PJ Fleck signs 7 year deal with Minnesota

Fleck is a good coach. The west being better than it has been is good for the B1G. The B1G east has been a top two division in CFB for a while now while the west has been very underwhelming outside of Wisconsin and at times Iowa. Good for Minnesota.

How is the west better than it has been previously?

Good for him and glad that Minny is able to keep the coach they want. He’s too cheesy for my liking but it’s a win-win for them.

Reading the tea leaves here I'm guessing he's not very confident that his team will beat Penn State, making signing now while unbeaten a priority.
Possibly signing before losing 3 of the next 4 games

Yep

The teams in the West right now are probably as bad right now as they have ever been - as a group (which has a lot to do with why UMinn is 8-0.... but I don't want to denigrate what they have done, which is commendable none the less).
The only decent team in the West is Wisconsin and maybe Minnesota and possibly Iowa - not sold on them as their offense sucks and have a statue at QB. I guess we'll find out about Minny on Saturday. My prediction PSU 34, Minnesota 17.

He is cheesy for sure but all in all good for college football. His timing couldn't be better, all his tough games remain [they could easily lose 3 of last 4].

I would think a complex contract negotiation like that is something that would have been in the works awhile. Possibly he did try to speed it up some though in case he takes the L Saturday.
He probably just had more time to deal with it given the off week. I doubt if one game makes any difference. It shouldn’t.

He didn't say the west is better than it was previously. He said "The west being better than it has been is good for the B1G". I think his point is, Fleck is making Minny better. Minny being better makes the west better, which is good for the B1G.
The "west" is like 5 years old. He said the west is better than it has been - which, given a 5 year history, would mean "better than ever". That's not close to accurate imo.

The west is awful this year:

Illinois - awful, although a little better than usual
Purdue - with the injuries they are just a bad team
Northwestern - 1 win, Fitzpatrick having a bad year
Nebraska - so bad
Iowa - can't score
Wisconsin - good team, but couldn't close the deal

Then the east crossover includes Rutgers and Maryland. They don't plan OSU or UM or a below average MSU team.

Out of conference he played Ga Tech (lost to Citadel) and Fresno State (won by 3 on the road).

PSU gets Iowa (road), MN (road), and awful Purdue as the crossover games. Plus OSU, MSU, UM - the Big Ten schedules are ridiculously uneven.

I will bet you 100 , gophers aren't losing 3 of next 4. They aren't losing against northwestern. Wisconsin still has no passing game opponents needs to worry about. Minnesota proved last year, & northwestern heck almost beat Wisconsin but lost due to no offense. All one has to do is dare Wisconsin to throw & shut down Wisconsin run game
