So i’m taking the family and heading down to Columbia, SC next weekend to visit my mom. My mom has always lived in SEC country (Flordida, Georgia, Tennessee,,and now Sout Carolina) so I always have a rooting interest for whatever team is in the area she is living in. When I am down there next weekend, my step-father has secured some South Carolina/Florida tickets and tailgating passes to a well-to-do booster’s area for us. My question is, what is the boards thoughts on wearing non participating team gear to another teams game? Can I mix and match (ie: PSU sweatshirt with SC hat) or do I just go full PSU?

Wearing PSU gear to a non-psu game is rather strange.

You're a guest of someone. Support that team.

Why would someone wear Penn State gear to a game between two other teams? So they can make another post on here afterwards about how someone had a snide comment?

Hm. I don't know. When I went to a UCLA/ASU game at the Rose Bowl, I wore all UCLA gear to support my friend. I saw two or three guys dressed in USC shirts and thought it was weird.

Since you truly don't have an allegiance to either of the teams playing, Penn State isn't a hated rival of either team, and it's not a white out where you will be seen as a "turd in a punch bowl", then go ahead and wear your Penn State gear.

I would wear a red shirt for USC. If you wore a PSU hat too- that wouldn't be a problem. South Carolina fans are pretty good.

If your step father has you tailgating with the railroad cars then make sure you really thank him and bring them something when you visit. That area outside the stadium costs a lot of money to tailgate in and is coveted by Gamecock fans.

I visit a lot of other teams...I usually will wear a shirt of the local team with PSU hat. For example, I went to Alabama game a few weeks ago...I purchased an Alabama t-shirt and wore it with PSu hat. It usually sparks up good conversation. I went to national title game last year and wore PSU hat. People always speak highly of Penn State...that is my experience.

I wore a Penn State shirt to an NC State game two years ago. I got looks (shrug). Not dirty looks though.

Agree with this but don't be surprised if someone shouts something derogatory.

Went to the VT (daughter's school) vs. Duke game last Saturday night (stayed dry in the downpour) and always wear VT gear to those games. Sunday I was in a Penn State polo shirt for breakfast, when a woman in a Roanoke College sweatshirt walked up to me as she was leaving, and with an incredibly sympathetic look on her face told me how upset she was when we lost our game... Gotta love the camaraderie.

Nothing too exciting, but saw a guy in a Sparty shirt walking around at the UM v. PSU game. Seemed odd to me.

Most of my fall wardrobe is PSU stuff, so I'd have to go out of my way to not wear a PSU shirt or sweatshirt or hat. I wouldn't think twice about wearing a PSU shirt to a game like that.

Yeah, I don't understand the big deal. I'm a Penn State fan. I always wear Penn State gear no matter who I'm watching. If someone takes that as some sort of insult, that's their problem. I went to a bunch of Clemson games and a Gamecock game and never had a problem.

Interesting question. I'm planning to go to the B10 Championship game this year, whether we're in it or not, because I had such a great time in Indy last year. I was planning on wearing PSU gear. I didn't even think it would be an issue, and that it might be a conversation starter. Last year I recall seeing some guys in Michigan and OSU gear. I think some B10 folks make it a yearly pilgrimage (like I plan to), so maybe it's a little different than the OP's situation.

Saw some dude dressed up in Buckeye gear at the Michigan game two weeks ago. He looked very odd. Good look if you want people laughing at you...

Gotta get a "GO COCKS" sweatshirt or t-shirt.

OO has it exactly right. You are a PSU alum so you gotta wear some PSU gear. Plus, the locals will be interested and curious when they see it. But temper it by wearing a little Carolina swag, and you're good to go.

I wore Penn State gear to the PAC 12 championship, last year. I wanted to make it clear why I was cheering for Colorado. Unfortunately, it didn't help.

Honest question was it weird because it was a B1G could conference member? Would it have been as “weird” if that same person was wearing Washington, Texas, Ga Tech, or Boise State gear? I can see it making me take a second look if it was an instate team (Pitt, Temple at a PSU game) or an in conference member like you referenced.

In my OP I would never wear another SEC team or Clemson gear to their game; strictly PSU. It’s really the only sport/team I get worked up for.

I was hoping wearing PSU would be a conversation starter down south as I love talking college football. I do this with the full expectation of Sandusky comments at some point.

I wear non-PSU clothing to PSU games. I won't give the U or the ncaa a dime for licensed merchandise. I do have some shirts that just say STATE or stuff like that, but nothing licensed since late 2011.

Go all in PSU. The southern school's have their own rivals and most speak highly of Penn State. I sell in AL, FL, SC and Georgia and most see Penn State gear regularly. GO STATE

When I was at the PSU/Iowa game last year there was a guy sitting near us in a WV sweatshirt. I think he just wanted to see a good CFB night game. He was a great sport and really seemed to enjoy the environment and make friends with some PSU fans.

My son and I went to Missouri at Georgia this year. He wore a PSU polo and I had a PSU hat on. We were very well and respectfully received by the Missouri and Georgia fans, as well as, of course, the displaced Penn Staters who were very happy to see their team's colors.

Why do you feel required to wear any teams identifying garb?

Not that uncommon for college, but NFL i find it silly. At least college people respect how loyal you are to your school and you may have gone there so not really much to say.

Every year we go on a guys road trip and this year I went to LSU for Auburn game. I bought a $7 LSU hat at the nike outlet and wore a yellow tank top (its nice to wear tank tops to games in october), always support the home team on the roadies unless its my team playing them.
By the way, Death Valley was cool, the tailgates were amazing, women were gorgeous and they get dressed up to games like going to a cocktail party, but Happy Valley is much much louder.

I was in Jacksonville for bowl game few years back vs Georgia, their fans were disgusting about PSU fans being yankees, pedophiles, and chanting sick stuff about paterno in the concourse constantly.

I always say other teams are cool with your school until you are playing them.

It's often not a great look.
