I'm admittedly an old-timer here, but as I watch the Baylor-Texas game, I think back to all those old Wishbone teams, like UT, OU, Alabama. Those starting QBs routinely made it all the way through the season without missing games.
Yet, QBs who run this read-option offense drop like flies. The wishbone QBs would get tackled or at least hit on every snap, but the R-O guys don't, and they run the ball probably fewer times than the wishbone ones did.
Why do you think QBs go down to injury more often now than those days when they were hit all the time?
Is it as simple as defensive players are bigger and stronger now? But aren't the QBs also bigger and stronger than the ones from the 70s and 80s?
Maybe the answer is so obvious it eludes me, but it seems as if so many teams are playing with backup QBs nowadays.
