Got a letter today from the Development Office looking for a check. I'm astonished by the timing.

I didn't go to the Temple game, but are there people here who may have cut back or stopped donations who are going to start up again now that there was a highlight film shown in the stadium that had Paterno in it? I am curious as to whether this swayed anyone.

Not me. I wasn't swayed. Over the last 25 or so years I have given what I consider to be a significant amount (~$30K) to the university. This flow of money stopped when the statue came down and won't start until it is back up.

Living hand to mouth spares me the pain of denying my "nourishing mother."

It's clear to anyone who was walking down E. College on the morning of the game that not many people, if any, have Moved On. Lots of Joe t-shirts etc. I suspect they are trying to reconnect with the disaffected masses, although it seems unlikely to work.

If the only reason they did gave even the minimal effort that they did was to get more money, then we've gotten nowhere with these idiots.

Here's what you do..mail it back with a nice brown stripe on it. Use shoe polish or dog crap.

They'll get the "mess"age.

I received an email from someone, from the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, who is traveling through my area and would like to meet with me and learn a little about me and tell me about some new and exciting things going on at PSU.

I told her I could meet with her for a 2 hour period on Thursday. I know she's going to be looking for money, but I will take extreme pleasure in telling her why I won't be giving anything until things change - like a whole new BOT, like the BOT publicly admitting they made this a Penn State scandal, like the BOT admitting they went after Paterno and others to save their own asses, etc.

Has anyone else been contacted?

Yes, I had the same type of contact before the semester started, I think around Arts Festival. I politely declined (and I was polite, unlike I usually am). I probably still have her email somewhere.

About a month ago I got an email telling me they were going to call me in the next few days. (Luckily I had already changed my number after a move). I had my name removed from their mailing lists in 2011. They were fine with that......until a month or so ago. Now they want money again.

When I first read this I thought, that's a good chunka change but then I thought if you include tickets, I'm sure a lot of us are in the same level. $30K is probably a good number for me too. Now, you're buying tickets and buying your football fix but still, I moved here in no small part to be close to the football fix. I wouldn't have spent that if I had a 2 hour ride in. Now I'm buying on the street if I go.

Yes, and I've talked with the guy from my area twice over the last couple of years. I've been polite but I've also given him an earful--and mostly without mentioning Joe, except in passing. You can talk about how the university mishandled and continues to mishandle things. I talked about the abuse alumni get and that the admins won't stand up for the alums. The mess Alumni Council has become. I told him why they were going to have trouble with a new campaign. It's worth the time I thin, as these folks who do fundraising are pros--and the word will get back to the administration.

I'm seeing that they have started another fund drive. Cross checking the caller ID with a phone lookup, I can see they're at it again. I stopped answering the phone when I don't know the number. I hate telemarketers.

The last time I had a caller, it was a student from the University. I filled her head with information about how the BOT has minimized the alumni voice, as well as the Alumni Assn. She was totally unaware of what is happening in regards to University governance. I told her no more money until we get our voice back, and have a bit of a say. I imagine manning the phones is quite the eye opening experience for many students.

Tell them you left a big check out w/ the flowers, pictures, and bricks. It must've gotten tossed. Oh well.

Not only didn't sway me but pissed me off more. A couple months ago got a call from a student. I explained to him that I wasn't going to give anything more until the OGBOT are completely gone, the entire truth comes out and the Paterno family gets the appropriate apologies. He said he hears that a lot, understands how I feel and actually agrees with me.

My estimate didn't include the cost of the tickets. That was the amount I paid to the NLC to get decent seats. Back in the JoePa era we all needed to pay to the NLC to get any tickets at all!

It was a conversation within a PS4RS thread, which I did just locate. Barry seems to know quite a bit about it. I will post some comments but I'm trying to find official info, too.

Apparently only about $2M goes toward the families. Quite a lot goes to Hershey Med physician salaries. And it is all counted toward the overall capital fundraising activities of PSU.

Will follow up.

Here's Barry's main comment on that THON thread I referred to (upshot - perhaps Ira does not have quite as much control over it as I thought, but it is disturbing that it counts toward their Capital Campaigns):

THON is such a wonderful event, for so many reasons - not the least of which is the incredible dedication and sacrifice displayed by so many PSU students - that one hesitates to discuss anything that may be taken as a "negative"

That said, a large chunk of the $$$$ raised by THON goes towards paying salaries/overhead/expenses etc for Physicians at the HMC. In other words, it offsets PSU HMC expenses.

About 10-15% in any given year goes to direct support of kids and their families. (So that jives with the figures that Susan Newkirk Lewis shared.....total THON revenues are typically in the $20-25 Million range)

Another 10-15% typically goes directly to Research

"Administrative Expenses" usually take up about another $1,000,000 give or take....

Just about all of the rest is placed into endowments - which are used to underwrite the salaries/expenses etc for HMC physicians

Now, in doing so, does it catalyze significant Ped Cancer related work that otherwise might go "undone"? Quite possibly.

Do I trust the folks in charge (at PSU and HMC....Dambly, Joyner, Erickson et al) to be righteous stewards of those funds? Nope. Not even a little bit. I can't imagine anyone else would either.

Given the current "opaque" , multi-leveled nature of THON finances, is it possible/likely that $$$$ contributed to THON ends up being used as a revenue source for what should be PSU/HMC normal operating expenses? Or even for "other uses"?

One would certainly have a basis for suspicion (at the least).

Not me. Fire Joe, disgrace him and they expect money from people who respected him? Ha! The fundraisers have stopped calling me. I told them many times I will never give a penny again until Joe is appropriately honored. This past weekend was the family's affair, not the university's. God bless Sue for having way more guts and integrity than the BOT.

I give to THON. That's it.
Thon is it for donations from me now and maybe forever. I have very little confidence that this corrupt BOT and administration will ever significantly change their ways nor that the truth will come out.

I will not be donating again for the foreseeable future. Five years later, I'm still disgusted with the University.

Bob, I read recently that Ira & Co are dipping into that honeypot, too. I don't know if that's true but until I know it is not, no money from me to THON, either.

That makes me sad.
That's BS. You sound like that lying A-Hole Paco on the sPitt board. Don't spread BS like this around here.

I've increased my donation because I'm able to and want to fund a scholarship in perpetuity. I hear from the recipients who would probably otherwise not be able to attend. I'm not going to hold the acts of the BOT against them. I also give generously to THON. As a cancer survivor (so far anyway), i want to see others benefit from treatment or a cure.

I hope those who spend a lot of time on messageboards and obviously care a lot about football but have quit donating are ok with the program lagging behind others and not competing.

I love Joe Paterno as much as any of you but he would roll over in his grave to know that those that followed him and loved him so much would quit donating to the program he built and let it lag behind others. Joe Paterno did not want this to be Paterno State University. He wanted it to be Penn State University. He also wanted nothing to do with a statue.

What Joe Paterno would be proud to see would be for this University to rise up and be better than ever. He never wanted it to be about him. He wanted it to be about the University

And if the powers that be ever came to their senses and got to the point where they could use the great name and legacy of Coach Paterno, they'd quickly exceed any goal they sought, financially. But they got themselves into this mess, and I'll be damned if I'll be shamed into getting them out of it.

Babies and hot water. Don't throw them both away. Now is the time to prove your love for Penn State. Not the football program not Joe but for the great University coincided with them.
A friend in need is a true friend. When you turn your back Corbet and crew win. The target was the University Joe was collateral damage.

This isn't about Joe Paterno. This is about a complete lack of fiduciary responsibility by the BOT. It's about poor stewardship by the administration. Yes, it is also a learning experience. When the alumni are told our time at PSU is done, our opinions and input aren't wanted, just our donations, perhaps it's time to show them what a university without alumni input truly is like in all ways.

If weight doesn't matter then I just found a cheap way to travel to State College.
Size matters....;)

Seriously, the boxes do have a specific size. Small is a bit bigger than a paperback book, for example.
