I speak jive let me translate,

I just received word from my daughter who is a Sr at Penn State that all face to face classes are cancelled. I assume this will be announced university wide shortly.
You and June Cleaver

I wish they'd just announce it and get it over with. I mean there's probably next to no chance that there won't be any cases of the virus on campus so we might as well get on with it

I have two kids at UP . From what I can gather, seems like at some point they will have a one to two week stretch with no F2F classes. But no official word from the Barron just yet.

Just another example of absolute stupidity. These are college age people. We are actually probably harming them in the long run. They’ll get sick. They’ll survive. They’ll be more resistant the next time. I’m 62 and have no fears. I never smoked I exercise daily. If I get it I’ll survive. I laugh at the people who proclaim evolution and then fight what allowed us to survive

I have heard that the decision will be made tomorrow.... since I am a professor... I have no idea how I am going to complete my classes effectively. My courses are based on my lectures. The required texts are more supplemental, etc. There are so many aspects that will effected. If there are no face to face classes... what about the dorms? Do they stay open? If not, will the university refund some of the housing fees charged. I can’t even comprehend all the side issues that are going to emerge!

My kids both want to soldier on with their engineering classes and labs. They both feel it is not the kind of material that will translate well onto video. Also, most professors are not comfortable with teaching via this type of learning experience. I would guess that there would be minimal refunds back to students. Hope whatever decision is made, that it works out for the best.

In this age you can hold a lecture online pretty easily. I would hope the school has that in place for you or gives you some guidance there. Of course there will be some challenges and it won’t be a perfect situation for all but the technology exists. Hopefully it would only be for a month or so, but you never know. Good luck to those bring impacted like this.

West Chester U has moved all classes to online work for the rest of the semester and students are not permitted on campus til further notice. They will be told when to come and get their stuff.

If they're even leaning towards to cancelling classes, now is the time to do it while students are on Spring Break. I work for the PSU Libraries' and admin has some rough ideas on contingency plans, however nothing can really be done until the University makes a decision. Right now the Tech folks are cobbling together laptops from parts to assist with working remotely and we are training more staff on scanning in anticipation of more e-reserves for classes.

For sure. Labs are really important. I don't know how you do upper class work in particular without physically being on campus. Maybe some majors chem e or mechanical -- labs are the heart of it.

If I was the only one doing that (videoing the lectures) you might be correct... however, I teach 4 different courses twice a week. I am one of many that has the problem. In the past I have committed a few of my lectures to video but we don’t have the capacity and equipment necessary to handle my courses as well as the dozens of other courses that would need to be videoed, etc. in any case, this will be a total mess.

What’s your discipline or what college are you in?

I just asked my daughter . She said they can show you a video of how to . Then give you a data set to analyze . Not the same but .....

Nuclear and mechanical engineering have both been taught online for years.

I got an MS in Engineering from Purdue without ever being within 100 miles of W Lafayette .... 25 year ago .... this isn't rocket science
and ..... what a great time to be a college student

Absolute stupidity thanks to lawyers. If these institutions didn’t have to cover their asses from lawsuits continually we wouldn’t be in this situation. Don’t blame the schools, blame the lawyers.

That sucks, sorry to hear. You would think a University would be able to stream a lecture in 2020. Well...best of luck.
