I was watching some of the medal round and they had a few Buckeyes jabbering about the meaning of positive infinity and none of them had a clue what to say about it. It was all just meaningless tautologies.

Listening to Ryan blather about it was cringe-worthy. What a goofy dude

Question 1: If TanTom could give ESPN an infinite number of interviews and in each interview he said an infinite number of words ... would his number of words outnumber his interviews?

Question 2: At some point, wouldn't positive infinity meet up with negative infinity?

Question 3: If we are to expect the unexpected, wouldn't that make the unexpected the expected?

Just wondering.;)

Related Question: If sumptinwong attends TaTo's infinite number of ESPN interviews posing as a reporter from NJ.com and questions TaTo ad infinitum about his habit of casting aspersions on NCAA refs, rules, etc, will the net result be a positive or negative effect on tOSU's current momentum?

They'd both be wong.

I don't know but I hope the nickname TaTo catches on.....

What happens in the event positive infinity collides with anti-infinity/negative infinity? Is there a cataclysm which collapses the universe?

No one on either site I go to for Buckeye wrestling critisize or make fun of Penn State coaches or wrestlers. Are there random isolated comments here n there? Sure, but you won’t ever see threads or repetitive comments or posts relative on a regular basis like you do here.

Why is that? I’m curious.

I know this fan base is one of the most knowledgeable there is. Why do you constantly revert to childish name callIng and childish induendo to a program striving to become like yours and a coach who has taken the program to new heights?

As a fan of wrestling in general, aren’t some of you better than this? It just doesn’t make sense to me. It’s behavior you’d expect from people jealous or envious of someone else and god knows that’s not the case here. You are far and wide the standard. It only makes sense for you to act like it as well.

It just comes across so juvenile at times. I know my opinion is just that and I know even more how much weight it holds....

Just respectively my .02.

It's not the kids, I could pull for all of them. Ryan I'm sure has a positive influence on how they wrestle and how they conduct themselves ... no question he's a good coach.

It's all the extraneous stuff - pin chains, robes, genetic potential, positive infinity, average officials, tweeting from Aruba, long bus rides, not how we would do it, best dual team ever, seeking the camera at every turn.

I think he made a big mistake by throwing down the gantlet, and focusing on Penn State and the 2-team race. His kids were caught looking over their shoulder and started to wrestle tight.

And in consecutive years throwing the lunger brick at the NCAA Tournament refs from Twitter -- as a member of the NCAA Division 1 Wrestling Committee.

At least next year when he tries to retroactively overturn calls on Twitter, his NCAA Committee term will have elapsed.

With the exception of a few posters on this board, the teasing of Tom Ryan is nothing more than good natured ribbing based on goofy things he has said or done. It’s not like the baseless and mean spirited attacks on Cael you see on other boards. Most folks here recognize that Ryan is a great coach, has done great things with tOSU’s wrestling program, and is good for the sport. And if you stick around you’ll see that we also defend Ryan and others against unfair personal attacks.

But we also enjoy humor and a clever turn of phrase. Take for example the name “TaTo,” which you find childish and juvenile. That’s a play on the nickname of one of your exceptional wrestlers (NaTo) and a derivation of “Tan Tom,” which is a shortcut way to help distinguish Ryan from the other B1G head wrestling coach named Tom (Brands), and has the added benefit of simultaneously teasing Ryan for traveling to sunny Aruba hours after last year’s NCAA tournament. It’s funny and it’s harmless. If immediately after losing the NCAAs Cael were to travel to, let’s say Iceland, and tOSU fans started calling him “Pale Cael,” I would find that funny too. Childish? Maybe. But if you can’t enjoy a good, harmless inside joke among friends I think you’re missing out on one of life’s little treasures.

And in consecutive years throwing the lunger brick at the NCAA Tournament refs from Twitter -- as a member of the NCAA Division 1 Wrestling Committee.

Or unfairly relying on an isolated snapshot in the middle of a wrestling sequence to tweet that his wrestler was robbed of TD points, only to then botch his correction tweet when someone calls him out on it.

Tom needs to grow up and stop with the Twitter nonsense. It's not a good look. He and every other coach knew going into NCAA's that you only have three challenges and you need to use them wisely. I think OSU used two the first day (if I remember correctly). I think one of OSU's challenges actually saved Moore from getting beat as he was gassing pretty bad. You could argue that they used it just to give Moore a "lunger".

yea, I was watching that match and predicting he was going to lose (regardless of how the challenge resulted)... The challenge saved him and he was able to defend himself better.

Cael's media "plan" annoys me because it's basically like a a freshly bought 3" binder still in its shrinkwrap. His angle is 100% obtuse, and it frustrates everyone on the outside. It's certainly his prerogative, and you can't argue with the results, however.

I actually like Brands' "speak my heart" approach--it comes across as genuine, if it invites ridicule for him being a passionate guy and putting his foot in his mouth sometimes. Who can't identify on some level with your two passionate and crazy uncles T&T?

Ryan's comes from a (somtimes distored, IMO) intention of doing what's best for him, his team, and his sport (usually in that order--maybe team first). It's intentional enough, there's no wondering about the angle; it's disingenuous enough to evoke a bad visit to a used car lot. In my opinion, he doesn't quite get it, but he's a scrapper, and he's very good at other parts of his job. This just happens to be the visible one.

I wish I enjoyed Cael’s pressers as much as I enjoy those of his wrestlers. But Cael’s are generally painful to watch. He usually seems completely disinterested and eager to leave. Did he have a traumatic media experience earlier in life? It’s almost like he’s so distrustful of the media that he refuses to indulge them at all. The few times I’ve found his interviews engaging, interesting or informative have been with Byers during the coaches show. But even that’s hit or miss.

This is so surprising given his likability and coaching brilliance. You’d think someone would pull him aside and say, “It would be good for PSU and the sport if you were a bit more engaging and friendly with the media.” I’m not suggesting he have an embedded FLO camera crew with him at all times like TaTo, or get wild-eyed and rambling like TnT sometimes do. But being a bit more accessible and engaging would be nice. Seems like he’s missing an opportunity to further market the team’s brand.

Maybe, but I don't see how Sanderson being more animated in interviews would be better for PSU. We've won seven of the last eight team championships. The record speaks for itself. It's not like football where most games are televised and coach interviews are where most young high schoolers watching at home see a given coach for the first time. The elite wrestling community is a much smaller group. Most recruits have likely met Sanderson and the other coaches long before they see them speak on television. Aside from the casual observer, a ten of fifteen second interview on television isn't going to affect anyone's view of Sanderson. IHMO, of course.

I'd challenge the accusation, but I have been informed by Rivals that all my Reply Challenges have been used up for this thread, so I am dependent on the moderator to fix it.

I greatly enjoy Cael's pressers. I think he & Nolf are very similar: both smart and dorky and comfortable in their own skin being so. Those attributes appear differently for each in their interviews of course. Cael knows his obligations, and in correct priority order: to his wrestlers, to his program, then to the media asking questions. My favorite part of his are when he becomes immediately aware of the ridiculousness of something coach-speak-y he just uttered. Which is why we hear him use "obviously" so often. And they're always followed by a wry grin of self-awareness.

One of my favorite examples, a tired-looking a.m. Cael who admitted he'd just gotten out of bed and obliged to do a pre-tourney presser to a PSU audience. At one point, he got his coach-speaks on a roll and ended up with this:

"It's the National Tournament. If you wanna be a National Champion you gotta....[self-aware wry grin] ... beat everyone else."

I need to add to this, now that I've had a chance to review the film and do stop-frame analysis.

Here is BFosr1 in real time:

But, when I look at the reverse angle still shot, this is what I get:
old-two-type.jpg

Obviously that is TWO (finger typing), and if Rivals reviewed and scored it properly, those TWO would have allowed me to advance and win the Internet for that day. Disappointing.

I can't wait to see how he manipulates the seeds again next year for Nationals. He was very creative this year...either pushing his wrestlers up to avoid stronger opponents, or sending them down 1 or 2 seeds to give them more favorable matchups against wrestlers who everyone knew were overseeded due to poor competition(Mizzou, Va Tech), and then slotting every PSU wrestler he could into the worst possible seed in comparison. Especially hilarious was the 157 seeding, which put the best wrestler in the nation BY FAR into the 3 seed, and the second best into the 6 seed, while giving his own wrestler a virtual walk into the semi final.

... I think he made a big mistake by throwing down the gantlet, and focusing on Penn State and the 2-team race. His kids were caught looking over their shoulder and started to wrestle tight.
Maybe. But his kids wrestled great before they met higher-seeded guys ...
