Quinn Ewers in the portal

There system in the Ryan Day era seems to use a QB to 'play catch' with their stable of top receivers, which works 90% of the time. Top defenses, like Nebraska, Penn State, and Michigan, give them trouble, and the game is decided by either the opposition having a far inferior and incapable offense (more so with Nebraska) or bouncing balls or calls going their way (Penn State). Pretty much the entire OSU team got surprised, didn't respond, and folded. A truly star quarterback would be a bonus, and maybe get them over the top, but I think many of such players would fall asleep or get into bad habits simply playing catch during 90% of their games.

That same system obliterated Clemson's defense last year, and put 56 on a top-10 Michigan team in 2019. I don't think that's Day's system. I think that's a function of OSU having O-line problems this year.

Two snaps all year. $700,000 per snap. I'll take that gig every day of the week. What an entitled punk!

I really doubt Allar winds up at OSU. OSU just got a 2022 commitment from the #4 QB in the class. Unlikely they would take another QB. Besides, it is tough to start at QB at OSU as Ewers found out. The Buckeyes need D, not more QB's.
An understatement. They SUCK !

I think Day is n a touchy situation as it's been well publicized that he's going to make some bigtime changes to his defensive staff but how will that affect that loaded 2022 class - many of those kids are being recruited by the coaches that might be let go.

Will McCord stay?
Good question. Stout is only a freshman, just like McCord. I'm thinking O$U might lose another QB to the portal. Miller is another QB for them and he's only a freshman too.

Miller already entered the portal. With Ewers gone, this puts McCord in the exact situation he expected to be in when he arrived. Back up Stroud next year, and be the man in 2023. Ewers coming a year early really screwed up the QB room, and by all accounts Day wasn't too happy about it. And Miller was a redshirt freshman like Stroud. He was a year ahead of McCord and Ewers.

Stroud was a redshirt freshman this season, a member of oh-high-ya's 2020 class. So if he puts up another season like this one he more than likely enters the NFL draft after next season.

So any QB on oh-high-ya's roster that sticks out next season could complete to start for oh-high-ya in the 2023 season.

Miller is also a redshirt freshman, who would be in his 4th year in 2023 when the QB job would be open at oh-high-ya.

McCord is a true freshman this season, and unlike Stroud and Miller would only be in his 3rd year in 2023 when he could end up starting for oh-high-ya.... Sure there will be competition by younger QB's from the 2022 and 2023 classes, but if McCord wants to start at a top 10 program he will face that same competition at every top program he might consider transferring to. I look for McCord to stick at oh-high-ya and end up the starter in 2023.

The big question is, does McCord want to wait until '23 to start? And even then, they'll be the Brown kid and whomever they recruit for '23 competing.

It's not guaranteed he is ever the primary starter at OSU.

That last sentence is funny coming from a PSU fan.

One thing about Day/tOSU/system, he seems to go away from a successful running game at potentially key moments. In the Michigan game while down 7-0, tOSU had 2nd and goal at the 3 yd line after consecutive running plays of 7, 28, 9, 7, and then 2 on first down. Having success and wearing the defense down, why not ram the ball in even if it takes 3 more plays? Day decides to pass and FG result.

He used a similar strategy against Clemson in ‘19 multiple times and kept settling for FGs. We know how that game turned out. I think Day cost tOSU a MNC opportunity that year.

Putrid? That seems a little extreme.
What happened was he hired legendary Ohio State defensive back coach, Kerry Combs to be defensive coordinator and he wasn't up to it. Will have to rebuild. His first defensive coordinator that he hired, Jeff hafley was very successful and was nominated as a defensive assistant of the year the one year he coached before he went to Boston college.

Miller's already in the Portal. Stroud is a RS freshman whereas McCord is a true freshman so Stroud will probably leave after next year. They just got a commitment from 2022 high 4-star Devin Brown who was committed to USC. In reality, the Portal is a 2nd wave of recruiting. Whereas many schools will lose top notch players to the Portal, those same schools will also pick some good ones up. Welcome to CF 2021

One thing to keep in mind about the NIL numbers you hear about they are all coming from the kid's side of things. It's just like the numbers that initially come out during free agency, all from the agent's side of things, they tend to be quite inflated.

Sounds like Day will be making some defensive coaching changes. Does he retain Combs and does Larry Johnson retire like some rumors suggest ?

Apparently the story is this.

Ewers signed a million dollar NIL deal with a kombucha company. However, the company has a provision stating that Ewers MUST start X number of games by the 2022 season. When it became clear that Stroud was the man and no way Ewers was going to pass him -- and wasn't even guaranteed he'd pass up Kyle McCord -- Ewers bolted. Apparently Ewers even asked for that guarantee and was told no.

Multiple sources claiming this.

Crazy.
I also keep seeing comments that performance and participation clauses aren't allowed in NIL deals per NCAA rules. I have no idea how true that is, but the stories about Ewers' deal are all over the place. No matter what, he looks bad transferring so quickly. Of course if he did manage to pocket 1.5M in 4 months then he probably doesn't care about public perception.

Don't know if he will keep Combs as DB coach. Combs is a great human being who is just not a great defensive coordinator. In speaking about his demotion he said, just like he told players who had been set back, he was doing the best for OSU in a tough situation. If he didn't do his best, he said he would be lying to the players.

Haven't heard anything about Larry Johnson leaving. He has two 5 star freshman defensive ends coming back. Had done great with tackles. One commentator said that tackle Taron Vincent was knocked back 6 yards into an OSU linebacker by a Michigan lineman.

Coaching changes always occur after 12/15 signing day.

He skipped senior year of HS, made $1 million in NIL bucks, and transferred when he wasn't given the job. This is the new college football.
This is why in few years all these NIL will look a lot different. It all new right now and company are over paying. How much return did that company get on that deal. Eventually these companies are going to need to justify the expenditures.
