PSU - Wisconsin 2020 Dual Thread

They don’t wrestle on paper.
Shit happens at NCAAs.

——
P.S. -
I’m old enough to remember when 6 seed @141 Chris Dardanes AND 2 seed @149 Nick Dardanes BOTH got bounced and neither made AA.

Penn State won the team title 109.5 to 104.

Jammenz is old enough to remember that as well. He still has the t-shirt.

Maybe you don’t remember that, because the Hawks only finished 4th.

That was the year that Nick would have beaten Logan Steiber in a dual except for a hometown scoreboard stalling point error which the refs and all the Gopher coaches somehow missed while Steiber was taking a 30 second lunger injury timeout.

If that happened at National Duals, only you would care.

Yeah I think Barnett should have been hit for sure, probably a couple times.

I do think RBY should have been hit for “regular stalling” when he was just hanging on the leg even though he “wasn’t locked.”

But didn’t see much else I disagreed with.
I disagree on the RBY. He wasn''t locked on the leg and Gross made no attempt to even stand as he was looking to get the count. Too many times the bottom man's only goal is to draw a count as opposed to be offensive...if it's stalling call it on the bottom.

Ref sure did take his time calling stalling on Gross in the 3rd. Gross running away for virtually entire period... no call until something like 20 seconds leftt.

Pardon a dumb question from a casual fan of the sport. When Gross got near fall points, RBY was laying on top of him and his shoulders were no where near the mat. I get that Gross was in total control but, to me, it didn't look like RBY was in any danger of being pinned with Gross's body being where it was. Whats the determination there?

Here is the language from the rule book. Because his shoulders were on top of Gross you could make an argument that there should not have been back points. It was very close.

Section 5. Near Fall Art. 1. Near Fall Criteria. A near fall is a position in which the offensive wrestler has the opponent in a controlled pinning situation in which any one of the following three criteria are met: a. The defensive wrestler is held in a high bridge or on both elbows; b. Any part of one shoulder or scapula, or the head is touching the mat and the other shoulder or scapula is held at an angle of 45 degrees or less to the mat; or c. Any part of both shoulders or both scapulae are held within four inches of the mat. In any pinning situation, a near fall may occur if any part of either wrestler remains in bounds.

I’ll never forget the time when Laura Charles said it was nice to meet ME! ;)

He did make an attempt to stand, that’s how they got in that position in the first place. Gross was moving, but RBY had Gross’s ankle hooked with his leg which made it pretty much impossible for Gross to get out considering RBY was just sitting still in the same exact position.

And I’m not trying to be a hater. RBY did out wrestle him, I just think he should have been hit for stalling there. And I’ve said he should not have been hit for stalling in the similar situation against DeSanto last week.

There's 2 "criteria" that need to be met for the "exposure count" to begin: 1) the defensive wrestler's back must be 45 degrees, or less, relative to the mat, AND 2) at least 1 of the shoulder blades must be within 6 inches of the mat surface.

IMHO, the first criteria was met; however, the 2nd Criteria was the one causing the Ref to start and stop his count a couple times (he started and stopped like 3 times - on the 1st occasion, I think he made 2 swipes [the others never went past 1] thus he awarded 2 "Near-Fall Exposure Points.).

The reason he was starting and stopping was because RBY was on top of Gross's chest with his shoulders at a 45 degree angle to Gross' shoulders - not uncommon in a Spladle which is why it is difficult to pin with this move... the defensive wrestler's head or shoulders get caught on offensive wrestler's chest/side keeping the blades off the mat. Anyway, RBY's "inside shoulder blade" was close to the mat initially but got further and further away as RBY wiggled himself fully onto Gross' chest - the outside shoulder never met the 2nd criteria (i.e., within 6 inches of mat) as it was up on Gross' chest/shoulder... the reason the Ref stopped & started near-fall swipes so many times. However, only 1 blade needs to be within 6 inches to meet 2nd Criteria, so it was just a question of how long inside blade was within 6 inches (has to be a full "two one-thousand count") - it was very close because as you say, most of RBY's back was laying on Gross....

4 inches, used to be 6.

Out of curiosity, what was your stalling take during the last 1:30 of the match?

Watching Cenzo completely abuse Wick reaffirms my belief that Cenzo>Marinelli. You can discount transitive property all you want, but Marinelli would never beat Wick like that.

More of my useless road trip musings from inside the Field House:

1. My first trip to the Field House, and it’s a great old (emphasis on old) venue for wrestling, but then I had good lower section seats.... second level looked like some possible “obstructed view seating” and third level was mostly hidden behind their many Volleyball banners (well not everyone can be good at wrestling! :p)

2. Seats were as hard as Rec Hall... but much wider... a good thing for those of us with a more “full figured” seating surface to accommodate.

3. Parking - there is more parking at your local bank branch than at the Field House (which btw, is attached to Camp Randal Stadium!)... and that limited parking was “assigned”... and seeing as how my name was somehow not on the the young man’s list... I was banished to find “street parking” in an adjacent neighborhood... ( good thing I was early... like 2 hours early... Ok, ok... I’m still learning about time zones and that not everyone operates on Eastern time.)

4. They had a nice turnout (no announced attendance... but locals estimated 3,500-4,000), and it was an OK crowd, but nothing like the frenzied fans of Nebraska,.. which frankly surprised me given Chris Bono’s promotion capabilities and the wild crowds he got for the Jackrabbits! o_O In speaking of this with locals, they mentioned just how badly Barry had destroyed the program and the fan base... and that it was a long slog back. :(

5. I saw several posts about the stalling cries from the fans... believe it or not, it was actually not as bad as it was in Nebraska... here it was only three or four loud human beings (not including coach Bono) who were streaming “stalling”... and lucky for me, one was beside me and another two rows behind me. The reason it came though so loudly was (see #4) it was so dang quiet in the arena that it carried.

6. By 165 I was at my limit when loud-mouth neighbor streams...”what’s he doing on top!” I turned to Mr Clipboard (he was keeping his own score) and ask him “are you serious? Unlike your boys, Cenzo’s actually working for a turn”... and Cenzo delivered... probably saving me from getting bopped over the head with said clipboard..

7. Opposite side of me from Mr. Clipboard was a father & his 10 year old son. They drove all the way from somewhere west of Chicago. They knew nothing about college wrestling (including whether it was free or folk style rules) but his son (a young wrestler) said that he “wanted to see Penn State wrestle!” They left very happy, that young boys face just beaming... I did have to warn them that not all college wrestling is as dynamic as Penn Sate, but that is the way the sport is moving :D

8. Lastly, if you want to understand the heart of this team... when Shak was wrestling, all the team was standing and into the match as if the entire match depended on it... they all knew how important a confidence builder for Sugar would be... lead cheerleader: Nick Lee along with Cenzo. It was heart warming to see and I snapped a foto... but unfortunately I’ve long given up trying to post them here. :)

So now a day of rest and travel to Minneapolis ... for Sunday’s match. I am hoping to get there early to visit some thrift & vintage stores to see if I can get me one of those Gopher National Champs Tees from a few years back... :p
You want to email me the pics, and I can post for you?

Question. At the end of Brooks match, there seemed to be a minor incident when the ref went to raise Brooks hand. It looked to me like the ref walked Brooks right into Sebastian when he raised his hand and Sebastian was a little perturbed. Maybe that's not what really happened, I didn't rewatch it. Anyone else see anything there?

Hawks have waited for this upcoming March for a decade now.

Tom & Terry are going to be sooooo wound up, and likewise, several of their kids are going to be wound sooo tight ...

Nerves are a funny thing.
Shit happens.

Vodka is wound too tight now, and it's only early February.

Well, Cenzo just beat Marinelli. Also you are correct that Marinelli's wins over Wick are by 1 or 2 points. But this is a dangerous game because DT frequently killed guys that Dake only beat by a couple points. I think you just let them wrestle and if Cenzo wins that upperbody position 2 more times he closes out his career as a three-timer.

Gross wasn’t stalling until there was about 30 seconds left. He probably should have been hit about 10 seconds sooner than he was, but you won’t find many refs to call someone for stalling twice in the last 30 seconds of a match

I do think some refs also would have called a stalemate at around 1:10 remaining.

Aaron told the Referee that Sebastian was covered with baby oil

Wrong. You’re mixing up the criteria. Nova Lion posted the correct criteria above. Criteria c is simply that any part of both shoulder or scapulae must be held within 4 inches of the mat.

The key word there is scapulae, which a lot of people don’t realize is part of the pinning area. It was definitely NF.
