Wow. Fairly evenly distributed so far.
I thought our Indy fan on this board who seems to know a ton about Nick Lee was pretty sure he's not moving up?
If Nick does move up, is it Bartlett at 41?

Bartlett looked a lot smaller than Merideth, who was a 141 pounder and now wrestles 143. I think he'll be undersized at 149. Combine that with typical freshman struggles with bottom wrestling and getting outhorsed and I think he would really need a year to fit into that weight.

Of course with his skills and the free year you go for it, but I give Verk the slight edge. Definitely could be wrong though, he's dynamic on his feet.

Nick Lee goes whereever Nick Lee wants to go. If he wants to go 149, that would be nice.

very debatable that Lee/Verk is better than Beau/Lee, so I don't know if I would call that perfect

I think Lee at 141 plus ____ at 149 ultimately scores them more points at NCAAs than Lee at 149 and ______ at 141.

Regardless of what the idiots at Flo think, I think Lee is the clear favorite at 141 if Yianni is up at 149. Unless he's been bulking up in a major way this off season, he was already a rmodestly sized 141 last year, compared to others.

Since Bartlett is the leader in this poll, for argument's sake let's say he's at whatever weight Lee doesn't go. Bartlett probably does a lot worse at 149 compared to what he'd do at 141, than Lee does. Although he wouldn't be the "clear favorite," he'd probably still be a favorite to make the finals at least.

Bartlett at 141 with Lee at 149 might be our strongest dual team, but, as always, the NCAAs are Cael's goal.

5 finalists is a formula that has worked for us at the last 4 NCAAs. IMO, 141 would give Lee his best shot at joining potential finalist RBY, Starocci, Brooks and Kerk. Let best man go 149 and take our chances.

Math comes into play here.

Let's assume Lee wins 141 or takes 2nd at 149. That means he loses 4 pts at 149.

To recover that, 141 Bartlett needs to score 4.5+ pts more than 149 Verk.

Let's also ignore bonus. Bartlett would likely score more than Verk, but 149 Lee would likely score less than 141 Lee.

That means Bartlett has to place. Quick comparison of Verk vs. Bartlett results that would make up that 4.5 pts:
Verk 1-2 - BB 8th
Verk R12 - BB 7th
Verk 8th - BB 5th
Verk 7th - BB 4th
Verk 6th - BB 3rd
Verk 5th - BB 2nd

Enough to make our heads hurt yet?

The likely best answer is Lee at 141 where he maximizes points, and let Bartlett compete with Verk for 149.

I really don't want to say it because I like all of our wrestlers but verk doesn't seem to have that folk style that scores points. How many matches last year where it took him a while to get going. I think beau is definitely the better wrestler at 149. However we have a ton of guys right there who could be good

That's one of the things about the "luxury" of having multiple high level athletes at many weight classes. Someone has to sit. If Nick Lee actually has next year, too, and Verkleeren does as well, that means that we'll have, between 141 and 149:

Nick Lee
Austin Boone
Jarod Verkleeren
Beau Bartlett
Shayne Van Ness
Terrell Barraclough

That means that, unless SVN gray shirts and then red shirts, and/or someone gets huge, we'll have at least one legit AA threat riding the bench.

Or with the new transfer rules...

I imagine Goodale is still trying to get SVN (he has technically only verballed right?)

Hot route! Nature vs nurture. Nature always wins. :p
Then nurture will fight in the shade! :)

If Nick Lee is back next year, then Van Ness is very likely redshirting. IMO, there is close to a 0% chance that Bartlett or Van Ness are ever riding the bench. They’re both going to be stars.

Just my guess, but if Bartlett goes 149 his lot worse at 149 than 141 will be much better than just about all other 149 pounders at 149.

Seems like we have good 149 options. Can one of these guys go to 157 where we have a bigger hole? (assuming Berge isn’t wrestling. ) 157 is one of our weaker weights and with llogjam at 149, somebody muscling up to 157 could be a huge help. Any word on that possibility?

We have Bergie, Piph and Gardner, all CAPABLE of qualifying (well at least with a 33 man bracket, lol)

SVN has talked about possibly being a 157 in college.
Correct. But I believe Shayne said he may eventually grow in to a 57, depending on how much he grows. I took the comment as he’s assuming he’d start out at 49 in the early part of his college career, possibly moving up eventually to 57.

Bartlett mentioned he could start out at 33 or 41 depending on where he was needed. Question I’d have is if Beau does move up to 49, would/could he move back to 41 post Nick Lee?

There is inevitablly going to be some real room battles and new recruits not getting in lineup as expected as a result of this free year deal.

Nor I, i was more asking the question because a couple folks here were sure BoBar could be a finalist. Someday definately but up from his preferred 33 or 41 is asking a lot of the young man.
Has anybody actually said he'd be a 149 finalist?

Or did somebody say he'd be the best 149, and it got interpreted as nationally instead of in the PSU room?
