Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic

PA MOW Scott Joll second in Belle Vernon History to Aaron Olszewski in 2001. I have to represent my hometown here guys, Joll is our 6th D1 guy in 4 years Nate Russo, Mitch Hartman, Austin Bell, Jarod Verk, Zach Hartman, and Scott Joll. Now we have 6 varsity wrestlers ... go figure

Starocci seems really raw to me, but with a ton of upside. I'm looking forward to seeing what Cael and his staff can guide him to.

"Really raw"?!?!? How so? He's a 2x PA AAA champ and a double Fargo champ. That's pretty rarified air for a high school wrestler. Perhaps he's raw compared to PSU's current stable of upperweights. But, compared to them, what high school kid isn't?

Some kids as seniors looked like finished products with not much upside.

Not to speak for matter but I see the same thing he did. As great as Starroci is now, I can see him light years better come college. Similar to Bo in HS. You knew he had all the talent in the world and had a lot more upside than let’s say a Chance M who is great but hasn’t shown a big jump in college.

It’s a compliment

The one point scored by the future Hawkeye seems about right. Was anyone in the crowd yelling for stalling during the match?
Of course Assad had him in danger rule per HR and would have won in college.

And Starocci had an advantage in fitness since his season just ended.

You know the drill. Starocci is not as highly ranked as Assad so this will be a test of Cael’s coaching ;)

This ^ It's really not a knock; it's a compliment. I think the Starocci we see now will be eclipsed by the one we'll see at the end of his PSU career.

I don’t know if it’s the fact he doesn’t have the prototypical wrestlers “look” or what, but He is must see viewing anytime he wrestles. Wish he was coming to PSU

I love Ryan Anderson. He is FUN! Plus, he reminds me of my friend from HS who was around the same weight class. My HS coach called him a "wet seal" one time. But the kid could wrestle and got 4th in AAA as a senior. It was clinched when I saw Anderson hit a barrel roll - that was my friend's go to takedown.

Just Vodka doing Vodka things...

Although I will really, really enjoy this year's NCAAs - my guy's first trip, PSU blasting the field for their 8th out of 9 - part of me just can't wait for #2020 when Vodka's head truly does explode, instead of just threatening to. The guy has become the figurehead of the new HR.

Regarding Anderson and his commitment to ISU, someone posted this on HR:

"See if he sticks or if Dresser needs to hire his dad to keep him. He wants PSU but they aren't offering him. Yet. If they do, he is gone."

Every time I see Ryan Anderson wrestle, aside from really enjoying watching, I think John Smith must be thinking "Damn, he would've slid in nicely at 126 after Picc is done". Let's just say he's gotta be a favorite for those of us who will never see a 6 pack again unless it's in a cooler.

someone on the HR report indicated he is PSUs if Cael makes an offer...

We were at Hershey for the semi's & Anderson was warmed up & about to head to the arena floor for his match. He picks up his backpack, pulls out a Coke & downs about 1/3 of it. Coke goes back in the backpack, he heads to the table to check-in & then proceeds to dominate the match. Now as much as I like Anderson, what am I supposed to tell the kids I coach? I tell them stay away from soda, sugar, etc. Now they all think they need to drink Coke before they wrestle. o_O I am a Ryan Anderson fan though, regardless of his undermining my coaching.:p

You can tell them they can drink a Coke before the match when they're ranked #1 in the nation.

But, but, but, but ahmmmmm Cassar and Rasheed don't count you know because they were really, really, much better out of high school then given credit for.

Old school. They gave my college football team Coca Cola at halftime. Of course, they also fed us steak as a pregame meal. Lol.

He is the leader of the alt-HR?? Or is it resistance-HR?

Has a certain flair I could get behind :po_O:oops:

Must be “HR talk”. The kids already signed to ISU

M* does so many unethical things on the recruiting trail they must expect that is what all coaches use as procedure. According to HR ISU offered #97 recruit Gabe Christiansen a big offer when that couldn't be less factually accurate. It is hard to imagine a fan base lobbing rocks at Cael without the slightest hint of how the "great recruiting specialist" M* spends his day well outside the lines. I hope the NCAA quits turning a blind eye to the shenanigans going on over in Iowa City.

them boobird folks are wore out. they are bullies and intimidate the refs. it really is harassment. they need to shut up and stop being idiot fans of the sport. it starts with the tiny twins. dan gable wouldn't put up with that mentality. ohhh well, the twins might be gone next year.

Please ..... go on.

We have all day to listen.

Any concern that holding 174 for more than one season for Starocci would be just too difficult?

A redshirt year for Starocci with great experience training in the room, and step in at 174 after Mark Hall finishes up.

Sounds ideal, but these things don't always go as expected.
In 2021, expect to see
Teske rSo
RBY Jr or Howard Fr
NLee Sr
Verklereen rJr
Berge rJr
Manville rJr or JLee rFr
Starocci rFr
Brooks So
Beard So
SNevills rFr

Would love to hear more about how unethical M* is as this is something I haven't even heard rumblings of.

Also, Starocci is going to be a stud. Where do you guys think him and Brooks line up weight wise? Seems like Brooks is destined for 184 but I am also terrible at prognosticating future weights.

HR posters constantly complain about the PSU Slush Fund and think it’s the only way Cael could possibly
get so many top P4P wrestlers at once. I’ve read where many former Hawkeye greats ( Royce Alger, Steiner brothers off the top of my head) took a fraction of the full scholarship offers they were offered elsewhere, just to have a chance to wrestle for Gable and Iowa. But they refuse to believe great kids come to Penn State for the same reason. The delusion and hatred of some makes HR unreadable.

Starocci looks pretty thick but also a little on the short side. Matt Brown was incredibly muscular and held 174 through college. I think his height, or lack thereof, helped him.

Starocci 174, Brooks 184, Beard 197.

Carter knew this was the plan when he committed and is disciplined, so we can view this year as him wrestling up a weight for the challenge.

It’ll be interesting to see how that turns out. I’ve always felt wrestlers (PSU in particular) do better when they are allowed to grow naturally. I don’t doubt Starocci gets it done at 74 but will be interested to see if it’s a forced weight or because it’s a fit.

With Donovan Ball a developmental wrestler at 184/197. Not a bad guy to have in reserve -- a 3-sport athlete in HS (football and baseball in addition to wrestling) who is strong and aggressive, and was a PIAA AAA finalist in a very tough weight class.
