And for our halftime entertainment (yah not so entertaining, I'll try to make up for it at the end), I’m going back to the Big 10 today and visiting West Lafayette. Fun fact: Purdue had the most points of any team without an AA in last season’s tournament.
125 – Schroder (So) <GR Catholic Central, MI>
Devin Schroder went 19-6 overall and 2-1 in duals last year. He had some notable wins, including against qualifiers Ryan Millhoff (ASU) and Michael McGee (ODU). He’s taking over for Luke Welch who went 32-11 overall and made it to the round of 12 last year from the 14 seed. (Welch was a 4-year starter who had never qualified for the NCAA tournament before last season. It was a nice finish for his career.)
133 – Thornton (Sr) <La Crosse Central, WI>
Ben Thornton returns for his final season for the Boilermakers. He qualified for the tournament for the first time last year, going 1-2 (27-13 season record).
141 – Limmex (Jr) <GR Catholic Central, MI>
Nate Limmex went 26-16 last season and qualified for the tournament, going 1-2. He had two wins against Chad Red last season.
149 – Filius (Fr) <Haver, MT> or Coleman (Fr) <Mt. Carmel, IL> or Nash (Jr) <Hanover Park, NJ>
Parker Filius went 16-7 during his redshirt season (no wins against NCAA qualifiers). Kendell Coleman is an incoming freshman who was a 2-time state finalist, a runner-up at Ironman and 3rd at FloNationals. Austin Nash (Jr) went 7-21 as the starter last season.
157 – Parriott (So) <New Prague, MN>
Griffin Parriott went 16-13 last season and didn’t qualify for the tournament. He did have a few wins against NCAA qualifiers.
165 – ?
There looks like a wide open battle for 165 with returners Cole Wysocki (Jr), Laine Frazee (Fr) and Tanner Webster (Fr). Incoming freshman Emil Soehnlen could also be in the mix. Whoever is the starter will be taking over for Jacob Morrissey who in his last season with Purdue went 21-20 and qualified for the tournament going 0-2 (Morrissey also qualified @174 in 2017, going 0-2).
174 – Lydy (Jr) <Ben Davis, IN>
Dylan Lydy went 35-14 on the season and made it the round of 12 at the tournament from the 15 seed. He had a win against Myles Amine at the Michigan dual.
184 – Lyon (So) <Western Dubuque, IA>
Max Lyon went 19-16 last season and didn’t qualify for the tournament. He didn’t have any wins against last year’s NCAA qualifiers.
197 – Brunner (Jr) <Dundee-Crown, IL>
Christian Brunner went 24-11 last season and 1-2 in the tournament (he also qualified in 2017, going 1-2). Some noteworthy wins include defeating Kyle Conel 10-1 and Jacob Warner 10-6.
Heavy – Streck (So) <Merrillville, IN>
Shawn Streck went 30-15 last season and 2-2 in the tournament.
Purdue returns 5 of their 7 qualifiers from last year. Schroeder and Parriott look like they can be 2 new qualifiers this season. This team's floor will probably be right around their 28th place/12 point performance from last season with a decent chance to do better.
