Your definition of “free pass” is questionable. They ran the table against a decent schedule.

Decent schedule??? Their signature win was at home against a Michigan team that was breaking in a new QB in the opener. The same Michigan team with 11 games under its belt that was just smoked by OSU. Five wins by one score, including 4-8 Ball State, 7-5 Pitt, 6-6 Vandy, and 5-7 USC.

This will be a repeat of their other appearance in the CFP.

So what four teams have a better resume?

When you’re minimizing a win over a top 10 team because it was week 1, or worrying about MOV when they ran the table, you’ve got a pretty clear bias against them.

That's not bias -- it's factual observation. A home win in week one against a year 1 QB by one score is not a clear statement. Not being able to dominate average to below-average competition is not indicative of an elite team. I have the same criticism for UCF; nice undefeated run, but not against the same talent that most P5 teams face.

One of the most absurd national titles was awarded in 1984 to BYU for a clean slate that was "punctuated" by a one score win against a Michigan team that finished 6-6 with the Holiday Bowl loss.

A "clean slate" is meaningless without context.

A pass is actually true. Georgia should do the same at ND and not play a conference game and risk losing. Why do that? They are already #4 The committee likes teams that don’t play that extra game, sit at home and plop them in the playoffs. At least in this case it’s sorta not ND’s fault they don’t play in a conference.

Oh wait.....It is their fault.

ND needs a conference champ game, simple as that. The fact that they do not have to play one is a clear, unfair advantage they have over every other team.

Would love to see how they would do in the ACC against Clemson.

Your full of shit. ND can’t control what the teams will be like in 10 years. Before the year, they had the hardest schedule without a doubt. Stanford, Michigan, Florida St, USC could all have been top 10. Plus they beat 2 conference winners in Pitt and Northwestern. This schedule could have been sick.

If they have a loss and are on the bubble, it’s a disadvantage. Run the table and you get the spoils.

But it wasn't. You don't get credit for what a schedule "could" have been.
As others have noted here, this is a greed (and fear) issue with ND. They pocket more $$ as an independent and they don't risk playing in a power conference.

BTW, neither Pitt nor NW have won their conferences.

I am not saying nd is not a good team point is they do not have the risk of playing that last game like all the conference teams do.

Ohio State in 2016 and Alabama in 2017 made the playoffs and neither played in their conference championship game. Neither were undefeated btw.

And then play Clemson. Why would do they do that. The downside for ND is that they pretty much have to go undefeated to get in.

Good point but generally its conference champions but obviously there have been exceptions.
