PSU implicated in pay to play (sort of)

So which was it? He paid players from 2010-2014, or he paid Maybin in 2009?

That's quite a mishmash of schools. In the past boosters have gotten into trouble but apparently this guy wants to pass himself off as some sort of hired gun who goes around paying players. That's a risky business model. If it's true, I wonder where the funding came from and how much he personally profited. Or maybe he did it all out of the goodness of his heart.

Oh look, Wetzel’s using Paterno’s name for clickbait.

A few initial thoughts/questions:

1. I hope it isn't true. (Duh.)

2. Only $10k? That obviously doesn't justify it, but I'm surprised it's so little.

3. Pay the kid to stay in school? Typically, a kid gets paid to commit to a school or to sign with an agent (leave the school). Paying a kid to stay in school seems odd.

4. As always, who knew? I understand that it is said to involve a former assistant coach. If true, did anyone else on the staff, including Joe, know about it? This wouldn't be the first time that a Penn State player broke the rules (e.g., Curtis Enis). However, this is the first time I remember a Penn State coach being implicated in a player's bad act.

Think about who is position coach was at the time....not hard to believe at all. LJ isn't some magical recruiter people and paying a kid like him to stay in school helps who at the time...LJ, that's who. Yet when LJ left here what did he advise a certain DE to do....oh that's right...leave. Funny how that worked out. Agents know which programs to circle to and they know which "ace recruiters" on the staff they need to talk to. I used to believe the fairy tale too at one point, but college football and b-ball are corrupt. They isolate the HC's from this and just think they have really good recruiters on their staff. Wink, wink. Even the HC's know , but they don't know. Their egos just tell them they are great recruiters.

Sooo what are the NCAA implications here? I can't imagine it being too good.
No member is on the current staff, no admin member is left at the University. The assistant if named could get a slap on the wrist possibly, but paying a kid to stay in school would be something the NCAA would jump on....and then ignore the pay for play that has been going on for years.

I always thought we were above it all...the bribery, the cheating, the corruption. I have come to believe no school is above it all. NCAA football and basketball are enormous money makers. If you want to compete, you cheat. Some cheat more than others but no one can cast the first stone.
Everyone wants to believe this, but the reality is that some schools are just better at it and have deeper pockets. Shoe companies, agents, AAU, HS head coaches....there are a ton of people out there with their hands out or willing to run the money for these players. I mean how many 17 year old kids do you need to see on twitter or online with stacks of cash to think......hmmm something isn't right there. Kids get loaner cars. How lucky is Bama that all of their top recruits are good enough and well off enough to get 40k cars or Jeeps. It's literally the worst kept secret around, but people still pretend it doesn't happen.

Judas Johnson Sr up to his old tricks. No way Joe knew about this and I highly doubt anyone else did either

Are you kidding? Did you see the names on that list? You think the NCAA is going to drop the hammer on Notre Dame, Michigan, Alabama, and whoever else is named next? (I’m sure there will be more). Besides, North Carolina is named AGAIN and we all know they skate on everything.

Show cause for Larry Johnson?

Well, LJ Sr. is pretty clearly named. Will he respond? Will he resign? Be fired? Basically what this agent is claiming is he is making a small down payment to secure the future rights to be someone’s agent. $10k? And why does he need a coach’s OK to do this? For a family in need of $, how would $10k substitute for a 6 figure signing bonus? Name names, show proof, or go away.

Glad to see you show up today. I must again give you credit for the near-expert level trolling you've done since your "birth" in 2015.

Born on September 6, 2015. I wonder what happened that day? Why, it was the day after the Temple disaster!

I don't mind - I think it's actually kind of funny. Funny that the moderators haven't noticed him for 3 1/2+ years!

OSU will probably give him a raise and promotion

As mentioned, doesn't pass a sniff test. $10,000 versus first round money. He paid the $10,000 and then went pro anyway and gave it back as if the promise of the money wasn't good enough the transaction had to occur to be believable and then it was paid back which makes no sense.

So the story is LJ sr. askes his son's agent to pay Maybin $10,000 to stay versus accepting a multi-million dollar contract. Maybin accepts the money but a few weeks later decides he is staying in the draft and gives it back. Maybin's rookie deal had a $2,000,000 signing bonus and $1,500,000 dollar first year pay. Year two was $7,000,000. So that is TEN MILLION DOLLARS essentially guaranteed after what everybody knew was a 'career' crazy year for Maybin. But LJ somehow thinks that ten grand was going to keep in at PSU. Don't buy it at all.
