There is a lot of talk on HR about the Hawks getting a new facility. I was wondering if there is any talk of getting a new facility at PSU and also, what the current facility looks like. Is there a video tour or something like that of the PSU wrestling facility?

Lehigh has a nice facility. WOW to that and congrats to them!

Thx! Is there any talk of building a stand alone facility like some other places are doing?

iirc... there was mention of a rec hall expansion in the latest facility 5 year plan

edit: I should have said 20 yr plan, in other words nothing happening to rec hall anytime soon.

No (to lookleft goright's question), the current facility is amazing, and includes this...

Worst part is the security rules at Rec Hall, now run by Student Affairs, and not part of Athletics. Wrestling facilities outside the "secure" area, though locker rooms, offices, and other aspects are inside Rec Hall. Short rant off...

as long as ESPiN is willing to put many of our guys on national TV on a Saturday night in March.......we dont need to rush like some and can allow our folks "to have a plan"

As you can see, PSU has state of the art facilities and has no real need for standalone unless you want the offices right next to the workout room....instead of 200 feet away.

For some schools it could make complete sense. Cornell has the only freestanding state of the art facility and overflows in a dual meet with 1000 fans. It houses the offices and is the practice facility for Cornell and the FLWC which like the NLWC, hosts surrounding area youth 2-3 times per week. Ithaca is a small community and the surrounding area even less populous. When it’s even half full it is loud in there. By creating intimacy with the fans the atmosphere is perfect. Koll is talking about a modest expansion as well.

That kind of thing would make sense where crowds are likely to be smaller.....and there is a donor with keen interest.

I really don’t see the value in a standalone facility for PSU, at least not today.

I went back and looked at the 20 year plan and there's no specific description nor timing of a rec hall renovation other than saying it's on the list for renovation.

However, to me there's is a huge clue in the plan as to the future of rec hall. The square footage of rec hall will see a huge decrease in square footage, from 215,000 to 101,000 (that can't be done without impacting seating space) That tells me that rec hall will be completely renovated in the future and become a stand alone wrestling practice only facility and that all matches will be moved to BJC (also renovated in the future)

link to plan, look at page 13 of the pdf

Just guessing...in August, Student Affairs took over management of Rec Hall, and a good bit of the space is not considered an "Athletic Facility". It's in name only, as I don't see anything other than face-lift, fan-friendly changes. Volleyball (M & W), and gymnastics (M & W) have matches/meets in Rec Hall too, so it's not just about wrestling. Highly, highly doubt wrestling is moving to the BJC full-time.

Tan Tom would like to know if the PSU Athletic department will be soliciting feedback on the expansion plan ;)

Yeah, has to be something weird like that. No way Rec Hall is being reduced to half it's size. Plus, 250,000 square feel currently is WAY more than just the gym.

That was kind of the point of my question. Some programs claim they need to have a stand alone state of the art facility to compete and I was wondering if PSU has a stand alone facility. It appears to be state of the art and as long as they have access to it when they want or need it, I guess it does not need to be stand alone. State of the art seems to be the biggest criteria and I may add having top notch people in place helps.

Thx for all the answers and info.

Upon further review..... on page 29 of the master plan the wrestling team (along with Gymnastics, Volleyball, and Fencing) practice facilities will move to a new "Olympic Sport Facility" adjacent to BJC and there is a footnote that says meets will occur in RH and BJC.
