned food drives because they shouldn't be working in athletics.

If a pretty decent baseball team = a 23-30 record, 9-21 in ACC and one of the two teams not to make the ACC tournament, then yeah they had a pretty decent baseball team.

Gotta believe that Dixon realized Pitt was not a good fit for the ACC, and that he'd be beating his head against the wall trying to compete with the basketball powers there. In the Big East, Pitt recruited well in the NYC area, where those players would play a number of games in metro NY and other areas of the Northeast. Other than Western PA, which has produced some players, Pitt basketball now doesn't have a natural recruiting area. Getting the program back to respectable is going to be a huge task for somebody.

IIRC, Pitt has *never* won a NCAA title. They have some individual titles but no official team titles.

Of note: Penn State has produced its fair number of clunker seasons in conference play - including the 1 win season in 2004-2005 - but Penn State has *never* gone winless in conference play.

Well truthfully, if they recruited PA better they could be top 10 just on PA talent. This is one of the top couple states, if not #1, for wrestling. Of course, that wont happen because even PSAC schools do a better job of recruiting that Pitt

Fair, this was a train wreck just waiting to happen. I and several others I know dropped our hoops tickets when our inept Administration let our even more inept AD hire this coach. Now, he didn't have a lot to work with and Dixon's recruiting his last three years was sub par but no one expected 0-18. Do you know how hard that is to not win a conference game. I get being young but the last 10 or so games weren't even close. Total train wreck

Do you and your ilk advocate not playing us in basketball anymore? To be consistent with your post yesterday, this should be the stance you take. Or since we aren't all that good in basketball, can we assume that you're OK with future games being scheduled? I look forward to your rationalizing reply.

Actually, right now I would say you are the better program in both sports. I just responded to your comment about not playing. Quite frankly I really don't care either way. As I stated, I don't like the ugliness brought about. I hope you guys do make the tourney. The only sport I would like to see us continue is wrestling. I happen to be a former wrestler and enjoy and root for you guys. I think it would be great for the state for us to wrestle every year. That is the only sport I would really care about signing up for

I agree here, Pitt might be in bigger trouble than just a bad coach who killed the program. Dixon had a very nice pipeline to NYC and could fill in with a few other players. Playing in the old Big East (before it splintered to what it is now) really was an advantage as that was a great BBall conference and high profile in the major metro's of NYC, Philly, to DC. ACC is mainly a southern conference. Good BBall conference obviously, but guys from the big eastern cities are not seeing Pitt play really much of ever nor is the draw their to play in the major conference the Big East used to be. And with where the program is now, they are completely off the map. Next coach is going to have a really long haul rebuild to get Pitt back to respectability and they are going to have to throw some top dollar to get a coach that can even do that.
