Why should there be separate accounts for men’s and women’s World Cup. Make it one account and pay the athletes the same.
Don La-mon saying something I agree with makes me question everything I thought I knew.pretty interesting debate on CNN. The women think there should be more promotion of women's soccer. But promotion isn't free, CNN itself charges for it. So promotion goes along with revenue. The ramp up together.
I'm all for equal pay depending on the facts. If US Soccer is getting taxpayer money in one form or another such as facility rights, then Yes, equal pay.
But, if that organization wants to be private, then No, each should survive on their own revenue.
Agreed. In sports, it is like saying every first baseman should be paid the same. Underperforming players can blame the fact that lower quality players around him make it more difficult for him to do his job and achieve the numbers a first basement can get playing for a higher quality team.Equal is bad.
Equality is good.
If salesperson 1 generates 10M in revenue and salesperson 2 generates 1M in revenue, should they be paid the same?
Equal opportunity is good. Forced equality of outcome is very bad, as it requires unearned adjustments based on some immutable characteristic...which is the definition of at least one -ism
There is great irony in these arguments for sports.Agreed. In sports, it is like saying every first baseman should be paid the same. Underperforming players can blame the fact that lower quality players around him make it more difficult for him to do his job and achieve the numbers a first basement can get playing for a higher quality team.
I turned on BTN this afternoon and watched the women's hockey game in Minnesota Dukuth where the stands were empty. Women don't draw the revenue.pretty interesting debate on CNN. The women think there should be more promotion of women's soccer. But promotion isn't free, CNN itself charges for it. So promotion goes along with revenue. The ramp up together.
Both Women’s gymnastics and figure skating started later, but are far more popular now - because people like watching them more. Hence they get more money. That woman on the right was womansplaining.pretty interesting debate on CNN. The women think there should be more promotion of women's soccer. But promotion isn't free, CNN itself charges for it. Then again, part of the marketing of stars like Alex Morgan is that she's good looking and good looking gals appeal to men because they're good looking. Different things appeal to different people and men are, in general, more into sports and beyond that, more into men's sports then women's sports, thus the men's sports generate more money. Meanwhile, you can point to other things that appeal more to women, in general (as Bill Burr did). It’s complicated. The women’s team has been wildly more successful than the men’s team - in terms of bringing home hardware - and is much more marketable over the past decade.
If follow the USMNT you remember losing to Costa Rico 4-0 or Trinidad & Tobago 2-1 as we failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
The US Women have marketable starts like Alex Morgan while the men were struggling post Klinesman.
Revenues from FIFA are only part of the equation and whether the men would beat the women head-to-head is a moronic argument.
except the women's national team doesn't bring in the same revenue as the men's.It’s complicated. The women’s team has been wildly more successful than the men’s team - in terms of bringing home hardware - and is much more marketable over the past decade.

The women’s team has been wildly more successful because they’re the world’s tallest midget. In many countries women aren’t given the opportunity or resources to even play sports let alone play at a high level, so the competition level for the women’s team has sucked forever. That’s starting to change, so if the women’s team stops being wildly successful years from now, are they going to then take a pay cut? It’s complicated. The women’s team has been wildly more successful than the men’s team - in terms of bringing home hardware - and is much more marketable over the past decade.

This is not clear. Yes, we know that FIFA payouts are lower for the women’s teams but we do not know US Soccer’s revenue splits from Nike or Volkswagen or the other multimillion dollar sponsors. The fact that US Soccer agreed to the equal pay agreement suggests that the marketing value of the #1 global women’s team offsets FIFA’s payout for our mid-tier men’s teamexcept the women's national team doesn't bring in the same revenue as the men's.
...and oil rig workers, construction, road paving, ....basically any job where your outside, spend time away from home, and have a reasonable chance of dying. The older I get the more I"m wondering when they're going to get around to applying that male/female equity stuff to life expectancy.
I think you're missing the point. Most of us die before our wives because we WANT to.The older I get the more I"m wondering when they're going to get around to applying that male/female equity stuff to life expectancy.
No one is arguing that the women are equally good, head-to-head.There no comparison between the 2 teams. I’m sure it has to be posted here but the boys 15 and under team beat the women’s national team five zip a couple years ago.
Why don’t we let Megan Rapinoe try out for the men’s team and see how she does
Well, the further we get into the equality discussion, the close we get to combined teams. Forget women's and men's teams. Pick the best players regardless of man, woman, transgender, etc. and let 'em get it on.It’s complicated. The women’s team has been wildly more successful than the men’s team - in terms of bringing home hardware - and is much more marketable over the past decade.
