No it isn't. And at Wimbledon women do less work for more pay.
However Wimbledon can decide to do as they please. In their case it was likely going to be a sponsorship issue if they didn't provide equal shares of the purse so they went along with it.
Danica Patrick was paid considerably more than other racers despite a terrible race record.

It’s not justified at Wimbledon. Women play Best of Three sets.....Men play Best of Five sets. Sorry, Women do NOT deserve the same prize money.
But you have to understand that the reason women play 3 (today not historically) is to clear them out in time for the men's games.
So rethinking this... it may be economically justified to pay the women more per set. Because the costs of stretching their matches to 5 sets to earn the 'equal' pay would crush the tournament finances.

The wheelchair division could play best of 10 sets, and it doesn’t mean they should make more...all about eyeballs and interest to me, and generally I’d find interest to be pretty equal over the long haul. Tennis makes sense.
I'll stand by my demand for USSF to split into 2 entities.
It will solve every bit of complaining. The women will not be happy.

I will not rest until Lebron's salary is equal to that of the best WNBA player, till the ranks of construction workers, miners, and garbage collectors reflect equal numbers of women. Agreed...and the problem with demanding equity is that it won't lift A'ja Wilson, it will lower LeBron James.
I spent some time in the post soviet russian days. they told me the soviet union collapsed because the black market became larger than their economy and wasn't sustainable. Why was the black market larger? Because the black market was better at addressing and supplying the vast disparity of "need". There was no person or committee smarter than the black market.
It's similar to MMA where the UFC went from not having any women to having women's matches as PPV main events. The reason was simple - fans were interested and willing to pay to watch women compete. For whatever reason, fans of soccer and basketball and casual fans of both sports, like me, don't generally find the women's game as appealing as the men's. It isn't just a US problem because most of the soccer federations of Europe are dealing with the same issues and complaints from the women on their respective national teams. IIRC, one of the best players from Norway sat out the last WC in protest of their federation's treatment of the players.
As for the USSF-USWNT dispute, I think it is reasonable to expect that both national teams be given the same training and transportation treatment - quality facilities, quality medical care, nobody flies coach or everybody flies coach. My gut says that both should have same contract and payment terms since that would be the very definition of equal treatment. The problem is that the two groups are not in similar economic positions relative to their ability to earn a living playing soccer outside the national team. I like idea of creating separate entities for the two teams. That would allow each to work international governing bodies, sponsors, media entities, etc for what is in the best interests of their athletes and the future of their sport.

Did they qualify for the Olympics? When was the last time they did? They will be literally unwatchable in the Olympic soccer competition.
You’re really using the men’s Olympic tournament as proof of anything in men’s soccer (other than the fact that a B- version of our under 23 team wasn’t as good as other u23 teams during our offseason)?
Very well said. You nailed the source of the problem, most people prefer watching mens sports compared to women which results in a huge dispartiy in TV revenue to distribute. The vast majority of funding for the USMT is from the World Cup, the men dwaf the women in TV revenue. Thus, they make a lot more money simply because there is more to distribute.
I would agree under normal circumstances, but since we are moving to the politically correct culture, I would think LeBron would agree to give up all those millions to help women become equal. Has nothing to do with who brings in more $$$$$$$$!!!!!! 😉
If the U.S. is fielding a B- squad in Olympic qualifying play and failing to qualify, that seems like a ginormous problem to me. I doubt that is the case.
How about some OTHER measure of soccer excellence? How has the USMNT fared in World Cup play? I think we both know the answer to that one.
I may seem critical, but I think some criticism is merited. That should not be construed as me not hoping for more success from the USMNT.
I still think the U.S. women's players should be paid MORE. Not just more in absolute dollar terms, but MORE than the men.

It is exactly the case. As the Olympics is not an official FIFA competition, teams did not have to release players. So the European teams did not (though the European federation (UEFA) based qualifying on the U-21 European championships, which is a FIFA competition to avoid this issue). That left essentially a full team of players playing for European clubs (and at least one MLS club) who were not permitted to participate. Honduras, on the other hand, is in the middle of their season and has very few players overseas (and has been successful at the Olympics too).

Agreed. We've really got two leagues today: Open and "women". There is really no longer a "men's" league; if you want to play in the "men's league" and are good enough, you certainly can. We had a female FG kicker this year in the NCAA. With gender fluidity, I am not sure why this persists. The issue of transgender is now a hot button. So we should just cut to the chase and have a "premier" league where top dollar is made and open to any sex. We can then have a "junior" league that pays less. Wait, that's what we have!
In the end, sports have been performance-oriented regardless of race, sex, religion, etc. Are we going to now have quotas?
In some cases, perhaps. I played much of my amateur soccer career in "co/rec" leagues, where you had a mixed team. It was enjoyable. I'd not advocate that for higher level play, however.

Well, OK....depends on if the Vandy program wants to win, make PR and/or money. But there are some really good women athletes...I can see a woman playing for a men's golf team. Either way, in the end, sports teams need to consider if they are performance-driven or quota-driven. I mean, if you are the NBA, do you now need to hire female players, white players, and short players to reflect society at large or do you just hire the best people to win games?
As kgilbert stated, the Olympics are a youth level competition on the men's side (whereas they are a very important tournament for the women). It's not a "problem" as much as it's just a fact and/or product of the situation. Had we qualified for the Olympics, we would have been sending a "B" team to Japan, since the timing of them sucks, clubs don't have to release their players, and there are much more important games this summer/fall.
How has the men's team fared? We've qualified for the World Cup in 7 of the last 8 tournaments, gotten to the round 16 in three of those, and the round of 8 once. We've been one of the top two teams in our region for a generation (for a while, we were 1A to Mexico's 1B, they're ahead of us today, but we're gaining quickly and everyone looks forward to seeing how they match up again at this point). We've been to a Confed Cup final, one several Continental championships, topped our Group at a World Cup, had a lot of success at the U20 level, etc. Anything but "irrelevant". And through it all, the Olympics is about the last measure of success for a National Team's program on the men's side.
Except that the men’s team brings in more dollars. Do you think LPGA and WNBA players should get paid as much as their male counterparts even though the LPGA generates far less revenue than the PGA and the WNBA even less?
Now if he was a true champion of the rights of female athletes, he would introduce a bill to ban transgenders from playing girls/women’s sports. What was the purpose of Title IX Senator?

at some point this issue will end up like the current equality debacle...set up to protect minorities, but since so many strides forward have been made now the majority are suing because the minority is being favored in manners against the law.
